Trump says he disagrees with Georgia's push to re-open economy

“It’s just too soon. I think it’s too soon,” Trump said. “They can wait a little bit longer, just a little bit - not much. Because safety has to predominate. We have to have that.”

Georgia has had more than 20,000 cases of COVID-19 and has seen more than 800 deaths.

It's an odd day indeed when Donald becomes the voice of reason...

Thoughts?

As I've discovered it's hard not to make a fool of one's self when projecting the future of Covid-19 morbidity and mortality.

1. One theory is that it is so infectious that it is already too widespread to be stopped and evidently a lot less harmful as the number of people who have had it is large so proportionately the risk of harm is small.

2. The opposite theory is that it is not that infectious, has yet to peak, and is really very harmful.

It is easy to be convinced by either theory, only experience will tell.

A few weeks ago the lack of prison outbreaks and the peak reached by the disease in Sweden indicated theory 1 was correct. Now there have been prison outbreaks and the daily confirmed cases of Corona virus in Sweden is higher than it has ever been.

So it is beginning to look more like 2. is true.

In addition though the 'flatten the curve' strategy is a good one to follow because if you do get the disease, even if the curve is going down, you still want available ventilators and staff when you get it, so you still want to delay it as much as possible. And as the disease often causes permanent damage you would ideally not want to get it until a good cure arrives.

I think he's been perfectly clear: he has complete control over when states relax restrictions and it's up to the governors of the states to decide. As for timing, states should be liberated from the restrictions now and Kemp knows what he's doing and he's making a mistake by lifting them.

Trump is being smart. When deaths spike in Georgia he can throw Kemp under the bus. He’s carefully positioned himself to back the ‘open up now!’ people from his base but now he’s adding careful caveats so he can claim it wasn’t actually his fault when it all goes horribly wrong. When you get in bed with a serpent, you shouldn’t be surprised when it bites you.

Lifting the restrictions too soon can cause a second wave which could be more destructive than the first. In NZ we are down to 3 new cases today, and we might be going down to level 3 on Monday, but some restrictions will still be in place for 2 weeks and the number of new cases and where they originate will be closely monitored to ensure that there is not a resurgence of community transfer cases which could undo all the hard work that has been done here to knock the virus on its head in this country.

It’s Thursday afternoon here in Australia. By Friday evening, I won’t be surprised if Trump is tweeting “LIBERATE GEORGIA!l......
That should trigger a lot of libs.
