Standing in Freedom

Gal 5:1-3 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.

The yoke of slavery is the burden of all the rules and regulations associated with the keeping of the law, circumcision being one example. Those who get circumcised for the purpose of fulfilling the law obligate themselves to keep every single rule and regulation of which the law speaks. And by doing so they show that they reject the salvation Christ has provided.

Yet often times Christians get caught up in this same kind of legalism. What are indications you may be a foolish Galatian?

  • If you consider church attendance to be a requirment for salvation, you may be a foolish Galatian.
  • If you believe Christians have to observe the Sabbath day, or other days to be saved. (Rom 14:5; Col 2:16)
  • If you consider tithing to be a legal obligation. (See Christian Generosity)
  • If you reckon a Christian unsaved because they haven't been baptized into your denomination
  • Or more generally, if you believe that you have to get wet to get saved, you may be a foolish Galatian.
  • If you believe that children are automatically saved apart from faith in Christ just by being born of Christian parents.
  • If you believe the kingdom of God is a matter of eating or drinking (Rom 14:17) or the like.
  • If you refuse to fellowship with Christians simply because they are not of your denomination.
  • If you gullibly accept whatever your institutional church (or denomination) tells you just because they tell you so, or if you reject any criticism of such leadership simply because it is criticism, then you may be a foolish Galatian.

The freedom or liberty that Paul speaks of in his letters are liberty of conscience. He presents two sides to that coin.
1 Corinthians 6:12. All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
And a second time in the same letter:
1 Corinthians 10:23. All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
It is important for every new believer understand that their relationship with the Spirit of the Lord is essential to functioning within the body. More mature Christians have the obligation to lead them properly into this freedom. Here is the caution that must be heeded:
1 Corinthians 8:9. But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to them that are weak.(babes in Christ).

"If you consider church attendance to be a requirment for salvation, you may be a foolish Galatian."

If you are young in Christ and feel in your heart that you need to be in church every Sunday, follow that conviction. Know that you are not "earning your salvation", but you are being diligent to make your calling sure, finding your role for stewardship. You should never be quick to listen to a voice within you saying: "you don't have to go to church today, you had a late night, get some rest". Pray through.
One season early in my faith walk I was working overnights stocking shelves. I came home feeling horrible! I told my wife, go to church without me, I am going to lay down. I went to bed and began to pray for healing, and I heard a voice say, "feeling sick isn't an excuse to stay home, it is a reason you should go." I got up, threw on some clothes, and caught up to my wife. As soon as the music started and I lifted my hands in praise, that horrible feeling left my body! I felt renewed! I did not earn anything! It was grace all the way! But you have to hear and obey the right voice in your heart.
Jesus put it this way:

Luke 17:10. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

I am not teaching legalism, I am exhorting you to listen and obey the Lord from a pure and sincere heart open to Him.

Probably better to study the Bible at home than sit a church where the pastor does not preach the Gospel. Some church

I used to go to a Seminary library to read. I was not enrolled in their school. Occasionally I read some pages and was filled with elation in the library basement where no other people were reading. I did not need to base my hope on Genesis or Exodus any longer. Jesus is the truth.

Good of you to share this, as you are a part of the body of Christ.
