Coronavirus: Virginia pastor who defied social distancing dies

Despite authorities urging people to practice social distancing, Glenn held an in-person service on March 22.

“I firmly believe that God is larger than this dreaded virus,” Glenn told his congregation in a sermon that day, according to video of the service shared by WTVR. He vowed to keep preaching “unless I’m in jail or the hospital," the New York Times reported.

Why would you rate a post about someone dying 'funny'?
Enjoying watching someone being hoisted by their own petard taken to its logical conclusion, I can sympathize.

However as he infected others and caused other to infect even more due to this stupidity that takes the humor out of it for me.

It takes generations of living the ways of the Lord (self-denial / austerity) to build up an effective resistance against all pathogens, including poisons. This is in the Bible.....Wonder why this doesn't work among many Christians??

I am saying this because I actually come from a family who is completely immune to flu and colds. Ironically, they chose a simple life living at the edge of society than opportunities to be rich. They were handed opportunities to be rich right at the doorstep but refused it.

Most Christians think that providence is in the form of worldly riches or comes within a few years. It doesn't work that way and providence mostly NOT in the form of material wealth. God is an eternal. His time, not ours, and doesn't care for perishable goods.... If you want blessings and a good worldly life within a few years, worship the devil instead, go to his church, there's plenty around.

It does matter what we believe, at least for me.
I have never seen a society driven by fear as much as now. I myself is not a brave as a person but I know that's not a good thing or what God wants. I have taken my time and researched what this is, how dangerous it is and so on.

They label many who passes away as "COVID-19" even that the seasonal flu is more deadly.
I don't know about the Pastor in Virginia and what happened to him, but since you talk about here, CNN did use this to slam him and it "should be a lesson" - I have no words. Video in the link below.

While we could see this mistake ahead of time, consider the bigger picture:

12 Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,
and also madness and folly.
What more can the king’s successor do
than what has already been done?

13 I saw that wisdom is better than folly,
just as light is better than darkness.
14The wise have eyes in their heads,
while the fool walks in the darkness;
but I came to realize
that the same fate overtakes them both.

15 Then I said to myself,
“The fate of the fool will overtake me also.
What then do I gain by being wise?”
I said to myself,
“This too is meaningless.”
16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;
the days have already come when both have been forgotten.
Like the fool, the wise too must die!

That is the main problem with Bethel, Word of Faith churches etc that continue to preach that the signs and wonders we observed in the 4 Gospels and Acts are to be expected during this era.

People quote verses like Mark 16:17-18 without realizing that they were only meant for the Jews, as circumcision once was

What's the point of the OP? The articles note that he did not defy anything, and I couldn't see where anyone said the virus cares about beliefs.

Some people seem to think that their beliefs will protect them from the virus. As cases like this demonstrate, they are incorrect.

All the virus does is infect a host, replicates, then infects more hosts. All the virus needs for that to happen is people to continue to gather together.

Well I do believe that as Christians we are to respect the laws of the authorities but as for COVID19 I see no reason for us to fear it. So if the authorities say that we should refrain from large gatherings then I think we should respect that, but not out of fear of catching it. COVID19 is part of God’s plan and His will be done. Life here in this world is not our goal and we have no reason to fear death.

So if the authorities say that we should refrain from large gatherings then I think we should respect that, but not out of fear of catching it.

The problem is that people who catch it can then spread it. And spreading it kills more people.

Even if you're not concerned about those other people, others may be. Would you want to be responsible for killing someone's mother/father/son/daughter/etc?

That is why it's so important to take social distancing measures seriously.

COVID19 is part of God’s plan and His will be done. Life here in this world is not our goal and we have no reason to fear death.

The problem is that by spreading the virus, it increases the chances of killing other people.

So even if you're not personally concerned about your own well-being, people need to do the right thing from everyone else's well-being. We're all in this together.

No one will catch it unless it is God’s plan for them to catch it and no one can avoid it whom God has planned to catch it. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t take precautions or disregard social distancing, I'm saying as Christians we shouldn’t fear it or fear death.

Over 30,000 dead Americans. Your god’s plan sucks and I believe deserves to be called despicable because of it.

Death is only undesirable to those who oppose God. To those who serve Him death is merely a relocation from this miserable world to paradise. Don’t blame God for those who cause their own demise.

Irresponsible Christian religious cliches fail in situations like these. I would hope some Christians would learn to develop some compassion rather than resort to them.

You said:

So no one has any control over causing or not causing their own demise. It is all on your god on who does and does not die. His plan has cost over 30,000 American lives so far. It is a horrible plan.

Also, what you stated is what gets Christianity referred to as a death cult.

I was referring to those who will burn in the lake of fire. That’s the demise of those who don’t serve God.

What does that bit of 1st century Christian fanfiction have to do with the validity of what I said?

Christians that dismiss the value of human life, and the understandable fear that people feel in the face of death and human finitude, in favor of religious cliches do nothing to endear their religious ideology to those of us who are skeptical.

Belief that you lack agency in this regard seems to be part of the broader issue. If people don't believe they can actually influence the outcome, people aren't going to be willing to be part of the solution. Such thinking seems both irresponsible and dangerous in the current circumstance.

And again, you personally not fearing death isn't the issue. It's the fact that people can spread this infection to others that is the problem. Which is why everyone needs to do their part and engage in minimal person-to-person contact for the foreseeable future.
