Hello.
Due to "you know what" we have made
Some big and rapid changes.
One is streaming.
We are using a cell phone right now.
We have a video system, but we
Need to make stuff to talk to
Each other.
I understand the basics...needing to
Get sd or vga to usb converter/accumulator.
The same on the audio xlr to usb
Converter...plug into computer, and
Use one of several programs...one
Free, another $60.
But here is a question....to make it cheap
Could a tablet or cromebook be
Used rather than a pc....althogh we
Might be able to afford an inexpensive
$300 laptop....but would like to
Keep it down in price.thank you !

I do freelance camera work for a TV studio, where we have 5 figure encoders and pro gear. Its a cakewalk, but they shut down us freelance guys... Thus, what was a great deal for church pre you know what,,, but I no longer have access to that stuff, thus I'm doing stuff on the extreme cheap end of things. So cheap, that we determined, streaming was not possible, thus we use prerecorded material and premiers, that we load up a day prior, rather than live... that being said.

Streaming is a tricky thing... getting the signals in and out is the easy part, but if you are considering OBS studio or other PC based streaming apps, make sure the PC you run it on has really good video performance, or you will be fighting it at every turn. In other words, cheap doesn't work... unless you have a really good performing machine that you can repurpose. Ie, if you use a PC for video editing, and it doesn't die running adobe premiere pro, you should be ok. Bottom line though, hardware encoders will save you a ton of grief, but there too, cheap equates to frustration.

One of the last things I tried before giving up was live streaming through a tablet. Yes, it worked, at least in the middle of the night. The thing is, you loose the capability that glass gives you... so its a step up from a cell phone, but its no where near what video gear can do.

The thing is, you need to have a reliable and speedy internet connection, and reliable and speedy wifi to go the tablet route... and not just at 2AM. Pretty much Sunday morning, every church is out there trying to stream, and every congregant is trying to recieve, and unless your and there ISP/backbone can keep up with it you will have trouble. Even my buddies church who has TV studio gear was getting major drop outs on Easter, so much so, I figured I'll catch it on youtube later.

$300 isn't going to cut it, at all. Video editing is one of the more demanding tasks people do on computers, so you need something with some juice. Even a simple 2-channel USB audio interface will run you $100-150, unless you've got a digital board with a usb output that you can feed straight into the computer.

And you're better off pre-recording the service and uploading it so it starts when you want it to, rather than trying to stream live.

Personally, I think most churches are wasting time and effort trying to dive right into this at the last minute. If you've already got the skills and equipment to pull it off, great. If your current setup only needs some modest investments to get you over the hump, go for it. But if you've never done it before and don't really know how to do it, then your best bet is to have somebody preach/sing into a Zoom meeting on their ipad. This stuff is expensive and complicated in the best of times.
