Dr. Marc Siegel opens up about his father, 96, and his use of hydroxychloroquine

Dr. Marc Siegel, a Fox News medical contributor, told “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Tuesday that his 96-year-old father was recently weak and struggling to breathe but recovered after he was administered an anti-malaria drug and antibiotics.

Siegel was discussing hopeful signs that hydroxychloroquine has shown in recent studies when combined with antibiotics for coronavirus treatment.

Siegel said his father, who lives in Florida, recently complained about weakness, shortness of breath and feared that he was going to die.

Siegel said that his father’s cardiologist prescribed hydroxychloroquine and antibiotics and the combination proved effective.

...uhmmm...and? did I miss the part where they posted a link showing he was tested for the virus, found out he had it, administered this combination and he was miraculously cured the next day?

Likely the writer took some liberty and the doctor simply said he was breathing without distress in the morning. There is a fatigue that lasts with this virus.

The respiratory symptoms are what is being used to to diagnose this a lot of the time because we don't have a week for the tests to come back before we start treatment. And it does have a sort of distinctive cough. However, there are markers that are in blood work that if they are elevated, we can be pretty sure that someone is positive.

Hopefully, with the new rapid test, we won't be waiting a week anymore. And drug appears to work because like malaria, this coronavirus seems to mess with the heme portion of the red blood cell. If it can be stopped early, then the patient doesn't seem to decline as often.

If you are wanting the results of these studies...well, that will be in the future. But I do see it working in the hospital.

So is his dad doing better? I'm finding this unclear..

But wow 96? Having a doctor for a son is great for long life!

Before it turns into a full-blown case of pneumonia?

I believe facts and evidence, all that was offered in the OP was a "cool story, bro!" sort of proof.

Good grief ... I'm happy his father is doing well.
...I'm sorry, but did you see any proof his father was doing badly in the first place? Because what I see is someone on tv telling people a story that may or may not be true, about someone who may or may not have had the virus, and he may, or may not have been helped by something. :sorry:

Actually, there are people saying that this isn't really a pneumonia after all but a hypoxia related to the blood and not the lungs (the virus may attack the heme on the red blood cell making it unable to carry oxygen which is why the anti-malaria drug works). It will be interesting to see what they learn.

The breathing difficulty is evidence that they are on their way downhill...and this man was 96 so not much wiggle room. People are having to be intubated when they are totally "with it" and able to make all their own decisions...but their bodies are just not able to maintain Oxygen levels that will feed the body, even on very high levels of oxygen through a mask. It is very different from anything we are used to seeing.

Well, that is interesting. Wouldn't they be able to tell if it was pneumonia with a chest x-ray?
Chris Cuomo has the virus and they showed his x-rays on TV and they didn't really look like my x-rays when I had pneumonia.
Edit: I just found where I saw Cuomo, it's on youtube. He doesn't have pneumonia but there are small areas of ...gee, it's late and my old brain isn't remembering the word I want. You probably know anyway.

you are being suspicious/pessimistic and propagating this man could be a liar without cause ... you do not have any "proof" or "evidence" that he was in FACT lying ... do you have proof or evidence that he was in FACT lying? If so ... then produce it (since you require it). Otherwise ... it's just plain old gossip.

So what is causing your suspicion/pessimism?

Because it was on TV? Because it was reported on Fox News? Because you have inside information this man is in fact not trustworthy?

Anything one sees on TV may or may not be true .... anything (articles/reports) may or may not be true.

If it's TV .... then don't watch any of it ... because any of it "could be" not true.

There are no good reasons to believe (or propagate) the story is not true and am happy his dad is doing better and pray he has a full recovery.

Dad being old and sick with the CV would have been known by a lot of people and if the doctor made false claims regarding his father's recovery we would hear about it within days, probably hours.
God let us develop medicines.

Kind of unclear on how this works huh? let me explain: you make a claim: "I can fly to the top of a house and then glide down to the ground!" it's not up to me to prove you can't do that, it's up to you to show you can. The same is true of this story. It's his story so he's the one who has to prove it's true, it's not my job to show it isn't.

So what is causing your suspicion/pessimism?
...well, I could pull out a proverb from the Bible:
Proverbs 18: 17 said:
The first person to testify seems innocent, until the other comes and cross-examines him.
or I could pull up this one and apply it to these sorts of situations
Acts 17: 11 said:
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
we're often admonished in the Bible to find out the facts in situations rather then just to take things at face value.

Because it was on TV? Because it was reported on Fox News? Because you have inside information this man is in fact not trustworthy?

Anything one sees on TV may or may not be true .... anything (articles/reports) may or may not be true.
uhmmm...isn't that what I said? That's why I like to "see if these things be true" I like to have multiple sources to support something rather than just one that may (or may not) be accurate.

If it's TV .... then don't watch any of it ... because any of it "could be" not true.
Well...to be fair, I'm not the one who posted the OP so I'm not sure why I'm the one being admonished about watching tv.

There are no good reasons to believe (or propagate) the story is not true
And since there's no real reason to believe the story I'm not sure why pointing out it may or may not be accurate is a problem.

and am happy his dad is doing better and pray he has a full recovery.
On those two points we can both agree.

A lot of patients also do have pneumonia per chest xrays. Others have a pattern that I can't remember what it is called (I'm very tired) that is unique to Covid. That is probably part of the complicating factor is that a lot of people do get pneumonia. We are now adding activities like using and incentive spirometer and deep breathing & cough, ambulating, and lying in a prone position (on the stomach) to minimize the pneumonia complication.

I had to call a code that ended in intubating and putting a patient on a ventilator today. Someone told me that she didn't think he would get off the ventilator. This virus' path and action is so different from any other respiratory/oxygenation. It happens so fast on people who don't even look sick.

Dr. Marc Siegel Opens Up About His Father, 96 & His Use of Hydroxychloroquine When He Was Sick with COVID19

The Drug Kept The Virus from Killing Him!

My Nephew Spent Last 9 Days In The Hospital When COVID Hit Him Hard & This Drug Kept Him from Succumbing To Respiratory Failure

is he lying about his nephew as well?

Has his nephew refuted the story?

How about the cardiologist ... has he refuted the story?

Siegel said that his father’s cardiologist prescribed hydroxychloroquine and antibiotics and the combination proved effective.

If he's lying .... he's involving a lot of other people in the "lie".

I'm just saying .... ;o)

Of course not because,
we would have heard back within the hour.

Appears this drug has proven to be helpful with CV recovery in many cases.

Seems some are against it's use just because,
Trump supports it.

How does that go
bite off your nose to spite your face.

...and the links to support any of the above? Let's try it this way:
"I heard a guy almost got struck by lightning while pumping gas and survived!" Now if I stopped there? That's a "cool story bro!" post BUT if I add this:
and say: "If you start at 19 seconds in the video posted there's video of the strike, there's video of the guy falling over, and its broadcast on an actual news show with an employee of the store talking about the situation!". That's support. See the difference? Now every single thing you posted may well be true or some of it may be true and some of it could be just a coincidence, or it could all be true but the conclusion drawn from it could be wrong. I'm not saying he's lying, I'm saying: it's nice the grandpa and nephew are doing well, but none of it can be used to show the drug under consideration is "the light at the end of the tunnel"

We are also using incentive spirometers and deep breathing & cough techniques along with lying on your stomach for periods of time. The first two activities expand your lungs and get oxygen to the bases (or the bottoms) of the lungs. the second activity takes the pressure off your lungs and allows them to open up better than lying on your back or sitting up.

I found this:
Can breathing exercises help get you through coronavirus? A metro pulmonologist weighs in
“When you go to the hospital and you have pneumonia, or you have a surgery of some kind, an abdominal surgery, they give you a machine called the incentives barometer. It is something that actually opens your lungs up, they ask you to do it two to three times an hour. The purpose of that is to open your lungs up so you don’t get pneumonia, you don’t get an infection, and so you have to liken these deep breathing exercises at home to using the incentives barometer, without having the incentives barometer in front of you,” Patel said.

Estevez asked Patel if there is something that you can do at home if you ended up with a mild case of the virus.

He said taking several deep breaths about once an hour will help keep your lungs open and clear of fluid.
tulc(has a couple of those incentive spirometers lying around the house from past surgeries should find out if someone could use them)
