Hello everyone!

I'm looking for some guidance on my our situation.

I would not call myself a believer but I am trying to understand be supportive.

Over the past 3-4 months, my wife has become very much into God and feels as if God chose her to speak his message. She is saying God speaks to her directly (audibly) most days when she prays, and God has told her several times he has greatness in store for her.

There is a lot more, but my question is, is it common to audibly hear the voice of God? Do many people experience that?

I apologize if this is not the correct place for this, but if anyone can provide any insight I would appreciate it.

Yes! The Lord does speak to us. For some, He speaks to on a regular basis whist for others, not as often. It's important though to take whatever message you receive 1st and test, to see if it's inline with His word. Personally, I always think it's safer to spend more time in His word because He speaks through it daily.

Audible? This is most likely a delusion.

See, we all want to be something special to God, and sometime we make that happen where it it true or not.

Her case actually fits perfectly with what sometimes happens to new Christians. They are very grateful to God, and so eager to please him, that they go way overboard and imagine things. A common occurrence.

I would say, once Christians season a bit, this over zealousness will tend to level out to a better understanding of What God wants from us.

On a side note, she may have been listening to a preacher who is constantly going on, "God told me this, God told me that" something that is completely fake in my mind, and that "could" play a role in this.

Give it time?

It is not normal to hear a message saying that God has greatness in store for one.
God does call people, sometimes by a voice, to do a task but he does not promise a reward for doing that task.

May I suggest that you both go and talk to the minister of the church she belongs to.
If she does not attend a church every Sunday I would suggest arranging to meet with a minister for advice and also arrange to see a doctor.

Thank you for all your input!

Interesting take that I have not considered...She has always been a Christian but something certainly changed since January. She now spends a good part of the day listening to sermons on Youtube so I have no idea what she is hearing from them. But the thought of hearing God speak and having other visions and seeing things makes me question if something else is going on

Hello and welcome to CF.

This is something people in such a position do not like to hear, but the enemy (or something in our own minds) is what will appeal to a person’s idea that they can be great, important, speak for God, and so on.

God wants people to be saved, and telling a person they are great, special, going to speak for God is an almost perfect recipe for spiritual pride. That works in direct opposition to salvation. In fact it can lead to the most serious kind of spiritual delusion that a person might not be able to be delivered from (since they tend to think they don’t have a problem and know better than anyone who tries to help them).

Yes, God CAN speak audibly to a person. But it happens so rarely we ought never to expect it in our lives. God would not choose a person who was not already deeply, deeply humble, because He loves us too much to spiritually destroy us. It is almost certainly the enemy, or a voice from within one’s own person, who tempts in this way. Especially in the case of new believers.

I would suggest getting your wife to someone she might listen to for discernment too. Unfortunately, there are some denominations that are likely to latch on and feed her enthusiasm. And others who will be so dismissive that she might not accept anything they say, since it goes against her own experiences.

Those who have wisdom going back to the Desert Fathers would be most able to help and would most understand what she is experiencing. Particularly those with monastic experience, who spend hours every day seeking God and involved in spiritual warfare, will be most likely to have such wisdom.

God be with you both.

Thank you for all your input!

OK, I was under the impression she was new at this, but as you say, it could still apply.

The problem with a delicate situation such as this is, it is possible she was called, and I do realize that makes the whole thing that much harder to deal with.

That's another good reason to just take it as it comes, try to support her, while watching out for things that don't seem right, or don't seem to go with what she claims.

Also a lot of the youtube or TV preachers/speakers are fakes, out for the money, and I'd hate to see her get caught up in something like that, let alone teaching what some of them teach.

Lastly, and you have to decide on this yourself, you can jump right in and support here all the way.. IOW, be exited for her, assume all she is saying is true, and let her decide if it's working out or not .For all I know you are doing that already. Sometimes it's best people see for themselves if there is a problem or not. It's like when we come to certain understandings on our own, over being told them...they really take hold that way.

I know none of that helps much, but if you like, you may want to keep us abreast of the situation as it goes on, if need be. In the end, if she is teaching the right thing, doing so is, after all, not the worst thing a person can do.

Some of the more recent things that are red flags to me was a couple night ago we had a storm during the night. During the storm she was talking to God out loud, asking if the storm was because God was mad. She asked if it was because of 5G cell towers, God responded no. She asked if it was because of the digital ID movement, and god responded yes.

A few weeks ago there was an earthquake in Utah that damaged a Mormon church and she said it was because God does not approve of the Mormon lifestyle so he was sending a message.

Those types of things are what I'm really struggling to comprehend, so I'm curious if anyone has had a similar experiences. No one I've talked to has thus far.

And struggle you should. Those are very bad signs, and I don't mean maybe.

Still that does happen with others, and though that may make is somewhat normal, it still is not good at all. She is going way over the line.

You not being a Christian, even if I knew what to tell you do, and I do not, I'm afraid she'd just say you don't understand or some such thing, and it would go in one ear and out the other..

There was a suggestion earlier that you get her pastor of someone form her Church to talk to her. You would need to tell them just what you said there. If the pastor or co-christian sees no problem with that, then you got a bad problem. But I'm guessing they will see what you do, a real problem.

You could also Google "overzealous Christian", or such search tems that relate to this, because I assure you it's nothing new and there may be better answers out there.

Still it may be best to just see if it passes, and if not, then make a move, but start looking into any moves now.

With all the things said above, we can only help as much and you probably will not remember or be able to apply many of the things mentioned here. I strongly suggest that you talk to a pastor or minister in a church face-to-face as can be safely arranged or virtual. But what you need is a dialogue where the person can immediately reply to things you and your wife mention. The most important thing is that as mentioned already, nothing must go against Scripture and a person from church who has studied the Scriptures is the person who can facilitate that. Someone with training should apply “exegesis” when reading the Word which means the interpretation is derived from the text and in proper context. Many people in YouTube are not trained and apply “eigesis” which means their personal feelings, thoughts and biases drive the interpretation of the Word and make the verses fit what they think is right and not what it really says. For example, the thing about the Utah earthquake, the pastor can tell her that earthquakes happen all the time and destroy Christian churches and kill Christians and all other kinds of people whether of faith or not.

Basically - if God wants to make a person know something (however that happens exactly) - He is perfectly capable of doing so.

Treating God like a magic-8-ball toy is a big red flag. Not to mention it sounds like she is SOLICITING to hear answers, and that is most often a very, very bad idea.

God has talked with me, not audibly but telepathically. But He is God and He can communicate any way He wants. He talked with me most when I was in the mission field 30 years ago. He does draw back at times.

I also see red flags when she say He gets angry causes damage to churches or other institutions. Take everything in and don't pre-judge this situation, I will be praying for you.

I appreciate everyone's input on this!

Just wanted to follow up, I spoke to pastor at her church. He disagreed with her about the earthquake damage, but kind of played "both sides" about the rest. He has never heard God speak audibly, but said it was possible, and the other stuff I mentioned was possible as well, as unlikely as it may be.

He said one way to validate God is speaking to you is if the others in your circle are hearing the same message. If it is, then it is God. I would disagree with that assessment, since most of us surround ourselves with those who believe the same things.

Just wanted to chime in with an update.
