Luke 17:6 He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

Why do the the gospels of Matthew and Mark use the word mountain instead of tree like Luke does? (Matthew 17:20, Matthew 21:21 and Mark 11:23)

Also, and this is my main question, what does a tree and a mountain represent in the bible? Its hard for me to believe God would actually give us faith that could move mountains. I suspect that maybe the Lord was using symbolism here. But i'm really not sure.

Looking at the context of the verse, the apostles are requesting that Jesus increases their faith. Looking at Jesus’ response, I would not assume symbolism as much as I would think Jesus is stating that if he were to give them faith the size of a mustard seed they would be able to literally move mountains/trees through Him. I feel this response is consistent with Jesus’ view of the faith of the apostles as he calls it out many times in the New Testament. I think it can be very telling of how small our faith in Jesus is and how we must continue to aspire for a greater faith as the faith we have is not even the size of a mustard seed.

But this is just my two cents and what I get reading the passage. What do you think?

Faith comes from God, not us. So if he gives you faith to move a mountain, it means he is going to move it and lets you in on it.

Could be, thank you.

Best of luck in finding answers. If you find some good interpretations or other good explanations, would you be willing to come back and pass along? Would love to broaden my understanding of this as well.

Depending on where a traveler was going, mountains could make the journey near impossible or simply not worth it. The Christian encounters many 'mountainous' obstacles in his service to God. Very often, we will only persevere when we trust in God to remove the mountain from our path.

It's actually the mustard seed that is the symbolism here.

Faith is something you need to grow. It's literally like taking a seed, planting it, take care of it and believe in it.

An even better question is why does He say: THIS mountain, as they are standing on the Temple mount.
John 4:21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Zechariah 4:7. Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.

. . . and the "spirit" referred to here is Holy Spirit power for caring for the up & coming brother, so that he becomes fruitful and mature, so that we do not despair of His power in any of us, to mutually minister and to jointly intercede for all. This then is what the cry of "grace unto the Headstone" is. Gifts differing - distributed by Him when He ascended - IS grace abounding.

I teach ät an inner city public high school in Brooklyn. The demographics of my school are those that are continually ridiculed, even recently by Biden, as being "failed" school, and scoring significantly lower than suburban schools and other students. However, NYC has several high schools that rank among the very best in the US because they are "select" schools (you have to take a test to get in and the entrance exam basically takes the top 1% of students in the city). I understand this mountain in my ministry as the bias towards my students, it has grown over the last century and has very deep roots. When I look at schools other than mine with the same demographics (we are 84% male, students of color with a very high level of English language learners and people on the free lunch program) they score in the bottom 25% of NYC students. My students score in the top 7% and if we can get to the top 5% we'll be among the best high schools in the US.

I believe that we can do this by faith. Just like the Lord said, if you have faith like a grain of mustard you will tell this mountain to be taken up and cast into the sea. I believe that when my students take the Regents exam each June they are speaking to this mountain, and when we do get to the top 5% that mountain of bias will be taken up and cast into the sea.

They represent something impossible to move...making the point we can do the impossible with enough faith.

That scripture has always fascinated me. We have access to supernatural powers if only we could muster a tiny bit of faith.

Do you think that the mountain in John 4 represents Jesus? Instead of coming to a mountain or Jerusalem we come to Jesus? Im reminded of Jesus words that describe him as the temple.

"Moving Mountains" is often used metaphorically, so I was suggesting that the mountain that we move metaphorically with shouts of Grace, is religion and Temple places of worship. Jesus implemented worship "in Spirit and Truth", not buildings made with hands. I think when you are reminded that Jesus is described as the Temple, you are referring to Him saying in John 2:19: Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then in verse 21, He was speaking of the temple of His body. By whom we all become a Temple of God in our bodies by the promise of the Father, by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps the mountain represents our sin? What mountain becomes a plain?
