I believe Jesus seems like the most likely candidate in this case.
Moses asked God to see His glory. We know that Jesus is the glory of God (John 1:14). God says to Moses He will have compassion and mercy. This is exactly what Jesus does for us as a part of our reconciling with God the Father. We cannot seek mercy with the Father without going through Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only mediator between God and man. Also, God showed Moses his back parts. It is interesting that the vertebral column usually consists of 33 vertebrae. Exodus 33 is the chapter where God shows Moses his back. Humans have vertebrae, and Jesus is God incarnate (or the Word made flesh). Why is it important to show His back? Because in the time of the New Testament: Jesus would be wiped. His back would be striped with whip marks. For He was wounded for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities, and by His stripes (whip marks), we are healed.

Moses had seen God's glory, who is Jesus:

1 "God, ...
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" (Hebrews 1:1-3).

John wrote, "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him." (John 1:18).

"No man hath seen God at any time." (1 John 4:12).

I believe John was referring to a direct encounter physically with God the Father. This would not be a vision of the Father like Daniel had involving the Ancient of Days (the Father). This would be a real life encounter with God the Father (of which John here is referring to). This is also why I believe that Moses did not see God the Father physically. Some have tried to say that this was only not seeing His face, but I believe that would not be as precise or accurate.
