I've grown dubious of the hyped value of testing.

From what I understand, most people (that is, we working-class stiffs) can't get tested unless we are already showing symptoms. That means testing will not discover those who are walking around for up to two weeks as asymptomatic carriers.

Then if a person is tested after beginning to show symptoms, it takes from one to two weeks to get the results back (apparently there are testing procedures that provide results much more quickly, but that is apparently also not for working stiffs). Well, one to two weeks after showing symptoms, the sickness will have already revealed what it is by additional symptoms.

So I'm not sure what testing is going to do for us, except for those who have the money or position to get the accelerated testing procedure.

When did we ever have a reliable system for testing people for the flu - who had no symptoms of having the flu just to see how many with the virus would later exhibit symptoms? Has that ever even been "a thing"?

When dealing with a disease that has taken down the medical systems of two industrialized nations.

yes and when did we acquire the infrastructure for testing 350 million people to see what segment of the population has a given virus but shows no symptoms of it?

Italy is counting the bodies in the morgue. That tells them they are dealing with something more serious than the flu.

Indeed. And we have about 35000 bodies in the morgue each year due to the average flu season.

My question was about the unique idea of testing 350 million people even those who have no symptoms at all - to see what percentage have a given virus even though they show no symptoms of it.

To my knowledge we never had the infrastructure in place to do such a thing. Much less to then quarantine everyone in that 350 million that you find with the virus even though they show not symptoms.

Italy has 60 million people not sure if they have the infrastructure to test all 60 million

We have always had the system of the care of a individual who goes to the doctor and gets a path to take for their health, not a one size fits all mass flow of level of care. If this is the new normal, our choices in health care may soon be made for us.....

I think you meant to say, or perhaps it should be said in addition, that a person may be infectious for up to 37 days after a "mild" case seems to have resolved itself.

Also, btw, "mild' and "moderate" with covid-19 is relative to "severe" and "critical" for covid-19.

Compared to a cold or ordinary flu, a "moderate" case of covid-19 is equal to a severe case of the flu...people are sick as dogs with a "moderate" case of covid-19 and should be seeing a doctor. A "severe" case requires hospitalization, and a "critical" case means organs are shutting down.

I got curious about this after my reply to you and went online later and re-researched this. You are absolutely correct and my memory failed me on this subject.

I ran across a video news report in which it was pointed out that two US doctors have been testing hydroxychloroquine on patients and their results. Between the two doctors they have tested this drug on 1,049 patients and have had a 100% success rate after about a week of treatment. And this drug has been around for so long that it's available as generic prices so it's a cheap drug.

This is happening solely because Trump stood up and said the FDA will approve this drug for usage in treating the coronavirus. And the FDA has complied and said this drug is now approved for treating the coronavirus. And yet we still have Democrat governors refusing to allow doctors to use it to treat patients in their states. That includes Cuomo in New York and that is one of the most deadly areas in the nation right now in terms of coronavirus deaths.

This explains the phenomenon of coronavirus infections not existing in countries where malaria is prevalent.

I don't think Americans would agree to such efforts. Much like many don't want to take their meds and vaccine's.

Hydroxychloroquine works, we have those from the medical field who gave us the heads up and told us what was working from the reports they were seeing before the pandemic hit, and allowed us to prepare.

Just a shame this has gotten political...
