We are DEAD to the law, there isn't any superficial understanding of that reality in Christ.

Rom. 7:4
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

Gal. 2:19
For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
Once you understand that, understanding 1 John 3:9 make perfect sense.

If you are married to Christ by faith, then you are now living to serve Him. That is not works; rather, that is the New Life in Christ Jesus.

You are not saved by obeying all kinds of laws, or by fasting, or self flagellation, or more time spent in church, or other works. Why? The reason is that doing good works does not change your purpose for living, which is, a life of slavery to the Old Nature.

Salvation is a New Life of Love by a Gospel Faith in Christ Jesus – crucified to the Old Life controlled by your flesh, to serve your Lord Jesus.

Romans 6:21-22 (NIV)
21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

God wants YOU. God wants to give you LIFE by His Spirit. When God has YOU then your whole life is now HIS – a New Life of following Jesus into a life of Love.

If your faith is genuine, then your faith will and must lead to obedience unto good deeds – to die to the old man ruled by the flesh, and then to begin your New Life of faith as a follower of Christ Jesus. That is the Gospel:

Romans 1:1-5 (NIV)
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.

Romans 16:25-27 (NIV)
25 Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

You are God’s possession, who purchased you for Himself to be holy onto Him when you repented and then believed in Jesus as your rightful Lord.

Romans 12:1 (NIV) 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.

2 Timothy 2:19-21 (WEB)
19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription:
The Lord knows those who are his,”
and,
Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord turns away from wickedness.”

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (WEB) 11 As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children, 12 to the end that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory.

1 Thessalonians 5:5-6 (WEB) 5 You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness; 6 so then, let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober.

Luke 6:46 (WEB) 46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things which I say?

John 8:12 (WEB) 12 “I am the light of the world. [Isaiah 60:1] He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Your body is now a Holy Temple of God’s Spirit who leads you by faith. You are a noble vessel onto God’s service.

Your commitment of your whole life to God by faith is your privileged responsibility before God. By this faith God counts you as worthy for salvation. This is something you desire to do because you trust in Jesus – to follow Him to receive real Life, which is a life of Love, the life of God by His Spirit in you, as you walk by that Spirit.

Matthew 10:37-38 (WEB) 37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me. 38 He who doesn’t take his cross and follow after me isn’t worthy of me.

Luke 14:33-35 (WEB) 33 So therefore whoever of you who doesn’t renounce all that he has, he can’t be my disciple. 34 Salt is good, but if the salt becomes flat and tasteless, with what do you season it? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Renouncing all that you have means that you are denying yourself as part of this world system. Instead, you follow another – Lord Jesus. Therefore, as a believer, you are to re-dedicate your talents, gifts, wealth, and your very life to the New Life of following Jesus – to glorify God just as the Apostle Paul did.

For instance: Paul used all his years of education as a Pharisee to now serve Lord Jesus. You are re-dedicating all that you have and all that you are to the One who redeemed you at a very great cost. God redeemed you from the punishment of sin, and sins power over your life, so that you now receive the Life of God by His Spirit. All God’s promises are yours by this faith – The Faith of the Gospel.

Revelation 3:2-5 (WEB) 2 Wake up and keep the things that remain, which you were about to throw away, for I have found no works of yours perfected before my God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard. Keep it and repent. If therefore you won’t watch, I will come as a thief, and you won’t know what hour I will come upon you. 4 Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that didn’t defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes will be arrayed in white garments, and I will in no way blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Blessings

.

Yes, it is sin to covet, if you are under the Law but we have been set free from the Law.

.
You're kidding right? No wonder you claim not to commit sin. If you lust you covet, impure thoughts are coveting. So as far as you are concerned, no matter how much you lust or have impure thoughts you have not committed sin.

So if you murder, commit adultery, steal, lie, take the Lords name in vain you have not committed sin either because you have been set free from the law? Sounds antinomian to me

I/we are dead in Christ, the Law has been applied to us, your putting your understanding of the Spiritual life in Christ at a superficial physical level.

Do you not believe you are dead to the law, what would convince you?

Are you able to give me a verse where it speaks of this Moral Law?

The Spirit, who indwells believers (John 7:38-39), pours out the love of God in our hearts (Romans 5:1-5 – see above Passage). This love is the New Life in Christ Jesus by which we fulfill the whole Law of God

Romans 8:3-4 (WEB) 3 For what the law couldn’t do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh; 4 that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 13:8-10 (WEB) 10 Love doesn’t harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.

This is the Gospel Faith by which we are saved: to deny the flesh as master, and then to dedicate one’s life onto God to live a new life of love in the Spirit by following Lord Jesus. This is called, “walking in the Spirit.” By this faith we fulfill the Law.

Galatians 5:16-24 (WEB)
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s Kingdom. [Compare with: 1 Corinthians 6:7-11]
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.

Notice The Faith being described is founded in repentance that leads us to turn away from control of sinful desires of the flesh, to that of walking by the Spirit, which is a life of love by following Jesus. This is sanctification. As we continue in The Faith, the Spirit leads and guides us to keep our faith commitment to our Lord. This is the new life and is a new creation, which is salvation from sin and death.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 (WEB) 3 For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God, 6 that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified. 7 For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. 8 Therefore he who rejects this doesn’t reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you.

Notice, that the new life in Christ is a sanctified life. Therefore salvation is not just by having the Spirit of God living in you, but that, you are to live and walk by that Spirit living in you so that the Spirit may lead you into a sanctified and holy life onto God. Only those who repent, and then put their faith in Jesus will this new life be possible. Those who remain in The Faith will not resist and grieve the Spirit in them by disobeying their Lord and Savior.

Ephesians 5:1-10 (WEB)
5 Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.
3 But sexual immorality, and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints; 4 nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not appropriate, but rather giving of thanks.
5 Know this for sure, that no sexually immoral person, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and God.
6 Let no one deceive you with empty words. For because of these things, the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience. 7 Therefore don’t be partakers with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, 9 for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, 10 proving what is well pleasing to the Lord.

The fruit of the Spirit is founded in all goodness and love, but only as we walk as children of light (Eph 5:8 – see above), only as we walk in the love of the Spirit in us (Eph 5:9; Gal 5:22-24 – see above).

Will a Christian who resists and grieves the Holy Spirit in them be saved? How can such a faith lead to salvation when such a person is resisting and grieving God?

Romans 8:12-14 (WEB) 12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.

James 1:12-16 (WEB)
12 Blessed is a person who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him. 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. 15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers.

Galatians 6:7-10 (WEB) 7 Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do what is good toward all men, and especially toward those who are of the household of The Faith.

Romans 6:22 (WEB) 22 But now, being made free from sin and having become servants of God, you have your fruit of sanctification and the result of eternal life.

Revelation 3:4 (WEB) 4 Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that didn’t defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.

Only one question then, after a person becomes a Born Again Believer in Jesus Christ, can he sin?

Yes, but no true born again Christian will live in sin - because he has renounced the Old Master, and now lives for his rightful Master - Lord Jesus. - This is the New Life by which we receive the Spirit to guide us.

1 John 2:1-6 (NIV)
2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God[a] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

One who is born of God cannot continue in sin because he is saved by a Gospel Faith in Lord Jesus – following Him.

Romans 6:16-18 (WEB) 16 Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God, that, whereas you were bondservants of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were delivered. 18 Being made free from sin, you became bondservants of righteousness.

Occupy as a Force of Good – The Spirit working with your Faith.

By faith, we are responsible to be holy onto God, to live by the Spirit and to offer every part of ourselves to God as instruments of righteousness . . .

Romans 8:12-13 (WEB)
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Galatians 6:8-9 (WEB) 8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

Living out our faith in obedience to our rightful Lord and Savior is not works, but is the New Life that comes from faith.

Romans 6:13-14 (WEB)
13 Also, do not present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under law, but under grace.
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey — whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

1 Peter 1:13-16 (WEB)
13 Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ— 14 as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance, 15 but just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy; for I am holy.” [Leviticus 11:44-45]

This is the New Life, and is the Salvation of God through faith in Jesus, our Lord.

Sin that Leads to Death

There is a big difference between sins which lead to death to that of a faithful person who otherwise commits a sin in weakness. The sins that lead to death are those sins we refuse to turn from that then become vices that we allow to master us – to have dominion over the Spirit that indwells us by faith.

Sin which God forgives are sins we committed in weakness, and may have been deliberate, but that we are were very sorry for and humbly turn away from and ask God to forgive, and then re-commit our lives to God in holiness.

Hebrews 3:12-13 (NIV) 12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

As I understand Hebrews 3:12-13, a Christian who allows himself to live in any sin, and not turning away of it, then they have disobeyed the living God. They are making a conscious choice to deny Christ Jesus as their Lord so they may follow their new Lord – the sinful vice which they now serve. Therefore, they are resisting God’s Spirit who lives in them, and in essence are disowning Christ as Lord over their entire lives so they can serve that sin-vice.

Such a person living in any sin will refuse to believe that they have disowned Jesus as Lord, but that is what they are doing by allowing sin to have dominion over Christ’s Spirit living in them. We can only have one master. See also James 1:12-16

Committing a sin that we turn from, and then continue steadfastly in our walk with God is not the same thing as deliberately living in unrepentant sin, which is actually disowning Lord Jesus as the one Master of your life, and you are resisting and grieving His Spirit who lives in you; you have lost your Gospel Faith. “Hebrews 3:12-13” makes this clear to me and is in line with what Jesus and the other Apostles taught.

2 Timothy 2:10-16 (WEB)
10 Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones’ sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 This saying is trustworthy:

“For if we died with him, we will also live with him.
12 If we endure, we will also reign with him.
If we deny him, he also will deny us.
13 If we are faithless, he remains faithful; for he can’t deny himself.”

14 Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord, that they don’t argue about words, to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear.

It has been most illuminating. I always knew, those who claim not to commit sin had set the bar at an extremely low level. But to say if you covet you do not commit sin as you are not under law goes further than I have heard previously. Therefore if a born again believer murders, steals, commits adultery, takes the Lords name in vain, bears false witness or covets, they have not committed sin as they are not under law.
The born again believer is not under law, and that means not under righteousness of obeying the law. That has nothing to do with a belief you cannot sin by coveting.

Well that settles that. How about we celebrate by getting drunk together, as getting drunk is not one of the ten.

I don't like to get drunk, sorry. If you can show me where I wrote that sin is only transgressing the things mentioned, please do

A few days ago someone wrote:

''I have found, Believers do not relinquish their core beliefs, regardless of what is shown to them out of Scripture which directly contradicts such beliefs.

Believers in general do not read, study Scripture to learn anything new that they might not have learned before or been taught, they read and study to only Re-Enforce those Traditions and Doctrines which they already believe, making that core belief even more steadfast no matter how false it might have been to begin with.

Believers do not QUESTION their beliefs as such, they stick with what they have already learned.''

Im not sure they applied the above to themself, just others

It was applied for many many wears until the truth broke forth, out of the darkness of false teaching.

The power of sin is the law 1Cor15:56

The law comes in two parts, what is written in the law, and the penalty for transgression of it. Which part of the law, or both parts is the true power of sin?
Paul wrote:
For sin shall no longer be your master for you are not under law but under grace. Not being under law means not being under the condemnation of the law. The law God desires you to follow is no longer an external law, it is an internal law, written in the mind and placed on the heart of believers. Anything that makes you conscious you sin by so doing is law written in the mind and placed on the heart, for: Sin is the transgression of the law

God did not remove what is holy, just and God, he placed it in your heart and mind. It lives there within you. But you die to righteousness of obeying it. Therefore, your sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more

You don't know what you are saying therefore, you point the finger of accusation at what you do not understand.

Therefore, if a believer murders, steals, commits adultery, takes the Lords name in vain, bears false witness or covets, they have not been Born Again and are none of His but are the Children of the Devil.
Therefore, it is back to my original point, if a person fails to perfectly uphold what is written in the commandment(thou shalt not covet) they have not been born again and are children of the devil according to the above. Therefore, if a person does not perfectly obey what is written in law relating to the inner man, law that only they and God need know they break, they are children of the devil and have not been born again.
The measure you use to judge others will be used to judge you Matt7:2
