I guess I get it, since palm branches aren't going to be readily available in those areas they can just transpose the symbolism of the palm branches to pine in these unusual circumstances. If Jerusalem had been on the Penobscot River in 33AD then they would've used pine when he entered the city..

Man I'm sore from all these mental gymnastics. Need to stretch...

We’re doing palms. Drive by style.
Use what you got fam. If the Son of Man shows up and you got palms, lay them at His feet. If you’ve got pussywillows do likewise. He is the King of glory and shouldn’t have to walk on dirt.

You can also use Bay leaves from the Laurel tree. They are aromatic and give off their distinctive smell when stepped on.
Palm Sunday is my daughter Daphne's name day, as Daphne is the Greek name for the Laurel tree. I didn't make the connection until a few years ago, but bay leaves get their name from the feast day of Palm Sunday. In Greek it is "των Βαΐων"
