The parable of the Sheep/Goats make it very clear we must help others, or be shipped off to hell after judgment, So that's a start.

There are several lists in the bible of things that will get us sent to Hell, as well. I'll get them for you. And I'm just taking what is absolutely necessary to please God now, but I believe we should go beyond that, as in practice being passive/humble...within reason anyway.

Here are some of my favorites, some go into detail, others on how how we should act in general. And a few for good measure.

In the end, practice still makes perfect. :)

1 Cor 6:9-10
Gal 5:19-21
Eph 5:3-6
Rev. 22:12-16
Matt 25:41-46
John 5:28-29

In all my years of being at church I have found that there is a tremendous emphasis on being godly - yet no one has bothered to tell me how to attain this elusive quality.
Can anyone help a sister out please?

Study the life of Jesus and follow in His steps.

1 Peter 2:20-22

For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.

For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;

follow the Lamb

It begins with trust, faith, etcetera. We cannot do it ourselves, so we trust God so we can connect to His divine essence and He works through us.

It is a maturity thing. In that, as we trust God day by day as we live our lives with Him - We grow. When Jesus said, you must be born again - He was not kidding.

The more we grow, the more the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and the participation in the divine nature becomes more automatic.

Since the pastor is pressured to be "the most spiritually mature person in the room" just by gravity of his position - it makes it hard to grow if he actually isn't. This may make it difficult to teach on spiritual maturity (the answer on how to be Godly) and keep their paid position.

In general, training for righteousness - involves working through our trust issues, because if we cannot trust those made in His image that we have seen, how can we trust God whom we cannot see?

Being grateful and thanking God for everything has been very helpful in bringing me closer to God and have Him work in me, so that He does the doing. Remember Job and how God took pride in Job that He challenged the devil regarding Job. @StarryEyedShoeGazer

There are ways to overcome grievous sin or to live godly (after being saved by God's grace through faith in Christ) (Note: To see a full comprehensive picture of salvation, check out my thread here).

A believer has to be transformed by the renewing of their mind. They have to be willing to dedicate their life entirely to Jesus (holding nothing back). They have to be willing to give up the ways of this world for Jesus. They should stop indulging in worldly movies, music, books, comics, or sports, etc.; For Jesus said, deny yourself, pick up your cross, and come follow me. Granted, this may not be an overnight process. It can take time for a believer to deny themselves in many areas of their life. So they should not be discouraged but they should wait upon the Lord.

In fact, the most important thing for a believer who desires to live godly or holy should at some point drop down upon their knees before God and confess their sins and forsake them to be forgiven whether it be six sins or sixty of them.

Sins (like murder, hate, adultery, theft, etc.) lead unto the lake of fire if not repented of. However, I believe there are different ways to overcome grievous sin by God's Word (the Bible) and with the help of Jesus.

  1. Remove oneself from sinful environments (if possible) and or get rid of things that cause one to sin. In Genesis: Joseph had literally ran away from the temptation of sexual sin.

  2. Pray to God so as not to be tempted. It is part of the Lord’s prayer for a believer to pray so as not to be tempted into sin. God will guide and protect the believer if they are serious in praying for this. In fact, fasting will help a believer with this, as well.

  3. Obey God’s righteous ways. The more the Christian loves God and loves others and obeys His Word and stays in His Word and prays, the more they will not even have a chance to sin or do the wrong thing. For the more the Christian walks in God's Word by the Spirit they will not fulfill the lusts of flesh.

  4. When one is tempted, they should quote Scripture. When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He quoted Scripture to defeat the devil. So when some specific sin is bothering a believer, they should find all the verses they can that are victory verses over that particular sin. A good general verse is, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” A believer can say these verses to themselves silently under their breath (with nobody hearing).

  5. Ask for prayer from other God fearing Christians or godly Christians to help one to overcome certain sins. The Scriptures say, bear ye one another's burdens and thus fulfill the Law of Christ. So a Christian should seek true fellowship and ask for their help.

  6. Hide God’s Word in your heart. Memorize Scripture. David said he hid God’s Word within his heart so that he may not sin against the Lord.

  7. Confess of one's sins. 1 John 1:9 says if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Anyways, I hope what I said helps.

With loving kindness to you in Christ,

Sincerely,

~ J.

Excellent question sister, personally I don’t think it’s possible to attain perfection in this life although I do believe we can strive to be godly as best we can in this life. When I fall I just dust myself off and get back up and keep trying. I think that’s all anyone can do.

This is the law.It doesn't say how to go about it.

Prayer and reading Scripture, study scripture, more prayer, and connect with the body of Christ (e.g. the church)

Other than that practice makes perfect. It's not magic, it takes effort at times, being more mindful of your words and actions...

You just try and do better today than you did yesterday.. but don't don't don't neglect prayer.

Full Godliness will not be attained until, that day, we are changed in a blink of an eye. Revelation speaks about that.

However, Christians are instructed and shown by Jesus Christ how to live a Godly lifestyle. This begins with repentance, allowing God to guide you and to have faith in Him (believing in Jesus Christ), and listening to His Spirit.

We are to follow the two laws given to us by Jesus Christ: Matthew 22:38-40 as love is the fulfilment of the Law. :yellowheart:

This is a depiction of wearing Jesus Christ like a white garment/robe.

I do not understand the concept of being Godly. I do not want to be God like. Is that not what Adam and Eve did in the garden. God made us human beings. He loved us and we screwed up and He did not destroy us. He put us out into this world to learn to be as he made us to be, to be co-creators of beauty and wonders to care for this world and it's diversity of fauna and flora and peoples of all kinds. We were to be the best human beings that we could be. But we were failing badly so he sent us the "Man Jesus".
He did not come as God but as man to show us what we could do if we TRUST in God's plan and be loving and compassionate, not judging but be examples as he showed us.
We are to bring healing. We are to be as fully human as we can be, to use our bodies and brains to bring peace and not war: love and not vengeance. To be servants not lord it over others.
Remember it was those of the Jewish establishment who betrayed their position to serve to crush the people that Jesus condemned.
I would not like to be in the shoes of the churches that support the various state or nations. Jesus was not a nationalist he healed whoever came to him.

In love
Jay

Godliness is both impossible and the easiest quality we can aspire to. We have no hope in ourselves. Lord Jesus lives in us to be all that we should be but can't be. Trying to be godly (and yes, not many people know what that means) means certain failure - Romans 7. When we realise and accept our helplessness, we need to turn away from ourselves and discover God's solution to the problem. Our heavenly Father is not unjust. He does not demand from us without providing the answer.

The cross terminates all that we are in Adam. In Christ we are raised for the dead to be new creations. Lord Jesus lives in us to be our new life. As we learn to cooperate with Lord Jesus, we will find that old habits, sins, bondages, fears and doubts will evaporate and the fruit of the Spirit will become evident. It's a continual process of change by exchange. Progress depends on our willingness to be changed. Most Christians struggle because it's hard to let go of independence, rebellion, stubbornness and pride.

Romans 7 makes depressing reading until you get to the end of the chapter. Then it is the note of victory! Romans 8 expounds and explains the victory that it ours in Christ. Please be aware that it is not automatic. We have it all potentially. The experience depends on our willing cooperation with the Lord Jesus.

Failure is not something to fear. We do not need to wallow in self pity over it. Most Christians do not know themselves. We imagine that if we try hard enough, we will change ourselves. God lets us fail in order to shatter our illusions. Troubles and trials also reveal to us where we are at in reality. We may think that we are patient. A trial may arise that shows us if we are patient or not.

It's a journey, it is at times seemingly impossible, at other times life seems blissful beyond imagination. Yet we grow in the hard times, not the times of rest. God knows what we can endure. His grace is always sufficient.

I'm hardly representative of Godliness, and I wouldn't wish what I've been through on anyone, except for one thing --to find Christ to be what I need more than anything else. Well, that, and to find out that anything good in me is God doing it in me, not even for the sake of my Godliness, but for his own purposes. I have found enormous satisfaction in HIM, not in my successes, as even those are his doing.

This is found through, as you seem to possess, a desire for Godliness, and through Bible reading --many many pages at a sitting. SEARCH for answers to your questions, but do not become disheartened when it may be decades before you begin to find them. They are there. In the end, even your own Godliness is secondary to God's using your for his own sake, and that is what we are here for. THAT is my satisfaction.

Methods you hear of are good, and disciplines, even submitting yourself to the instruction of others, I don't mean to discredit those things, but don't trust them --trust God, trust his Word.
