Some of the more geeky ones would get the latest for the slightly better specs - something you can 100% live without. Which is still wrong.

Some would justify that "wasteful" habit because their spending helps these companies stay in business and give people jobs.

Which is probably true.....But the habit is also contrary to the Lord's ways. And our Lord is telling us to invest in the poor, NOT in the rich.

Mass marketed products made largely in third world countries provides starvation wages for thousands of workers and great wealth for the owners and investors.

1 john...forgot the verse...but its do not love anything in the world or of the world.

So what does that imply? How technical? Does this mean the worldy ways of sin? Or literally everything? I have a cell phone...that's worldly...and I do like that I have information at my finger tips. I like to go to the movies..I like to decorate my home..(examples)

Am I taking this too literal? I mean when he says do not love ANYTHING in this world...kinda makes me feel this way.

Quite simply, as Paul said in Corinthians, all things are lawful for us, but all things are not beneficial.

We can enjoy things like TV, radio, movies, even a beer or glass of wine, but not to desire these things above the Lord! The big issue is motive. Why am I doing what I am doing? There is nothing wrong with nearly all things (TV is generic- but the content of a show may make it bad for us as believers).

So be free! If the Spirit or the Word convicts you of something- then you know that is forbidden ground!

Romans 14 is the ultimate measuring tool . Instead of meat offered to idols, just place _______________ whatever you are concerned about.

I live in a 3rd world country.

The cheapskate foreign companies still don't give their female employees free shuttle service. Many of women get raped or robbed at 2am going to and from work.

Yeah, they work that late to sync their time with their USA or UK counterparts and obviously, the income won't be enough to even buy the cheapest car.

My sister got robbed at gunpoint several times already. Many of these things go unreported (Police are useless). I'm getting her out of there.

Why take those jobs if they're so dangerous? Because we probably starve if we don't? Not a lot of other jobs pay better so it's a bit about money... The other jobs would have you living in the slums.

Not sure if I'll say thank you to that or have a taste of your own medicine!

You agree these companies are the problem?

They are acting like criminal syndicates, exploiting the financial destitution of 3rd world citizens to work for them at very little pay so these greedy companies can maximize their profit margins.

Everyone shares the blame, from producers to consumers. There's a saying in business: "Nothing happens until something gets sold."

The biggest problem is overpopulation in third world countries. In fact that's the primary reason that they are third world countries.

Doesn't John also say, God is love, and God so loved the world?

There's probably something philosophical there.

I mean, if we're not careful, we can become the people who lose all sense of natural compassion if we read it wrong.

(as it is written: a man who respects God, avoids all extremes)

15 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." (1 John 2:15-17).

Back in 2014, I felt uneasy reading 1 John 2:15-17.
In 2016, that started to change.

In fact, 1 John 2:15-17 is why I believe salvation is a process. After we are saved by God's grace, I believe we then enter into the Sanctification Process (Which is God making us to live a holy life). Many times this holy walk with our Lord takes time for people to slowly accept over a period of time. I had to accept certain truths before God started to talk to my heart about secular movies and music. When I put away secular movies, and music I later got rid of the Christian movies over a period of time, too. Long story it would be to talk about this. Anyways, the point here is that our love for God has to be greater than the things of this world. If this is the case, then it will eventually show in our actions someday.

To hate this world is the same as when He tells us to hate parents, wife, children etc.

It is not that we can not enjoy things in this world, it is that we do not cling to the things or ways of this world.

We are not to choose anyone, anything or even love the ways of this world (pursuit of comfort, power, praise from others... etc.) above chosing God.

For example:

Abraham, he was led to put his son Isaac up on the alter and sacrifice him. Was Abraham wrong to love his son? No.

He would have been wrong IF he chose to disobey God, because the love of his son would have been proven higher by his disobedience than his love for God, making his son an idol.

If I love my car, there is nothing wrong in that I enjoy my car. It is only wrong IF my priorities are out of control and those things I enjoy do not remain in their proper place.

1) God
2) People
3) Things

God is not about taking the fun out of life, God is about that "fun" remaining where it is intended.

Physical relations for example, good under the umbrella of marriage, but those desires spill outside of its intended space of marriage, is wrong.

Everything has its place, and those things that are not within themselves sin... are fine, as long as they remain in their proper place in your heart.... again, God ALWAYS being first, people second and things behind human life.

IF God is first, we are okay when people and things are taken away, because God being the most important, will never fade or leave.

Most movies, music, and other forms of entertainment are riddled with a message of sin. I believe in time we will learn to hate these kinds of things in our love for God because God hates sin. Also, reading 1 Timothy 6 on riches should be a wake up call for some if they were to just read it and believe it, as well. This plays in part with the third seed that was choked by thorns in the Parable of the Sower.

A person of the world loves the things of the world.
A person who is of Christ loves the things of Christ.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

What does man not do?

Matthew 22:
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Self interest is the way of man and the world we have made in out own image.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” - Matthew 6:19-21

"He said: 'Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.'" - Job 1:21

To me what is being indicated is that God should be put first because if we place too much importance on objects or passions then our heart is with the world and not God. Satan took away most of Job's family and wealth thinking Job would then curse God. But the Bible says Job did not charge God with wrongdoing.

However, this is not to say we shouldn't appreciate what we have. We should be thankful and view what we have as blessings from God. We're just not meant to place anything above God.

How about what He commanded us to do after putting His will before our own... loving all as self?
Yes, if we love all as blessings from God, as in a way part of God since animals and people are His creations, then a pure love, not a lustful or earthly love, of ourself and others becomes another aspect of loving God.

So what does that imply?

What is your breaking point where you choose possessions over Christ? What are you not willing to give up or leave behind to follow Christ? Does God become unjust because you cannot 'have'?

To the point, what is in your life that you do not believe is worth giving up to follow Christ? Or even who? for that matter...

Hi Littlek, I think you are referring to 1 John 2:15. Verse 16 goes on to describe the kind of things that the Apostle is telling us to avoid. Here is the entire passage to consider.

1 John 2
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

--David
"When the Scripture speaks, God speaks" ~ Martin Luther
The verses above was said by the Holy Spirit through John the Apostle. There are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit(which is not a Ghost as is written in English language, but a Person-John16:v.12-15): and these three are One. As said Martin Luther"When the Scripture speaks, God speaks", oh yes, the Word is God, the Word is from Eternity to Eternity. By the way, there was an Eternity before Adam, and there will be an Eterrnity after the END of this Millennium, the seventh and last Millennium, or seventh and last Day, the Lord's Day.

The Word is God, God is from everlasting to everlasting. Aleluiaaaa!

The biggest problem is overpopulation in third world countries. In fact that's the primary reason that they are third world countries.

While overpopulation will always be huge problem, the big businesses and organized crime actually see it as a great business opportunity for many reasons.

The biggest problem in many 3rd world countries is actually corruption in the government. Embezzlng of funds from the lowest and highest levels of the government, profits from deals with criminal syndicates, etc. We're talking billions of dollars for a small country. The government itself is like the biggest crime syndicate.

Ironically, the issue is strongly related to this thread. What drives this behavior is an inflated value of material wealth. They accumulate material wealth, often at the cost of the poor.

Hmm..are you directly asking me, or just making a point? I guess when one asks a question on here and you don't know the person, it's hard to assume this person's walk with christ.
I didn't say I choose anything over Christ...I was just merely asking what does "do not love anything in the world." "Anything"
It's a balance.
