A day after closing Oklahoma stores, Hobby Lobby begins worker layoffs
Oklahoma-based retail craft store giant Hobby Lobby began laying some employees off Friday, a day after it shut down its Oklahoma stores and cut affected employee pay in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Hobby Lobby employees told The Frontier that 32 employees in the company’s art and creative department were given notice on Friday that their jobs had been terminated....

The letter also states that the layoff is permanent, encouraged employees to file for unemployment and stated that a Hobby Lobby representative would come by the employees’ homes to drop off any personal belongings and pick up any Hobby Lobby-issued equipment and badges.
tulc(thinks this must be pretty disheartening on top of everything else going on) :sigh:

What did you expect them to do?

Did you know the employees are instantly eligible for unemployment and will receive the equivalent of their full salary?

Did You know that Hobby Lobby is not the only one laying off? They are not the only non essential company doing this.

Why focus solely on One company???

What is it about Hobby Lobby that puts such a big target on their back?

It probably has to do with unemployment benefits and how they want them to file some places ask you if you expect to be recalled within certain period of time and they probably wanted them to put no. And while it feels terrible to have to file for unemployment most business aren't going to survive if they close down and keep paying people.
You might want to start rationing your coffee to man you don't run out mid outbreak.

actually, since I roast coffee for a christian coffee shop I'm probably okay as long as it doesn't go longer then 6 months. Plus? I have the impression coffee (and by extension coffee roasters) are one of those "essential types of supplies" no one wants to run out of. I roast by myself in a windowless area in the back of a (during this time) mostly empty building. so "social distancing" is the least of my problems.
tulc(is probably going to be roasting tomorrow)

It does seem easier for a business with less than 500 employees:
Congress Approves Economic Relief Plan for Individuals and Businesses

It appears to me the idea is to allow large corporations to radically alter their long term plans of how many to employ in the future?.... They can lay off people, with flexibility about how many to rehire once this is over (these larger businesses). Interesting implication. Perhaps corporate lobbyists would have had input on that one can speculate or ask.

Standard anti-Christian anti-Conservative bias. Hobby-Lobby refused to bow and grovel before the altar of abortion on demand and therefore they are hated.

Sincerely, To use their part of the $500 billion now available explicitly to preserve jobs.

The federal money just passed Congress and signed by Trump, to preserve jobs.

Coronavirus stimulus bill: what it does for Americans, small business

@CyberPaladin

And those that it make sense in most instances will do so. They do have to look at alot of things especially if you have fully shutdown because even then you have some fixed costs. Also there is much uncertainty for business loans & deferred payments after things start up how fast they're going to have to pay things back. The tax credits won't really help them if the companies go insolvent before next years filing. Also the employees will being getting the state allowed unemployment plus $600 a week for 4 months so I'm guessing most aren't doing to be bad.

Think again. We'd like to hear any business making effort to take care of employees as best feasible. When one that claims to be Christian might not, it's a big deal to Christians. We want to know more, because the label 'Christian' means something to us!

Yes, we agree on that (I especially agree, having run a business) -- see post #7. That's what i think is happening, in the bigger picture.

All you need to know is that ever since the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby the pro-abortion crowd has been livid. Hobby Lobby is hated for two primary reasons. The founders practice Christianity and they dared to defend their beliefs.

Posting an article in the attempt to cast further dispersion on Hobby Lobby is nothing more than an extension of that philosophy.

Here is something missed in the OP

First, Hobby Lobby has over 13,500 employees

The relief packages are as follows:

Paycheck Protection Loans:
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will guarantee loans with terms of up to 10 years and interest rates of up to 4% to businesses with fewer than 500 employees.

Hobby Lobby does not qualify for help

Expanded access to U.S. Small Business Administration Economic Injury Disaster Loans: As part of its disaster assistance program, the SBA is providing working capital loans of up to $2 million to small businesses and nonprofits affected by the coronavirus. These loans carry an interest rate of 3.75% for small businesses and 2.75% for nonprofits. Loan repayment terms vary by applicant, up to a maximum of 30 years. The stimulus updated the program so that sole proprietors and businesses with fewer than 500 employees qualify,
Hobby Lobby does not qualify for help.

@tulc hope that goes well with your coffee :wave

Yes, and here in this legislation, touted to be about preventing huge job loss, reduce that job loss, it seems that keep the jobs incentive is mostly for smaller businesses under 500 employees. But larger corporations got a different situation: no strong impetus to keep employees. It makes sense as legislation...for...larger profits....

There is a middle road, but looking at this legislation....I'm wondering, after reading in that link, that the incentive seems to be more for the profit-maximizing road?....

(Update: more detail: Congress Approves Economic Relief Plan for Individuals and Businesses)

? What do you think?
