Civil defense temporarily overrides* civil rights. They will still be there when it is over.

*I could have said "trumps," but that would have been a bit "on the nose..." ;)

It depends.

depends on what? Are you saying your freedom to move is more important then thousands or millions of live? That if New york was ground zero for a ebola level dieae that was also airborne and far easier spread, that locking down new york to prevent the spread was infringing upon freedom? Freedom are not absolute, your freedom ends where other begin.

Quarantines have been viewed as constitutional. All rights have limits.

The issue with this wasn't whether it was constitutional, but whether it made sense. Among other things, imagine trying to enforce it. It's also too late.

The governor of Florida apparently instigated it, because people from NY were coming to Florida. Well, no surprise, since he didn't close the beaches. Some local areas did, but likely too late. Florida is now a cluster itself, with about the same number of cases as Washington.

Our freedom is sacred. Millions of our soldiers died for it. We cannot take our freedoms for granted just because of an emergency.

Our freedom is sacred -- but not absolute.

There are rules that we all follow; some of them involve temporarily limiting certain freedoms in the event of an emergency.

It’s funny because during the Spanish flu those same soldiers seemed pretty ok with the various quarantine measures that were enacted to protect Americans.

Our Constitution allows for freedom of association. It would therefore be unconstitutional to quarantine New York.

It is a true that there is a long legal history of the right to travel freely from state to state. However, a state of emergency "can also be used as a rationale or pretext for suspending rights and freedoms guaranteed under a country's constitution". I'm glad Trump has backed down, but likely the actual constitutionality of such an act could only be determined through the courts.

You mention freedom of association. Surely the orders about staying in groups less than 50 or less than 10 would fall afoul of that right if it were an absolute right.

Does Trump have any legal power to order this?
The President is not bound by mortal decree of any sort. We should be appreciative of his selfless and courageous management of this threat to humanity in America.
