I'm curious though - if we agree that the world is 100% under God's control - then what is God's purpose in allowing this particular pandemic? Why the Black Death? For that matter, why the great tyrants, or wars, or other catastrophes?

The more I think about these things, the more I'm thrust back on the simple fact we don't know what God is up to, or how He works.

I keep going back to the Scriptural verse - Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."

Ultimately the pandemic is tied up with the general question of suffering and death - what is God's purpose in allowing it, and why is there so much of it, so unevenly distributed?

Peter sank because he looked at the waves, instead of Christ. The real question is, who is Christ, and what is his purpose for you? The water was just something to walk on, and the troubles are just something to overcome.
