South Korea flattened the curve without lockdowns. Their factories are open.
They started contact-tracing immediately, and had plenty of testing. That's not an approach we can use at this stage, though it's frustrating that we didn't use it when this business started.

My sense is that it's spread widely enough that the whole country needs to do close to a lockdown for a few weeks. Once it calms down, if we start planning, we can look at other approaches.

Personally I think a quarantine of NY is just silly. It's clear that clusters are already growing a number of different places. I think it's attractive to Trump because if he can confine it to a few states the rest can avoid shutting down. But as far as I can tell, that's not realistic. Chicago, New Orleans, and Detroit are starting up. Also I think some smaller places.

As has been repeated over and over. They had experience, planning, political unity and clear message for disciplined populace so they acted fast and got it under control.

You guys have Trump for clear messages and political unity, hoarders for grabbing guns and toilet paper with all the Alex Jones types screaming you only need tin foil hats to combat this mental projection.

So it might be bit optimistic to believe you could flatten any curve without some drastic measures.

And South Korea was not in the midst of a culture war which seriously divided the country when the virus hit, ether.

As of right now, we’re at 506 deaths for the day and over 19000 new cases. Until we at least have a day or two that isn’t worse than the day that came before, I don’t even think it’s realistic to talk about opening back up.

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he's considering a short-term quarantine of New York state, New Jersey, and parts of Connecticut, as cases of coronavirus continue to rise.

"We're thinking about certain things. Some people would like to see New York quarantined because it's a hotspot. ... We might not have to do it, but there's a possibility that sometime today we'll do a quarantine, short-term, two weeks on New York. Probably New Jersey, certain parts of Connecticut," he told reporters as he departed the White House.

"I'd rather not do it, but we may need it," the President said.

Trump said that the possible quarantine would be "enforceable" and "restrict travel" from those parts of the tri-state area.

"Restrict travel, because they're having problems down in Florida, a lot of New Yorkers going down. We don't want that," he said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that he spoke with Trump on Saturday morning, but that the two had not discussed a quarantine for the state.

"I don't even know what that means. I don't know how that could be legally enforceable," the Democratic governor said during in a news conference in Albany. "And from a medical point view, I don't know what you would be accomplishing."

---

In a gaggle with reporters Saturday, Trump said he was considering the measure because New York had become a viral hot spot. He spoke to reporters again about an hour later and said governors from other states had asked him to consider it.

Those governors are probably more appreciative.

Probably a good idea.
At least Trump is considering it.

Note you said “his people” and not “Americans.” I do not for one second believe he considers those who won’t vote for him as “his people.” He won’t care about “the other” at all and will act accordingly.

The problem never was the people that didn’t consider Trump their president, the problem was that Trump didn’t consider himself their president. The first group are complainers on a street corner. The second one has real power in this country and wields it as such.

Trump is supposed to be the President of all Americans. He unfortunately is too immature to act as such.

Coronavirus: Trump backs away from New York quarantine

US President Donald Trump has said quarantining New York "will not be necessary", after the state's governor said doing so would be "preposterous".

Mr Trump said the latest decision was taken on the recommendation of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

Our Constitution allows for freedom of association. It would therefore be unconstitutional to quarantine New York.

Our freedom is sacred. Millions of our soldiers died for it. We cannot take our freedoms for granted just because of an emergency.
We also have the freedom to take good advice. Under the circumstances social isolation is good advice.

You didn't write the US Constitution, nor do you have the authority to rewrite it.
So I don't have the freedom to take good advice in an emergency? In that case those soldiers died for nothing.

there are times when freedom should be given up, like say...a plague killing half a thousand americans a day and growing? your freedom is not worth more then other peoples lives who are not wanting go give them up.
