I agree! That last thing the church needs is a virus outbreak
caused by cramming people into confessional booths in close quarters.
The more people can keep their distance, the better.

Ahhhhhh-Chooo!

Oh.
So it's only due to the virus?

If so, thanks for the info.

(thought it might be a new procedure).

That’s what I meant. I personally see it as an act of mercy. I do not know what else the Church is supposed to do during this time while trying to curb the spread of the virus.
Yes, I understand the reason now.

I understand what you mean now. No it’s not the norm. Things will go back to normal after the virus has been contained.

I 'm getting a visual of a person rattling off a list of sins through the speaker menu and then being told to pull around to the second window for the penance. The church could always set up a cell phone confession but the NSA might be listening in.

Well your vision would be wrong.

Oh I agree. It won’t be forever. :)

A very strange Lent it been!
Like my priest said recently - it’s not the Lent we want, but it’s the Lent we have. Seeing the churches closed is one of the most surreal parts of this.

I find drive thru confessions rather horrifying because it seems to be a cold
procedure and does not have any of the sacramental qualities to it.
I'll certainly grant that a drive through wouldn't be the most inspiring venue, but will defend to the death the fact that it would be just as sacramentally valid as a confession made anywhere else in the world.

I didn't say it wouldn't be valid.
I said it would lose the qualities of a sacrament.....
Absolution might still be valid --- I'm assuming most priests are agreeing to this.
For instance,,,would you be in agreement with a phone-in confession?

I mean, why even continue with this....
it's only due to the virus and this will soon end.

It seems to me that the fundamental, most signficant quality of a sacrament is that it is a means by which we receive supernatural grace, and if it's valid then it does that.

For instance,,,would you be in agreement with a phone-in confession?
A phoned-in confession is not valid.

@GodsGrace101 I think you answered your question with this:
Confession is like speaking to God....God doesn't work well in a drive-thru.
It requires some personal talking to each other...
Some thinking...some discussing.

Jesus Christ is our High Priest and you can talk/pray/confess to Him at any time. :yellowheart:

Two entirely different things. Don’t play dumb.

What needs to be explained? A priest can hear a person's confession anywhere, anytime. So why not make it easier and safer than standing in line inside the church?
Yup

Frankly I see no significant difference between confessing in your car seat and confessing in a chair in a room.

I suppose the primary issue is not where, but who. Who is actually hearing your confession and does He have the power to forgive your sins?

I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I don't find the pandemic horrifying...
and I live in Italy.
We should take very good care of ourselves, now especially...
but other than that, the time comes to die and it will come.

I find drive thru confessions rather horrifying because it seems to be a cold
procedure and does not have any of the sacramental qualities to it.

Do you approve of it?
Confession can be received anywhere. Today because of the pandemic, this will protect people from being infected.

Peace
Mark
