Trump says Whitmer isn’t ‘stepping up’ as governors plead for coronavirus supplies

President Donald Trump again criticized Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic during an interview on Fox News, responding to the governor’s complaints that his administration hasn’t stepped up to provide overwhelmed hospitals with medical supplies.

The president, speaking with Sean Hannity by phone Thursday, said governors shouldn’t solely rely on the federal government to supply personal protective gear that has become scarce as hospitals deal with an exponentially increasing number of COVID-19 cases. Whitmer repeatedly called on Trump to address a shortage of coronavirus tests, protective masks, gowns and other protective equipment.

“Your governor of Michigan, I mean, she’s not stepping up,” Trump said. “I don’t know if she knows what’s going on, but all she does is sit there and blame the federal government, she doesn’t get it done."

Trump said Whitmer has “not been pleasant," but other governors have been supportive of his response to the emergency. He characterized a recent phone call with governors across the country as “a love fest.”

Made me tear up for the people of Michigan who are stuck with what seems to be a whiney feckless governor.

Maybe another Governor can help instruct her on how to use, not just the Federal Government, but her own administration to get things done.

Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center to maximize coordination with state, local and federal agencies, as well as private partners, and to help prevent the spread of the disease. The administration continues to work with schools, businesses, medical providers and local health departments to make sure they have the information and resources they need to collaboratively address this health crisis. MDHHS also launched a campaign to raise awareness of appropriate hand washing techniques to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses.

The White House doesn’t normally release details about the president’s golf outings, but on Sunday, pitcher Patrick Corbin posted a series of photos on his Instagram of the game with the president. “So this happened today,” he wrote. “Got to golf with the President!” Others who took part in the outing included first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, catcher Kurt Suzuki, shortstop Trea Turner, and former outfielder Jayson Werth, according to the Hill.
