Dems seize on 'slush fund' to oppose Republican rescue package
As Senate Democrats went to the floor Sunday night to vote — the first time they’d been there in days — they had one thing on their minds: a secret “slush fund” for Corporate America.

That’s what Democrats are calling a $500 billion “Exchange Stabilization Fund” included in the massive Senate GOP proposal to rescue the U.S. economy from the coronavirus crisis. The fund, which would come under the control of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, is designed to aid distressed industries. It includes $58 billion for U.S. airline and air cargo companies, a source of significant controversy during the last three days of closed-door talks between senators of both parties and the White House.

But the language drafted by Senate Republicans also allows Mnuchin to withhold the names of the companies that receive federal money and how much they get for up to six months if he so decides.
tulc(thought this was interesting)

Yep... the same people that praised a multi trillion dollar corporate slush fund for companies that engaged in bad business practices which plunged this country into a great recession are now complaining about helping this nation's travel and hospitality industry through a pandemic that is disproportionately affecting them through no fault of their own.

Hypocrisy points goes to the dems on this one...

So who do the dems hurt? The working poor of course, now out of work.

If the government is going to force businesses to shut down and cease doing business then they need to figure out how to cover that loss. Otherwise, stop the shut down and let everyone get back to normal.

Their choice.

The Democrats clearly need to get their way here before this bill is agreed upon and passed into law. And I hope the Democrats do get their way here. And I'm not even a Democrat. But who knows, asuming we all survive this, and that the Democrats get their way here, and that this nation somehow returns back to normal as opposed as to how it is now, I might even switch parties and become a Democrat again.

This is not a slush fund as liberals are saying, its about saving Jobs and about propping up the economy during this crisis. Liberals are spreading misinformation about this bill. Democrats must think that building windmills somehow fights this virus outbreak. Meanwhile the republicans are trying to save Jobs

The reason why I thought the Dems should get their way, initially none of the money in the Bill was for any of the elderly who might be living on a fixed income, like drawing SS, as an example. Apparently it is now included in the Bill to also help out struggling people like these as well, thanks to the Dems. I have been super critical of the Dems in the past, but what they did here makes up for some of the things I have been critical of them in the past about.

As to windmills getting included in the Bill, I couldn't care less if it did or didn't, what I do care about is the less fortunate in this country, and that at least someone in our Government is not trying to exclude them like the Republicans were, but were trying to include them as well, like the Dems apparently were.

I doubt any republicans would stand in the way of that. The description of this bill that i heard about did give money to people who had little or no tax liability. That would seem to include those on SSI.

But why take money away from people in order to pay for windmills? Give that money to hospitals and people. It seems like democrats misused this bill to push their new green deal agenda. Even if one could argue that they should have passed the bill anyway, why are democrats even putting that pork in the bill? Where are their priorities?

I at least agree here, after thinking on it some more. This example clearly shows that the Democrats priorities would not be in the right place here. Yet in other areas it would be. So maybe for me to not care whether that got added or not, is not being realistic here. And I for sure am not for the new green deal. I never was, I never will be. This coronavirus crisis bill should not be where this debate belongs. But even so, by the Dems slowing the passing of this bill down, initially those with the lowest income were set to only get half of the 1200 dollars, and now they will get the same amount as the others with a higher income do. At least that's something positive that came out of this delay.

Most of the "we wants" are left out of the above. I wonder why they weren't trumpeted?

It was those with little or no tax liability. Who wrote this bill anyway? Mitch McConnell claimed that democrats wrote this bill.
