I'm not sure if I'm just being naive, I'd like to think I'm not since I work in a news organization and am overwhelmed with news about the virus for eight straight hours a day, five days a week. That said, when I clock out I like to take stock of the benefits of this altered situation.

I step outside and there's clean fresh air, cleaner and fresher than I've seen in a while because of the decreased number of cars on the roads. Far less traffic for the same reasons. More time to spend with family because people aren't constantly on the go. More opportunities to read books*, read holy scripture, or pray the rosary because watching TV only goes so far with the extended amount of time we're spending at home.

This is a chance to refocus. Yeah, there's a ton of terrible stuff happening socially, politically, economically, and spiritually right now. Believe me, I get it, but if we fixate on that we're going to get sucked down the drain. The easy road is to get dark, to spend all our time thinking and talking about the latest numbers and the latest headlines and all the ways people are screwing up or all the ways the virus is ruining the world, but I think there are many better uses of our time. As human beings but more importantly as Catholics. Don't get me wrong: stay informed, but don't over do it.

Just food for thought. What are some of the ways you're enjoying the extra time you're spending at home, or if you're already home in your normal life, are you still finding positive ways to deal with the lack of places outside of the home to go to?

*On a related note: I'm looking forward to dropping a review of Tim and Dave Gordon's new book Rules for Retrogrades here soon.

Although our services are online, I've been taking the time in our icon corner for private prayers more than usual. We've been playing Dungeons and Dragons with our family online since our in-person groups are on hold for the time being and are looking for other online activities. The dog gets walked a LOT :) The biggest silver lining here is learning that a lot can be done remotely or if you do need to get physical products, pick them up curbside. My daughter works for a call center and I needed a 100 ft long Ethernet cable to run to her room. Best Buy had one and although I had to drive 20 miles to get it, I got it done very easily. I do think that as we get adjusted to a new normal after things calm down, we need to look at how we manage things as a society down the road.

The air IS cleaner. When I have to drive around for my work the roads are uncrowded even in rush hour. Life is not hectic. Our priests are increasing access to confessions by having them outdoors where you drive up.

Probably a lot more pregnancies among married people. Probably less among the hookup crowd. And less STD'. All good things.

This is an introvert's heaven, not having to be excessively social all the time.

So, bad news overall, but some positives.

Looking forward to it. Having read 'Rules for Radicals' by Saul Alinsky, I expect some comparison and contrast.

Watching EWTN for Mass, going for a walk, reading my favorite book. Cooking full meals now more than ever--it's relaxing and productive.

I also like the "cleaner" atmosphere. I wish it weren't because of the coronavirus, but it's really nice not to have the stores and streets be so freaking crowded. Some of the buildings that have no cars - - especially the local dying mall -- those things are not pleasant to see though, that looks forlorn. But otherwise it feels a lot less stuffy.
