There is a difference between the medication that is prescribed, and a compound sold without prescription that is formulated to use in a fish tank.

Just like there is a difference between the food grade Diatomaceous Earth that is given to livestock and the Diatomaceous Earth used in pool filters. The food grade DE is given so the animals do not get constipated. (One of the interesting things one learns when spending time in a Mennonite farming community). The non-food grade stuff cannot be given to livestock at all.

As to the medicine, is that the one referred to in Good Morning Vietnam in this quote?

That's right. Time to take that big orange pill and get ready for the Ho Chi Minh two-step.

My last involvement in the Peace Corps was as a Response volunteer in Vanuatu in 2016. At that time they were giving us Mefloquine, the PCMO being down on Chloriquine for some reason.
Falciparum malaria parasites (and some vivax parasites too) in Vanuatu have long been resistant to chloroquine.

But... but ... he said it possibly was a game changer...
So go to your local pet shop and start eating the stuff? No president has that kind of power over people. Not even Donald Trump. There was something else wrong with that guy before he ever heard of this virus to be willing to eat a pet shop parasite treatment for tropical fish. You may want to blame Donald Trump for it, and that's OK if you feel the need.

Yup. This was a long time ago, before the resistance was widespread.

Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure': Woman whose husband died after ingesting chloroquine warns the public not to 'believe anything that the president says'

The wife of an Arizona man who died after ingesting chloroquine phosphate to protect himself from the coronavirus warned the public on Monday not to "believe anything that the president says" and rely on doctors instead.

Banner Health said the man and his wife consumed a version of the chemical that's used to clean aquariums.

"We saw Trump on TV — every channel — and all of his buddies and that this was safe," the woman, who is in critical care after taking the drug with her husband, told NBC News' Vaughn Hillyard. "Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure."

The president has repeatedly touted chloroquine as a "very powerful" treatment against coronavirus and falsely claimed it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This is the most pertinent advice, though there's a caveat.

Asked what her message is to the public after what she and her husband went through, the woman told NBC News, "Oh my God, don't take anything. Don't believe anything that the president says and his people ... call your doctor."

Though everyone certainly should call their doctor rather than relying upon what Trump states, doctors are not impervious to misinformation either, and many have been over-prescribing the anti-malarial drugs. People are persuading anyone with prescribing rights - doctors or dentists - to write large prescriptions for the drugs, demonstrating a hoarding-like mentality. This is extremely problematic. Though they're not a "game changer" considering how little arsenal there is anything potentially of use at combating this is being deployed, and hospitals need to have a steady supply. Additionally, there are people with autoimmune conditions such as lupus who are dependent on these medications now distressed because of the severe shortage.

I don't blame Trump for individual .... bad decision-making. I only blame Trump for encouraging decisions based on poor science and "gut feelings".

There are other sources besides aquarium supplies. Some are even made for people to actually consume.

It's like they got encouragement to use this drug from someone in a position of power... What did they have to lose?

lol no one encouraged couple to take parasite treatment for FISH!

From the article:
The toxic ingredient they consumed was not the medication form of chloroquine, used to treat malaria in humans. Instead, it was an ingredient listed on a parasite treatment for fish.

The stuff they took? Chloroquine Phosphate. Completely different.

If I were guessing? They were taking a chance hoping it was the same thing. Turns out its NOT!

Lost star Daniel Dae Kim has credited an antimalarial drug for his recovery from coronavirus.

So now it's about specificity? An intelligent thing would be to not encourage the use of a particular drug so that you don't have cases like this. There are also overdoses in Nigeria because of this nonsense.

Nigeria records chloroquine poisoning after Trump endorses it for coronavirus treatment

Yep Trump had NOTHING to do with this. It's really typical of foolishness of the human race. It along the same lines as warning labels on irons telling us not to iron our clothes while wearing them. People are just dumb sometimes.

If I would hazard a guess most drugs contain VERY harmful ingredients that if taken in their raw form would most likley kill you. That's why there are prescriptions. Heck Asprin could kill you.

No this kind of thing is solely on the person doing the dumb thing.

Exactly.

In the end, each one of us are responsible for our choices. The President, however, has no business whatsoever characterizing a potential treatment. It's quite simple - turn over the microphone to Dr Facui when such questions come up.

Where would this person have gotten the idea chloroquine could be of any help in this situation?

Where would this person get the idea that eating fish bacteria killer is the same thing as getting a prescription for medication from your doctor?

You still did not answer the question where someone would see chloroquine and think ingesting it in any form would be a good idea. Likewise, the hoarding of this drug by some individuals is spurred on by certain individuals. It's as if someone in authority promoted the idea.

where someone would see chloroquine and think ingesting it in any form would be a good idea.

There are parts of the planet where chloroquine is simply part of life. Malaria is one of the biggest killers on the planet, and chloroquine is an effective tool in the battle. Whilst that may not be in North America, that does not mean it does not matter.

In 2017, it was estimated that 435 000 deaths due to malaria had occurred globally, of which 403 000 deaths (approximately 93%) were in the WHO African Region. Almost 80% of all deaths in 2017 occurred in 17 countries in the WHO African Region and India.
Number of malaria deaths

So for many people ingesting chloroquine is a good idea. However I would hasten to add, genuine medicinal grade, in line with the directions, and not when formulated for cleaning fish tanks. Those places where is is a good idea would include tropical Africa, the South Pacific, much of South East Asia, India, and Pakistan and those countries where Malaria is still a real issue.

Schweps tonic water.

Good stuff. Not enough quinine to be pharmacologically active. But if you drink enough gin and tonics, you won't care.

Off-topic: A great summer drink, BTW, is 1 part gin, 3 parts tonic water, and 1 part freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. Served over plenty of cracked ice. Very refreshing.

I've never tried gin or tonic water but I LOVE grapefruit juice so this sounds bomb. We make grapefruit juice soda w a Soda Stream!!!! It's so good.
