Why are the democrats in congress holding up the corona virus relief bill? What is their problem? People and hospitals need this money now not later.

Senate showdown over pandemic relief stalls as Pelosi preps Democratic bill

The Senate's second attempt to advance a massive $2 trillion bill to provide economic relief amid the COVID-19 pandemic failed Monday afternoon, demonstrating an inability to strike a bipartisan agreement on the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act.

The vote failed 49-46, falling well short of the 60 votes needed to advance to debate on the bill, which represents the third phase of congressional aid to respond to the crisis.

After the vote, Senate Majority Mitch McConnell warned that the Senate might not be able to pass a bill until Friday or Saturday, blasting Democrats for "mindless obstruction."

"While the public is waiting for us to act, while people losing their jobs, losing their income and shutting down the economy which we've had to do to deal with this public health crisis, they're fiddling around with Senate procedure that could, if one senator objected, take us all the way to the end of the week to solve this problem," McConnell fumed. "The American people have had just enough of this nonsense. They wonder where we are. They're looking to us to solve this problem!"

Prior to the vote, Republicans complained Democrats have turned negotiations into a “leftwing episode of Supermarket Sweep.”

McConnell called the GOP proposal a “compromise package” that would provide tens of billions of dollars to hospitals, provide checks to millions of families, prevent layoffs and provide “historic relief” to small businesses.

“Why are Democrats filibustering the bipartisan bill they helped write?” McConnell wondered, ticking through a “Democratic wish list” that he said was preventing an agreement, including tax credits for solar energy and wind energy provisions to force employers to give “special new treatment for big labor,” and new emissions standards for airlines.

“Are you kidding me? This is the moment to debate new regulations that have nothing whatsoever to do whatsoever with this crisis? That’s what they’re up to over there. The American people need to know it,” McConnell, R-Ky., said. “Democrats won’t let us fund hospitals or save small businesses unless they get to dust off the Green New Deal.”

“They ought to be embarrassed,” he said. “This is not a juicy political opportunity, this is a national emergency.”

They want President Trump to promise that he'll magically change the weather or something.

Dems Worried Stimulus Bill Would Stimulate Economy

"This stimulus bill might stimulate the economy -- which would hurt our chances to stop the bad orange man," said Senator Chuck Schumer. "We can't overstate how much damage this would do to our 2020 campaign. The last thing we need is a strong economy going into November."

Democrats Demand Stimulus Bill Include Reparations For Transgender Native Americans Affected By Climate Change

"If we aren't handing billions of dollars to Native Americans with gender dysphoria displaced by our current climate emergency, then what are we even doing here?" shouted Chuck Schumer in a scathing speech outside the Capitol Building. "The American people are waiting for us to pass this bill, and the evil Republicans are stubbornly insisting we don't earmark billions for our transgender indigenous brothers and sisters and others."

Maybe the plan all along is, there is never going to be a bill passed, but just make the American people think there will be. In the meantime, stall. What could possibly happen during this stalling? How about others in the Senate coming down with this virus, where eventually they feel it is no longer safe for any of them to meet together like this. what then? How can they get a bill passed if the Senate is no longer in session because of this Virus crisis? Hopefully I am wrong, yet I can't help thinking, what if I'm not?

Well, they can always meet over something like a zoom call or something of that sort.

They have America over a barrel during this emergency. They want to use the opportunity to impose upon the country policies they could never get through Congress in ordinary times. And they are reluctant to cooperate with any policy that could possibly reflect favorably upon the President.

There's more but that pretty much covers the main points. Thanks for asking.

The Senators that have already self-quarantined, I don't see them doing anything like that. They are not even allowed to vote while not being present at these sessions. If the rest of the Senators decide to eventually self-quarantine, at least for the sake of caution, that puts them in the same boat these other Senators are already in. Some of the Senators that have self-quarantined, are not doing it because they have been tested as positive for having the virus, they are doing it because they were around people who were. And if the rest of these Senators eventually adopt this same mindset before this bill gets passed, what then?

According to the rules, They cannot cast votes unless physically present in the chamber.

That may have to change; at least, under special circumstances. (Besides, virtual attendance wasn't available when said laws were written.)

So what's the Dem side of the story then?

It's not actually the governments job to replace income due to economic slowdowns. That's what savings accounts are for.

A stimulus package is certainly a priority but it is my understanding that the objection is that it is heavily weighted in favour of corporations rather than the people. And the corporate giveaways lack transparency and oversight. I think that the Democrats are correct in this instance.

They have politicized this crisis from the beginning.

Thats false The bill does helps big and small businesses but that's to help save jobs and help the economy. They have to pay back the money money too, its just a lone. Dems want to misuse this bill to pay for unnecessary things that have nothing to do with this crisis.

If that happened they would hold the meeting remotely through video conferencing software.

What if the economic slowdown was caused by the government?
