A man died after ingesting a substance he thought would protect him from coronavirus

An Arizona man died after ingesting chloroquine phosphate in an attempt to protect himself from becoming infected with the coronavirus. The man's wife also ingested the drug and is under critical care.

The drug chloroquine is used to treat malaria, and some early research suggests it may be useful in treating COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus......

A news release from Banner Health, based in Arizona, said the couple, both in their 60s, took an additive called chloroquine phosphate, used to clean fish tanks, to try to prevent infection with the coronavirus.

Within half an hour, both needed to seek emergency medical care. The man later died.

oh my. Fish tank cleaner?

Even the proper formulation administered under medical supervision can have dangerous side effects. I have taken it myself as a malaria preventative with no problems, but they do occur.

Fish tank parasite killer more accurately. There is a reason one gets a prescription for taking this stuff. As in getting the pure stuff and getting a safe dose. That poor guy was really dumb. The treatment, as he self-administered it, was worse than the disease.

I've taken chloroquine phosphate to prevent malaria, and I hated every dose of it. But I took it. If it proves effective for the Wuhan Virus I'll wait until I get sick before I take it, and then only in prescription form.

I have seen that it has been tried in conjunction with other drugs for Covid19.

However someone replied where I saw this, that it also causes problems to the heart.

I have no medical knowledge, I'm just repeating what I have read elsewhere.
A scary thought is that if it was used and the person died, then the cause of death would not be reported as from the virus, but of heart problems.
Just a thought.....

I am so sorry for those who took it, we have to be absolutely VIGILANT that we do not succomb to the massive amount of misinformation that is circulating around.

The best thing still is isolate, wash hands regularly (must be at least 20 seconds to be of any help) and ONLY go out when needed.

If you need to be out where people are you must keep a distance away from them.
Have a sanitiser so you can wash hands whilst out (an alternative is a washcloth wet with antiseptic, dettol etc kept handy in ziplock bag)
When back home wash with soap again as soap is much better than sanitiser because of how it works with the fat in the skin.

Stay safe everyone and draw close to God.

I was supposed to take it while I served in the navy, in the tropics. I could not take it and do my job as it made me drowsy and nauseous. That's not the best when I was working on systems up to 8,000 volts. So I took the very slight risk of getting malaria, which never happened. Fear drives people to do illogical things. The constant flow of wrong and misleading information does not help.

The standard dosages are very small and weekly. If I recall correctly 1 tablet once a week. Of course when I was in PNG it was a supermarket item. When I came back to Australia I was shocked to have to get a prescription for it. I don't believe that it ever truly killed malaria as such, but did reduce a number of the symptoms, and really needed to be taken before you were at risk to build up the shield.

I noted with some interest that when NZ imposed mandatory isolation they exempted the Pacific Islanders, and in reality they would have rates of chloroquine takers amongst them.

As @chevyontheriver suggests it ranks high on the list of disgusting tasting medicines, and I was very pleased when I found you could get them coated, so if your threw it down quickly to the back of the throat you only had to endure a hint of the taste.

If it did prove effective, big if of course, it represents a fairly low cost remedy, as in general it is not an expensive medication.

We must remember that not everyone who contracts the virus will die. A humidifier would be a reasonable, benign purchase. Drinking water is helpful. Cleaning surfaces, washing hands help. Prayer helps:prayer:

...and skipping the aquarium parasite cleanser.

I had to take it when I was in Africa in the Peace Corps. One of our guys decided he didn't need to take it in the dry season, came to visit me, and got malaria at my place. The cure for malaria is just a lot of chloroquine phosphate. He kept throwing it up so I had to give him more. It was no fun. Another PCV that I knew died of falciparum malaria a year later. So nothing to mess around with. My friend recovered, but it was a real 'Where There Is No Doctor' moment. I feel we're in for more of those sorts of moments if the doctors get sick, if the hospitals are full, and if we don't have a treatment like this might actually be.

Just following advice from the Commander-in-Chief? Nah. Nobody is that ill-informed. Except followers of Jim Bakker or Alex Jones...

It's like they got encouragement to use this drug from someone in a position of power... What did they have to lose?
There is literally no president of any party who could convince me to try consuming tropical fish remedies. Sorry. The deficit in thinking was by the aquarist and not the president.

Chloroquine does kill malaria parasites (blood stages of the parasite only, I believe). Or it did until many of them evolved resistance to it.

This is horrible... how do people even make it to old age without the ability to use common sense? If your sick see the doctor, if he gives you medicine then take it as prescribed... that's just not rocket science...

In combination with a z-pack... and the doctors said these things (z-pack and malaria drug) are by prescription only when discussing the comments made by the president.

You cant blame him because someone drank poison! Did they go to the doctor for the z-pack?

My last involvement in the Peace Corps was as a Response volunteer in Vanuatu in 2016. At that time they were giving us Mefloquine, the PCMO being down on Chloriquine for some reason. The side effects were said to be largely psychotropic. Alas, I did not experience any.

You don't fault him for someone drinking poison, but you fault him for suggesting it is something that could work, that is simply irresponsible, and we're now seeing the result of that irresponsibility. As someone in a position of authority, you should not promote such folly. And considering he tends to attack experts and argue he is much smarter, it should be no surprise that his followers would listen to him over their doctor.
