Then it would at least be honest. Likely a first for The Donald

We've had three and a half years to sort through what Trump says. I'm pretty good at it. :D

the exchange is in the first 16 seconds of the above...as an aside, can you supply a scenario where the above exchange was a good one? You know, where the President of the United States in a press briefing, in the middle of a pandemic, when thousands of people are sick and dying, calls a reporter "a terrible reporter"?
tulc(is just curious)

I think Trump’s accusation of sensationalism is an accurate assessment. The media has been guilty of this since the beginning of journalism. There’s no answer he could’ve given that would set people at ease that wouldn’t have been a lie. Was he supposed to say we have the cure? They don’t know yet. What the reporter asked was in reference to the effectiveness of the drug used for the treatment of malaria. Let’s rewind the video a bit and examine the full context of the conversation.

Everyone is different. People often get testy when they are being constantly criticized for every move they make and every word they utter is microscopically examined to find a way to take offence with it.

Except he wasn’t being criticised this time. By his own admission, the journalist tossed him a softball. Swing and a miss...

Except when you listen to the WHOLE interaction - it wasn't a softball at all - it was a "gotcha" question.

No swing and miss - the reporter struck himself out while he was pitching

Really? Because most governors seem to be managing a halfway decent public response to this. I've seen bipartisan credit given to Gavin Newsom, Andrew Cuomo, and Larry Hogan and I'm sure others have received it, too. You can be sober and accurate without being hysterical; you can be reassuring without being flippant and dismissive. That Trump, personally, can't seem to pull it off doesn't mean that it can't be done - it just means that Trump is bad at it.

That doesn't make Trump look any better.

“Mr President, what would you say to those people who are scared right now?”

How the heck is that “sensationalist”...???

Oh, I have listened to it all...

Please indicate the part that involves a gotcha...?

No, it wasn't a gotcha question. A good answer would've been, "I understand that you're scared and you have good reason to be scared. But we're working very hard and very quickly on this and the best way to mitigate the risks is to follow the advice of the professionals and undertake the safety precautions they've laid out."

See how easy that is? You don't have to have such low standards for your elected officials.

It's not a gotcha question, it's a softball question where you show your humanity and empathy toward the American public. However, because the current president has the mental attitude of a pre-adolescent child, he takes the question as an attack and "fights back." It's truly sad.

However, when you ask that question to a man that lacks empathy, I guess it could be considered a "gotcha" question.

It's fairly easy to answer the reporter's question. Maybe something like:

"I understand that many of you are scared, whether it's from a health or economic perspective, but we are Americans, and we have the capacity to overcome any obstacle that comes in our path. As a nation, we must work together, even as we keep our distance. It may be a difficult road ahead, but the American spirit will overcome."

That was off the cuff. It didn't take a lot of deep thought to come up with some platitudes which would answer the question and not misrepresent the situation. And it was done without attacking the reporter for asking a pretty basic question.

Are you volunteering for the job?

Nope, I wouldn't see the point of trying for a job I'm not remotely qualified for. I wouldn't vote a con artist with a lifelong record of abject dishonesty into the job either. Fortunately, there are people with the relevant training and experience.

Seriously - if you and I, a couple of rando's off the internet, can pull an answer out of our back sides that easily, why can't the SGOTUS (Stable Genius of the United States)?

We both know the answer to that question, and it may be against forum rules to post it.

That was a great 'non answer'. You should go into politics.

Trump was elected by people that were tired of pretty much the same things.

Q. "How do you know when a lawyer is lying."
A. "When his lips are moving."

Most legislators are lawyers.

Do the math.

They thought lawyers were too dishonest so they elected a guy who developed real estate and hosted a reality show - because property developers and tv personalities are the most honest folks I can think of. Oh, and he ran a sham university.

If Trump voters voted for Trump because they wanted something better, they didn't look too hard to find something better.

What if he cannot honestly provide that reassurance? At this point things look pretty grim. Remember Churchill.

When things look their grimmest, one needs to have hope and faith. Remember Christ.
