“If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain (drought), or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
2 Chronicles 7:13

God would have known very well it was coming. But "knowing" and "warning" are two different things. I don't know of anybody prophetically warning us that the virus was coming before it happened, which means God didn't send us a specific warning even though He knew it was coming.

A list of the worst epidemics can be found here. I'm a bit wary of the figure of 100 million deaths from Spanish Flu (going on the article's estimate) and I think it was less than that. I used to hear around 20 million.

My mother lost a brother to Spanish Flu, way back then in 1919. She was two and he was four. They both got it but she survived. He didn't.

In all cases, God would have known intimately what was going on. We can only speculate on the reasons He allows them to occur, particularly epidemics like the Black Death, which not only hit the population in general, but caused huge problems for the Church, which He claims is His Church.

The range in Wikipedia was "anywhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million", so I'm a bit cynical about the 100 million figure. For years I used to read it was about 20 million.

Spanish flu - Wikipedia

The Spanish flu, also known as the 1918 flu pandemic, was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic. Lasting from January 1918 through December 1920, it infected 500 million people—about a quarter of the world's population at the time. The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history.

Throughout history, I've noticed God does not discriminate. Sending both good harvest and epidemics to countries everywhere regardless of their religious affiliations.

I was watching a documentary on the Spanish flu and one gentleman said that after it was over he went to all his friends house and at each one was told "Let your mother tell you" when he inquired about his friends, he said he knew he lost all his friends to the Spanish flu. :(

The world hasn't experienced that many, has it? The equivalent of the Coronavirus?
SARS a few years ago, but without all of the politicization. Various STDs. The Spanish Flu a hundred years ago. The Bubonic Plague many times. And most Plague epidemics were nasty, the worst killing a third of the population of Europe. We've been there and done that many times. This is just one more in a long long line of epidemics.

Consider this a practice run for the next one, which could be far far worse, a slate-wiper. And that one could already be sitting in the ductwork of your local critical care hospital waiting for just the right person to infect. We already have many superbugs that have no treatment just waiting. Skilled infection control has kept them at bay so far.
