Annihilationism: Does Rev. 20:10 teach that some demons will be tormented forever?

There are Sheol or Hades and Gehenna. Gehenna, or the fire lake is the second death, permanent end. Sheol or Hades is not. And before second death, it seems some people are waiting in Sheol or Hades, which also will be thrown to the fire lake in the end.
…The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works. Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:12-15
Some say hell is actually wrong translation for the fire lake. That is why it is perhaps better to say just that in the end, some are thrown to that lake and the lake burns forever. But by what I know, there is no Biblical support for the idea that one lives or feels eternally anything in the lake. Especially because eternal life is promised for righteous only.

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

You didn't read my post did you? I quoted 3 passages of scripture which show the unrighteous dead speaking, moving etc. Gehenna and hades are two names for the same place. Ge hinnom which means valley of Hinnom is written in the 225 BC LXX and the NT as gehenna and sheol is written as hades.
Jesus is quoted as using the word death 17 times in the NT, if He had meant eternal death in Matt 25:46 that is what He would have said.

And 21% of the time it can mean the cessation of existence. The truth is much of what you list can be understood as the cessation of existence so I don't knw where the idea of "79%" comes from. If death is dead in the end then all those mentions of dead, death, and die count toward cessation of existence and you no longer have "79%"...

Even if you reviewed every verse in the 21% you would not be able to state which ones would be annihilated, that is God's decision.

God gives eternal life as a gift to the saved not to the lost. Nowhere is there any verse that says God gives eternal life to the lost which is what you need in order to keep living in hell. Also. only the saved get to have access to the tree of life and the water of life---not even Adam and Eve could live eternally without the tree of life.

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Gen 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

I don't think we will spend eternity feeding the lost our leftovers from the tree of life to keep them going.

Well you can spend time in flights of fancy wondering HOW it all works when God did not say the hows. But the bible is clear that the lost will spend forever in torment and have no rest day or night forever!

This part of your argument is nonsensical. It is appointed unto man once to die after that the judgement. Everyone, 100%, dies but not everyone experiences "apollumi." So nothing you said changes the 79%. Not being included in the 21% does not mean that person will certainly be annihilated. Even if you reviewed every verse in the 21% you would not be able to state which ones would be annihilated, that is God's decision.

This is not flights of fancy, this is the word of God:

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Gen 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

1Ti 6:15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
1Ti 6:16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

Not one verse says eternal life is given to the wicked.

Rev_2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Rev_22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Rev_22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Joh_4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Rev_21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

In Isaiah 14 there is a long passage about the king of Babylon dying, and according to many the dead know nothing. They are supposedly annihilated, destroyed, gone! God, Himself, speaking, these dead people in שאול/sheol, know something, they move, meet the dead coming to sheol, stir up, raise up, speak and say, etc.
Isa 14:9-11 (KJV)
9)Hell [שאול] from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
10)
All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
11) Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, [
שאול] and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
[ . . . ]
22) For I will rise up against them,
saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD.
In this passage God, himself is speaking, and I see a whole lot of shaking going on, moving, rising up, and speaking in . These dead people seem to know something, about something. We know that verses 11 through 14 describe actual historical events, the death of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babble-on.
Here is another passage where God himself is speaking and people who are dead in sheol, speaking, being ashamed, comforted, etc.

Ezek 32:18-22, 30-31 (KJV)
18) Son of man, [Ezekiel] wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit.
19) Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised.
20)
They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes.
21)
The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell [שאול] with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
22) Asshur is there and all her company: his graves are about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword::[ . . . ]
Eze 32:30-31
(30) There be the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit.
(31) Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord GOD.
Jesus speaking about a dead man in Hades had eyes, was in torment, saw Abraham, “cried and said,” asked for water, begged Abraham, etc.
Luk 16:22-28
(22) And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
(23) And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
(24) And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
(25) But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
(26) And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
(27) Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
(28) For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. I have been researching annihilationism, and I had a question about that. For some background, this article more or less summarizes why I lean in that direction:

(FYI: Though not unique to annihilationism, I'm personally assuming something of a premillenial viewpoint, with a literal future Antichrist.)

My question is about one of the big problem verses for annihilationism. Revelation 20:10 says:

10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

This is on the heels of Revelation 19:20:

And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence[e] had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.
At first this seems straightforward. However, other passages indicates that Jesus/God actually kills the Antichrist. This would cause an apparent contradiction with the verses above regarding the "beast" being tormented forever and ever.

And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. (2 Thess. 2:8)
Which cross-references to Isaiah 11:4:

but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

This is also indicated by the sword that comes out of Jesus' mouth in Revelation 19.

Other verses also seem to indicate that God kills the Antichrist. Daniel 7:11 says:

“I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire.

This is similar to Revelation, albeit with a very noticeable contradiction/difference. In Revelation, the beast is thrown alive into the lake of fire. But here, the beast is killed and burned with fire.

Isaiah 14 also talks about the taunt that will be lifted up against the "king of Babylon." (For reasons I won't go into here, he sounds remarkably like the Antichrist. Since the Antichrist is ruler of a world government at some point, he is definitely leader of Iraq and wherever "mystery babylon" is, at least for some time.) Here is an excerpt from Isaiah 14:

All the kings of the nations lie in glory,
each in his own tomb;[d]
19 but you are cast out, away from your grave,
like a loathed branch,

clothed with the slain, those pierced by the sword,
who go down to the stones of the pit,
like a dead body trampled underfoot.
20 You will not be joined with them in burial,
because you have destroyed your land,
you have slain your people.​

So if the Antichrist is killed, but also tormented forever, then how do we reconcile this apparent contradiction? I propose a possible solution that is not novel, but possible. Revelation 17:8-11 says:

The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come. 9 This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; 10 they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while. 11 As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction.​


Some commentators believe that the "beast" is a demon that embodies the Antichrist, empowering him to heal his mortal wound. See also Revelation 13:3:

One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast.
This is also why the beast is an 8th king, who "belongs to the seven." As a result, the beast is a demon, because he comes up out of the "bottomless pit." But the man whose body he has is not a demon.

Furthermore, it seems that the "evil trinity" has demons associated with each of them.

And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. (Rev. 16:3)
So which is it? Is the beast "killed?" Or is he tortured forever? Or is his demonic counterpart tormented forever, whereas the man is not?Similarly, are demons anreallyinihilated? Or are they tormented forever?

I agree with you about the the false prophet and beast being inhabited by demons. However, this passage only speaks of three. So it wouldn't impact annihilation. However, the key to solving the problem is that the Greek word, aionios, translated forever, doesn't mean forever. It means an age. so, they will be tormented for an age. How long that age is depends of the context. We also know that it's not forever because the Lake of Fire will one day again be made Holy to the Lord.

38 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.
39 And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath.
40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever. (Jer. 31:38-40 KJV)

Lazarus and the rich man is a parable and we've discussed that before. It isn't saying what you believe it does. There is still not one verse that states that God gives eternal life to the wicked. It is a gift to the saved. Eternal life always is stated as a reward to the saved, never as a reward to the wicked. They will be ashes just as Sodom and Gomorrah, which it clearly says is an example of what happens to the wicked. Again---God told Adam and Eve that if they ate of the tree they would die, not burn in hell forever. It is clearly stated the wages of sin is death---not eternal life. And the wicked in Rev are being tormented in front of the all angels and the Lamb---Jesus and all the angels are not going sit around for eternity watching people being tormented. If God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, you think He is going to sit around and watch them being tormented throughout eternity?---You might, I do not. Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden of Eden to prevent them from eating of the tree of life The wicked are not given access to the Tree of Life. We've been through all this several times over, and I've given the verses also. I know what you stand firm on and you know what I stand firm on---I basically don't read your posts anymore, I know what you're going to say, ,you can ignore mine---no need to rehash the same arguments.

That the word "aionios" sometimes refers to things which are not eternal does not change the meaning of the word. That is known as hyperbole such as when Jesus told His followers "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." Luke 14:26. If taken literally that would violate the commandment "Honor your mother and father."
.....In twenty four [24] of the following verses αἰών/aion and αἰώνιος/aionios are defined/described as eternal, everlasting, eternity etc, by pairing or contrasting it with other adjectives or adjectival phrases. In 9 of these verses Jesus defines "aionios" as "eternal." In 10 of these verses Pajl defines "aionios" as "eternal."
I have been posting this study here for a few years it has never been refuted.

Lazarus and the rich man is a parable and we've discussed that before. It isn't saying what you believe it does. There is still not one verse that states that God gives eternal life to the wicked. It is a gift to the saved. Eternal life always is stated as a reward to the saved, never as a reward to the wicked. They will be ashes just as Sodom and Gomorrah, which it clearly says is an example of what happens to the wicked. Again---God told Adam and Eve that if they ate of the tree they would die, not burn in hell forever. It is clearly stated the wages of sin is death---not eternal life. And the wicked in Rev are being tormented in front of the all angels and the Lamb---Jesus and all the angels are not going sit around for eternity watching people being tormented. If God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, you think He is going to sit around and watch them being tormented throughout eternity?---You might, I do not. Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden of Eden to prevent them from eating of the tree of life The wicked are not given access to the Tree of Life. We've been through all this several times over, and I've given the verses also. I know what you stand firm on and you know what I stand firm on---I basically don't read your posts anymore, I know what you're going to say, ,you can ignore mine---no need to rehash the same arguments.

How many times are you going to post this. I've already shown your reasoning is wrong. I'll show another one. You said,

These people are alive. They won't live forever, therefore the statement they have no rest won't last forever, they will die.
No you have not proved anything. Prove that they will die and not live forever. The devil, the beast and the false prophet, who is a human being, are thrown into the lake of fire and tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20;10
Now address the other 23 verses. You might get lucky and actually refute some. But I would not count on it.

It is not a convenience to say Lazarus was a parable---

The Pharisees were there and Jesus only spoke in parables when they were around. He explained His parable to the disciple's only when they were alone if they had not understood it.

Mar_4:34 But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

It was a parable and it doesn't matter how many people take it as literal. It was directed at the Pharisees, they were stubborn, and Jesus had raised a real Lazarus from the dead and they would still not believe.
I wasn't saying for you not to keep repeating, I also have to keep repeating. Just that WE do not have to go ever the same arguments. Different ones, OK.

The discussion has morphed into people, not demons. However I don't see that the issue is that different. 1 Cor 15 24-26 seems to say that powers, authorities, and death will be destroyed. Rev 20:10 seems consistent with that if you think, as I do, that in the end the pit vanishes, having done its work.

While I think 1 Cor 15 teaches that all people will end up
"all in all" that doesn't seem to apply to "powers." I'm not so convinced that demons are fully personal. There is certainly a kind of force to evil that transcends individuals. But I think treating it as a full person is giving it too much credit. But whatever it is, I believe it's destroyed.

If Jesus was directing His words to the Pharisees why does it say ""the Pharisees ...also heard." If Jesus was talking to them of course they heard. Vs. 16:1 and 17:1 both say Jesus was talking to His disciples the Pharisees happened to overhear.
Lazarus and the rich man is not introduced as a parable and Jesus does not explain it later to His disciples. Lazarus does not have the structure of a parable. Parable is from the Greek parabolos, to lay beside. To explain something unknown by comparison with something known. "The kingdom of heaven is like unto..." There is no such comparison in Lazarus and the rich man. The only thing known is that two men lived and died

Nonsense. It does not matter what you say about Lazarus and the rich man. The ECF are the only historical evidence we have of the faith and practice of the early post disciple church. It will take more than hand waving to dismiss the ECF.

Doesn’t Father Abraham presiding over heaven make it pretty clear he’s using a cultural image to make a point? When people refer to arrivinvg bsefore Peter at the pearly gates, they are usually not thinking of a scenario that is actually going to happen just that way.
