Aqaba, Jordan and Eilat, Israel are within sight of each other and are sustained by tourism as Red Sea coral reef snorkeling is popular. Europeans went there in the winter. There was a hotel on the Egyptian shore near them at Taba. It was blown up by Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda drove Christians out of El Arish in the Sinai. Preaching Christianity to Jews is illegal in Israel.

I do not know of any farms sustained with desalinated irrigation water. The areas south of Beersheva are not good for tree farms. There is limited desert scrub vegetation in erosion galleys. It is not forest. The Dead Sea has some tourist hotels, mud treatments and swimming in the Dead Sea. They have large scale evaporation ponds to extract salts including potassium chloride - potash. There is phosphate mining in the Negev.

Tampa gets 10% of their water from desalination. Saudi Arabia had to switch to desalination years ago as they depleted their groundwater resources by growing crops in the desert. Part of my county used recycled sewage for lawn and golf course irrigation during the dry season. An Israeli company was building a desalination plant in California. Israel used rooftop solar water heaters to preheat domestic water. The engineers figured it reduced energy costs and is profitable. They are on flat top roofs all over Israel.

I'm really glad you reminded me of this.

Israeli company launches in California Western Hemisphere's largest desalination plant

The IDE facility will produce some 190 million liters of water daily for the residents of southern California.

A lot of ice has been melting off the land based Greenland Ice Sheet and the world glaciers so why have we seen so little rise in ocean levels?

Up until now the GROWTH of the Antarctic ice sheet has balanced things out.

The rate of ice sheet growth though on Antarctica seems to be slowing down.

NASA Study: Mass Gains of Antarctic Ice Sheet Greater than Losses

So what should we do?

I think that we should forget about the silly Carbon Tax idea. We Canadians produce less than two percent of Global Atmospheric Greenhouse Gas Emissions anyway so the logic of why we should burden our businesses and taxpayers with billions and tens of billions in taxes for something that we cannot do much about is terribly illogical.

There is a better way though!
That article is five years ago - way out of date. The Antarctic ice has been melting and is considerably smaller since then.

Mass melting of Antarctic ice sheet led to three metre sea level rise 120,000 years ago
