Right back at'cha, Quentin! Keep serving Jesus, brother. He has amazing things ahead for you and your future! He's preparing you for all He has ahead, so study hard and allow Him to mold you into who He wants you to be, both now and in the future.

So here is my dilemma:
I am unemployed, but am in college right now. My father and mother think I need a job to help cover expenses. However my fear is if I get employed, I will not be able to manage work and school. How can I convince them that my plan of being unemployed at this time is beneficial for me until my college is done?

Call me I'm Skype and let me talk to your parents. I'll let them see the bags under my eyes and how misrable I am from effectivally working two full-time jobs and a part time one every week.

I was a custodian at college for a time. I had plenty of time on my hands to study.

Working while in college provides two great things: money and a resume building notion that you worked while in college, which is a good thing. BUT, IMHO it is more important to keep the grades as high as possible then making extra money. I have two college degrees and one post graduate, i worked through most of my degrees and it showed my now employer that i can manage my time effectively. If the course work is too much, cut it back...if it is just right, see if you can find a part time gig in the industry you are studying. Finding a job outside your industry is just spinning your wheels, it is WAY MORE beneficial to work within your industry, even if is 5 -10 hours a week...any experience is good experience and will put you ahead of the curve

How about compromising with your parents by getting a part-time job with about 20 hours a week? I know I worked too many hours a week when I went to school full-time and was always a step behind the professors.

I am on my own in my own apartment and Social Security Disability Income pays my full rent here.

If you dont live with your parents, why do you feel the need to convince them of anything?

Well my daughter is on the rowing team, works at the front desk of her dorm and is doing her internship for kinesiology. Full plate! But she wants her own money. I think your parents want you to earn your own money now because it is the next step to being a responsible adult. Being in college is really no reason to disobey them.
Blessings

Just due to the stress of their constant reminders of money issues....

My wife didn't have to but, she worked part time while attending college.

For many of my younger years while working full time for the City Monday through Friday I had a moving and tree trimming business. Yes, at times I worked six or seven days a week.

Welcome to the world of work
which does pay off very well

So you live on your own, and they want you to get a job to help them out with their living situation? Or are they helping you financially, in some way, and desired that you start helping yourself more, so they can stop supporting you?

Compromise. Work part time and contribute. Honor you mother and father. Sounds like they feel you need to contribute, so do, or move.

I strongly encourage you to work at least 10 hours a week to show good faith to your parents and build up good work-related habits that your future employers will look for.

You can find the time for work if you study efficiently and limit your social life.

What are you majoring in? For me, my degree was very difficult to obtain. The overwhelming majority failed. If your majoring in something that isn’t really that difficult, you probably could and should help out. That probably doesn’t sound very good as I read it. However I really believe that is what is best. Perhaps learning how to juggle work and school and social life will help you grow. In my case I went into the navy after my first semester. While in service I made as much rank as possible and aside from working long tough hours I went to school. Please at least pray about this advice and seek God’s Will. I had some pretty lofty titles through my career. I’ve found that a fair number of people would be better off obtaining a skill. A great deal of debt can easily be created attending a university. May Christ lead you and guide you in your decision.

When you're working, you'll need to constantly upgrade your skills anyway. Might as well get used to it now when your brain is still able to adapt.

I am majoring in Creative Writing, but I just got a job interview at Best Buy this thursday for my local geek squad as a high-up IT job. It will definately pay all my bills!

When I was younger I started at college while living at home with just my dad. My two older brothers had both gone to university; one was there and one had left uni and moved out by that point. I had a Saturday job which provided me with some money although I didnt have to pay towards the cost of the home at that point. As I earned so little I was "allowed" to keep it for myself. My dad put more and more pressure on me to get a job and made it very clear that if I wanted to go to university he would not allow me to continue living at home and I would have to fend for myself all the time. After a few months of this I left college and got a job.

Not being able to go to university and get a degree is something that has affected my whole life. Time after time I have been turned down for jobs for people who do have a degree. I was also told a lot over the years that I was not given promotions as the manager had pressure on then to hire a woman or minority for diversity reasons, but often having a degree was given as a reason for hiring them. I am now approaching 50 and this is something that still has a massive affect on my life. With hindsight, I wish I had just moved out and fended for myself while going to university. I will however add for clarity of the situation that my dad was a verbally and psychologically abusive man at that point but had stopped being violently abusive by then as he was a coward who would only pick on someone a lot smaller than himself. Also why my mum had left as she couldnt cope with him.

My advice is that if you can stay at college do so at all costs. You will reap the benefits in years to come. A bit of hardship now having to work and study will be worth it if thats what you have to do. Added to the fact that you have the degree, when you have job interviews being able to say you had to work your way through college will show a commitment and ability to work that will almost certainly give you a big advantage over the competition. Whether that is working some hours every week or full time in the college holidays is something you might be able to agree with your parents.

You could always try working part time while going to college to test the waters. I did work study while going to college, and the part time hours weren't too bad going to school full time. If you decide to just go to school without working, I just suggest keeping a routine and keeping some recreational time too, to not get into depression. It can be tough, especially college online. And pray, pray, pray! Keep in a good church.

Can you go to school part-time? I work a full time job, practice kung fu and do other activities, and I go to school part-time with a 3.67 GPA.
