Friends,

I have long wondered about the directives in the NT to "Put on....

Put on the whole armour of God.

Put on peace that comes from the good news

Put on a heart of compassion

Could it be that these are faith actions.

Like taking the bread and the wine - as a faith action we partake of His body and blood.

Like kneeling before the Cross and leaving ones burdens there.

In all these cases do we not realise a spiritual reality by faith ???

If this is the case then should we not by faith put on the helmet of salvation to establish its presence as a spiritual reality?

Likewise the belt of truth etc.

I have never felt comfortable about the attempts made to describe what the armour of God means - what I do do is PUT IT ON when in a battle.

There is however a danger of crossing over into 'magic' unless we are under His directive to so act.

Comments greatly appreciated.

The commands to put on, are based upon us knowing who we are In Christ and acting in the obedience of faith to which we are called to.
rom1:
5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ

rom16:
24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

T694 - Do you then consider this action to be a one time event?
No, I consider it to be more of a Romans 12:2, "renewing your mind" type of process

It is daily. We are in spiritual warfare, and it is every day. This is about our spiritual walks with Christ, too, which is daily. Putting these on daily is action. The world, Satan, other people lie to us, even the voices inside our own heads from our pasts or whatever lie to us regularly, so every day we have to fight off those lies with the truth. Every day we must be ready to share the gospel of our salvation which brings us into peace with God. Every day we must take up the Word of God and apply it to our lives and use it to fight off Satan's evil schemes against us. Every day we must walk in faith and not in fear, and we must put on faith and resist doubt. These are things we must put into practice daily as part of our walks of faith in the Spirit of God and in order to fight off Satan's evil schemes against us, and he doesn't take a vacation. And, praying for one another is important that we do daily, too.

A simple declaration daily is my take on it. I declare Lord Jesus to be my helmet of salvation, He is my Breastplate of Righteousness, He is my belt of Truth and so on. We are told to put on Christ, so it is covered by that instruction also. Nothing in the Christian life is automatic. It is not hard, but it still needs to be done. Each day is complete in itself (that is a really interesting study) so I refresh the armour daily.

You put on the armour of God by living & growing in Christ which builds character and with it's attributes are the armour of God. The only way we can be an effective Christian is to live in the spirit as it is the power of God who will give you the strength to overcome your adversaries.

**************************************************
I copied & pasted this from GotQuestions.org

Question: "What is the full armor of God?"

Answer:
The phrase “full armor of God” comes from Ephesians 6:13-17: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Ephesians 6:12 clearly indicates that the conflict with Satan is spiritual, and therefore no tangible weapons can be effectively employed against him and his minions. We are not given a list of specific tactics Satan will use. However, the passage is quite clear that when we follow all the instructions faithfully, we will be able to stand, and we will have victory regardless of Satan’s strategy.

The first element of our armor is truth (verse 14). This is easy to understand, since Satan is said to be the “father of lies” (John 8:44). Deception is high on the list of things God considers to be an abomination. A “lying tongue” is one of the things He describes as “detestable to Him” (Proverbs 6:16-17). We are therefore exhorted to put on truth for our own sanctification and deliverance, as well as for the benefit of those to whom we witness.

Also in verse 14, we are told to put on the breastplate of righteousness. A breastplate shielded a warrior’s vital organs from blows that would otherwise be fatal. This righteousness is not works of righteousness done by men. Rather, this is the righteousness of Christ, imputed by God and received by faith, which guards our hearts against the accusations and charges of Satan and secures our innermost being from his attacks.

Verse 15 speaks of the preparation of the feet for spiritual conflict. In warfare, sometimes an enemy places dangerous obstacles in the path of advancing soldiers. The idea of the preparation of the gospel of peace as footwear suggests what we need to advance into Satan’s territory, aware that there will be traps, with the message of grace so essential to winning souls to Christ. Satan has many obstacles placed in the path to halt the propagation of the gospel.

The shield of faith spoken of in verse 16 makes Satan’s sowing of doubt about the faithfulness of God and His Word ineffective. Our faith—of which Christ is “the author and perfecter” (Hebrews 12:2)— is like a golden shield, precious, solid, and substantial.

The helmet of salvation in verse 17 is protection for the head, keeping viable a critical part of the body. We could say that our way of thinking needs preservation. The head is the seat of the mind, which, when it has laid hold of the sure gospel hope of eternal life, will not receive false doctrine or give way to Satan’s temptations. The unsaved person has no hope of warding off the blows of false doctrine because he is without the helmet of salvation and his mind is incapable of discerning between spiritual truth and spiritual deception.

Verse 17 interprets itself as to the meaning of the sword of the Spirit—it is the Word of God. While all the other pieces of spiritual armor are defensive in nature, the sword of the Spirit is the only offensive weapon in the armor of God. It speaks of the holiness and power of the Word of God. A greater spiritual weapon is not conceivable. In Jesus’ temptations in the desert, the Word of God was always His overpowering response to Satan. What a blessing that the same Word is available to us!

In verse 18, we are told to pray in the Spirit (that is, with the mind of Christ, with His heart and His priorities) in addition to wearing the full armor of God. We cannot neglect prayer, as it is the means by which we draw spiritual strength from God. Without prayer, without reliance upon God, our efforts at spiritual warfare are empty and futile. The full armor of God—truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer—are the tools God has given us, through which we can be spiritually victorious, overcoming Satan’s attacks and temptations.

Hope this has edified you?

It is more than a daily putting on (does it slip off during sleep?). It is moment by moment thing - walking in it, like the way we are instructed to feed on Him by faith, not a partaking of a weekly communiion, but also a moment by moment feeding, and drinking of His blood.

If the armour is down then we quickly fall back into depending on our flesh instead of walking in the Spirit. This will quickly cause us to sin.

It is not just about sin. It is dependance on even our religious serving flesh that kills the Spirit within. Everything must be from Him and in Him.

I think the Greek reads, having put it on, keep it on, that is, keep believing that it has been put on and that we are saved from sin.

If we are still sinning, we are still under the juristriction of satan's kingdom.

The full armor of God that Christians are called to put on comprises of the Belt of Truth (Ephesians 6:14), the Breastplate of Righteousness (Ephesians 6:14), the Gospel of Peace (Ephesians 6:15), the Shield of Faith (Ephesians 6:16), the Helmet of Salvation (Ephesians 6:17), and the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17).

Everything needed to fight off the enemy.

Eph 6:10 says, "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might."
Strong = (greek) Endunamao - explosive power being deposited in a container or vessel
so we could read verse 10: "Be empowered and made strong by the explosive strength, ability and power of God"

So how are we strong in the Lord and empowered by Him? By putting on His armor

Eph 6:11, 13 & 14 all tell us to "stand"
Stand = (greek) Histemi - to uphold and sustain the authority or force of anything

How do we uphold authority? By wearing His armor.
How do we give up authority? By not wearing His armor.

We wrestle against the wiles of the enemy. The armor empowers us and enables us to stand in His authority.

  • When the enemy comes with doubt we can STAND in our identity, because of the helmet of salvation
  • When the enemy comes with shame & condemnation we can STAND in our spiritual position, because of the breastplate of (His) righteousness.
  • When the enemy comes to lie and deceive we can STAND in the truth, because of the belt of truth
  • When the enemy comes with worry & anxiety we can STAND on the good news, because are shoes are shod with the gospel of peace
  • Whatever the enemy throws our way we can STAND and block with the shield of faith
  • When we are wearing His armor we can declare His Word boldly and our sword will be EMPOWERED with His might to cut the cords of the wicked

OK now a question remains.

If we have the attributes built into our character relating to the parts of the armour, why do we still have a need to 'put on' ???
We are to move forward in faith and love regardless of the adversity, You'll notice there is no armour behind. Retreat is not an option.

Because they are not built into our character, they belong to Christ and His righteousness.
