Iran’s deputy health minister was drenched in sweat at the press conference on Monday where he vehemently denied Tehran was covering up the extent of the coronavirus outbreak. He kept wiping his brow with his handkerchief and was in visible distress as he said quarantines were a “Stone Age” way to address the problem, and Iran doesn’t need them. Then, sure enough, that night he tested positive for the virus himself and put himself in quarantine.

The irony of Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi’s case would be funny almost, were Iran’s conspicuous bungling of the coronavirus threat not a menace to the whole region and, indeed, to the world.

As The Daily Beast’s partner publication, IranWire, revealed in an exclusive report Thursday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has tried to address the epidemic by telling doctors to shut up about it, much as Chinese authorities in Wuhan did, disastrously, when the disease was just starting to spread last December.

Iran Can’t Hide Its Coronavirus Explosion, But It’s Trying Hard—and Putting the World in Danger

Governments always down play these things. We heard on news this morning that supposedly there has been 600 cases of in house quarantine right here in my state. Nothing on national news about that one. Also we heard about a possible vaccine that's been sent out for testing from a Cambridge Ma. lab. Ya know, I believe about 40% of what any news outlet broadcasts lol ! So who knows if any of this stuff is even true.

Just another way to pile on to Iran and thrust us into another conflict. Maybe its time to leave Iran alone.

Iran was one of the first countries to sign on to the non-proliferation treaty. All of this talk about them wanting to develop nukes is just leftover nonsense from 1979's hostage crisis, a crisis that our policy caused.

Iran is surrounded by US military bases. They pose zero threat to us given our might and force. They don't want nukes and they don't have any real use for them even if they did develop them.

We've been meddling in Iran's affairs since the 50s. We installed the Shah after our CIA bombed Mosques and then blamed this on the recently elected President. All of that was revealed when the students took over the Embassy and discovered the details of 'Operation Ajax' under the Eisenhower administration.

The Neocons have been promoting our saintliness in our relationship with Iran as if their response to our meddling was purely unilateral and with no valid motive. It's fantasy, just as it is fantasy that Japan attacked us at Pearl Harbor for no reason.

You are leaving out quite of bit of history since then.

I have to ask...How did the virus get to Iran from China? Perhaps the Chinese nuclear physicists helping them on their non-existent nuclear program?

A vaccine, even if just developed, will take at least six months of trials and production before it can be used. And even that would mean cutting many corners needed for safe vaccines. And then vaccines would first be allocated to those who need them most. Don't expect a vaccine you can get for at least a year.

I read that in the best possible circumstance where everything goes perfect, it's18 months. Then figure out production and distribution. Plus it mutates like the flu. So, likely another endemic flu-like thing that kills people every season.

It's going to be, I fear, a permanent feature going forward. Not nearly as bad as Ebola by any means, but very infectious and more fatal than the Influenza. The best we can hope is to slow it's spread until the vaccines come on board. It's already way too big to stop. China had the chance but they were too busy condemning the guy who raised the alarm to actually contain it. Coming to a theater/mall/grocery store/workplace/church near you.

Nice avoidance. I said nothing like this. The story that Iran is endangering the world by its minimizing of the situation is to pile on. Trump also says that the situation is overblown. Is he endangering the world?

There have been corona viruses known since at least the 60s. This isn't a new thing. It was already a permanent feature.

Wrong direction. From China to Iran. Iran didn't export it to China. They have a nuclear program and have had one since the 70s. It is used for energy production and they've never been found to be making bombs and have consistently stated they don't want to make bombs.

Israel on the other hand has never signed on to the treaty and has over 200 nukes while everyone pretends that they don't and that this its OK if they did (wink wink).

All of this propaganda against Iran is designed to sway popular opinion towards a war with Iran.

War with Iran now in the face of this virus outbreak would be too stupid imho.

Agree but the neocons have been trying to get us on board since the mid 90s. And of course you have many pundits since 1979 that have wanted us to either nuke or invade Iran.

During the hostage crisis on all of the talk radio shows there was a very popular song based on the Beach Boy's "Barbara Ann" named "Bomb Iran." Thankfully it wasn't so influential that we followed through.

Yeah I remember John McCain singing that back in 2008.
