Abstract

Political conservatism has been characterized by resistance to change and acceptance of inequality, with liberalism characterized by the polar opposite of these values. Political attitudes are heritable and may be influenced by basic personality traits. In previous research, conservatism (vs. liberalism) has been associated positively with Conscientiousness and negatively with Openness-Intellect, consistent with the association of conservatism with resistance to change. Less clear, however, are the personality traits relating to egalitarianism. In two studies, using a personality model that divides each of the Big Five into two aspects, the present research found that one aspect of Agreeableness (Compassion) was associated with liberalism and egalitarianism, whereas the other (Politeness) was associated with conservatism and traditionalism. In addition, conservatism and moral traditionalism were positively associated with the Orderliness aspect of Conscientiousness and negatively with Openness-Intellect. These findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of personality’s relation to political attitudes and values.

Interesting idea. So it suggests that one's approach to conscience should be different for liberals and conservatives.

Emphasize equity and fairness with conservatives. Emphasize compassion and morality with liberals.

For example, if you want to convince people that women should be paid the same as men...

"If a woman is doing the same job as a man, fairness demands that she be paid the same wage."

"For too long, women have been short-changed when it comes to wages. They have to make ends meet too, and they should be paid the same money as men for the same work."

The first would presumably be more persuasive to a conservative, and the second perhaps more persuasive to a liberal.

This must be from someone with no marketing background. There are 7 known types of personality and messages can be crafted for each.

Actually, there are sixteen known types:
Keirsey Temperament Assessment

But politically, there are two basic outlooks that matter.

In many other things, there are 16 that matter.

And apparently, in marketing, there are 7 that matter.

From the paper:
"Although the term bleeding-heart liberal is often used pejoratively, the current findings suggest that liberals do indeed tend to have higher levels of compassion. These higher levels of compassion likely contribute to the liberal’s preference for fairness and equality. In contrast, the term compassionate conservative may be something of an oxymoron. It is true that individuals with a more balanced personality profile may endorse both conservative and liberal values, but conservatism as a political orientation appears to be negatively associated with compassion. This does not mean there are no compassionate conservatives, but it suggests that the extent to which conservatives are compassionate may reflect the extent to which they possess the underlying motivation driving the liberal value of egalitarianism."

Many qualities can become grotesque if taken to the extreme. Orderliness and politeness are useful and agreeable, but in the world of someone like Trump, it’s fine to sexually assault a woman, but ‘wrong’ for that woman to make it public, it’s ok to shoot refugees, but ‘nasty’ and ‘mean’ to reveal he wanted to do that in the press. At the other extreme you have the kind of free for all, anything goes morality that conservatives most fear.

Yep. It's hardly a new idea that Trump's biggest flaw is excess...

Yes, that's really Trump's apartment, not the boudoir of some 18th century rococo despot.

The first would presumably be more persuasive to a conservative, and the second perhaps more persuasive to a liberal.

I agree that would be the case. Telling people things in a way they do not relate to will not do much to convince then of anything. I see a Christian arguing something with atheist by quoting the Bible to the atheist and I just shake my head. I see people attempting to use politically partisan opinion pieces to try to convince those of the opposite view to abandon their POV. More important then that though is that if one wishes to convince someone of something the worst thing to do is to begin by insulting them in some way. Implying or outright saying that a Trump supporter or a Bernie supporter are stupid or immoral for being a Trump or Bernie supporters will hardly make them change their mind.

In the above examples, I would not be interested in the emotional argument about past short changing. Nor in the part about having to make ends meet. We all have to do the latter and the former is in the past and cannot be changed or repaired by anything I do now. I would agree with the basic idea in both that one should be paid fairly for the work one does. Nothing else should be taken into account. One's sex or one's ethnicity or one's sexual orientation or one's political views ought not to enter into the equation.

Per the OP, I think conservatives are generally not cold-hearted, but merely think of decency in terms of equity or fairness, rather than in terms of compassion.

And it sometimes works out well. If there's a major disaster, with lots of casualties, you want a site director who thinks in terms of "save the most people we can" in triage, rather than someone who is feeling the pain of every injured person.

That pretty much is the way I think, as well, which is why I'm not as good a fit for liberalism as I might otherwise be.

But both arguments are valid ones. Past injustice does matter, and compassion is essential in humans, although I don't find it as compelling an argument as simple equity.

I don't think modern conservatives lack compassion. Nor do I think modern liberals are only fueled by compassion. I think it is more complex than that. Part of the misunderstanding between the two sides comes from what they think the compassionate thing to do would be. There is also the difference in who they have the most compassion for. Some of the most ill conceived arguments stem from the mistaken assumption that the people in the opposing camp perceive things as one perceives them but choose to advocate for the malevolent rather than the benevolent for purely selfish reasons.

I found Keirsey's PLEASE UNDERSTAND ME II helpful, especially in understanding and accepting the other people in my life.

It was immensely helpful to me; I retired from a first career to become a science teacher. And it really helped me to understand how to present material.

Every year, I'd have students take the inventory, telling them that they didn't have to share it with anyone, but to use it to understand how they could best learn. One student told me that she (an INTP, which is one of the less common types) had thought she was different from everyone else, and no one could understand her. She was relieved to know that she wasn't alone.

I told her that she'd find a lot more like her in college. Interestingly, she was also a lefty; for whatever reason, there are far more lefties and INTPs in advanced placement classes than chance would predict.

The problem is that most teachers are ENFJs, and their style is "you can't build a house before you lay the foundation." So step by step, outlining the subject in a very orderly fashion. And while most kids respond well to that approach, a few don't.

NTs are best served by going to the back of the chapter, reading the summary to get the big picture, and then going back to pick up the details. My plan was to have each kid realize his own learning style, and approach the assignments accordingly.

ESFPs like a narrative, with personalities to learn...
"Galileo was a really smart guy, and like to remind everyone. So he made a lot of enemies, and not so many friends, even though he was usually right. When Kepler, who was also really smart, but poor, asked to borrow a telescope, Galileo was pretty rude to him. Then he made the mistake of insulting the Pope, who had, up to that time, been protecting him."

I was pretty popular, although a principal once said she couldn't understand how I could stand all the disorder. We had centers, and different things were going on at different tables.
