A law have been proposed in Alabama that would require all men to get a vasectomy after they turn 50 or after the birth of their third child, whichever comes first.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Rolanda Hollis, said the measure gives perspective to reproductive health laws, including the state's contested abortion ban.

“It always takes two to tango," she said. “We can’t put all the responsibility on women. Men need to be responsible also.”

So, should this be made law?

Alabama bill would force men to get vasectomy at 50

NO. Requiring a medical procedure on all men?

It is punishment for being born male.

Maybe we should have vasectomies for all blacks? Or all Hispanics? How would that fly???????

Why would you go to racism when this is clearly about gender?

Gender would equate to something like, all women who have had three children have to get a tubal ligation.

No, it should not be a law.

It's a protest bill never intended to be passed as it is written. Politicians do this sometimes to make a point. The member proposing it is making a point, she does not expect it to go anywhere and knows it would never pass.

Discrimination is discrimination; beit gender race religion or accent.

And yeah - your example works too.

Do you remember legal forced sterilizations of "lunatics?"

Correct, which is undoubtedly why the bill's sponsor said "the measure gives perspective to reproductive health laws, including the state's contested abortion ban."

However, on rare occasions laws such as this, written to be a protest bill, do pass. The prohibition on sex discrimination was added to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by Representative Howard Smith, a powerful Virginia Democrat, because he thought no one would vote in favor of a bill that offered Civil rights protection to women. He was wrong.

It's a protest bill and people are falling for it. Her point is that you can't tell women what to do with their bodies and health care, and so she puts out a bill that tells men what to do with their bodies and health care. Now when everyone objects that you can't tell men what to do with their bodies like that, she thinks she's made her point: so therefore don't tell women what to do about abortion, QED. If you object to her bill on it's face she thinks she's won an argument.

So it is a bill based upon a Strawman.

If she is doing it as a red herring with no intent or true purpose then she ought to find something useful to do with her time.

If she intended to be useful she would never have entered the political arena.

I don't remember it but I've read about it.

Many years ago I met an elderly woman from Austria. She said when she was a teenager her mother took her to a doctor/surgeon and he gave her a hysterectomy because her mother asked him to. She was married for over 40 years and was sad they had no children.

State legislators do such things all the time. How many states have official state beverages, state birds, state dogs, state flowers and state trees? Pennsylvania have an state electric locomotive (PRR GG-1) and Kentucky has an official state instrument (Appalachian dulcimer). You don't think that is a waste of time?

Everything but the dulcimer. I happen to be fond of traditional music.

I have two of them. I’m not very good yet but I’m getting better. But I don’t know that a state legislature should take the time to make it the official state instrument. Sometimes the debates over an official this or that can take days.

I would prefer they spent most of their time on that sort of thing as the other things they do tend to be a net negative for the citizens. As long as they are doing busy work they are not passing ridiculous laws.
