Christians should be hated for the same reasons that Christ was hated

Jesus is the light that reveals the darkness within us. Some prefer the darkness and do not want their sinful nature revealed and some turn to Christ for help to deliver them from the darkness so they can serve God.

More often than not Christians are hated for acting like Pharisees. Jesus ate and drank with sinners and tax collectors. When he condemned acts it was acts of those claiming to be good members of his religion. In many ways quite the opposite of how many Christians act.

"Christians" come in all shapes and sizes and qualities. Most, being sinners unlike the founder of the religion, truly are not as admirable as he was.

(Incidentally, it looks to me as though the first three replies to the OP, mine included, are saying much the same thing, but in different ways. I like that.)

He told the truth, and the truth showed they would be condemned to hell if they didn't straighten out their act. Since that always looming truth/constant reminder would cramp their lifestyle as well as constantly make them uneasy if they continued to live in sin (which they intended to do), they hated the message he brought as well as the messenger. IOW, he turned everything upside down, and gave them constant concern/fear about living how they chose to live. The terms "threat" and "buzz kill" also come to mind.

One aspect of that, as long as people see Christ as the non threatening, nothing but peace and love kind of guy, that people sometimes do, they love him. But when Christians push the demands the true Christ makes, they will sometimes hate them, simply because they don't like that part, and would rather have remained in their chosen ignorance because it was easier.

I also realize some Christians are fanatical, and either go way to far over the line, or are sincere but just don't handle things like they should, or are complete nut cases, and everything in between. A pretty good reason to hate the Christian. Of course we have to understand, people who do those things to the point they disobey God may not actually be Christians at all. They are instead posers, and for a multitude of selfish reasons

On a side note, non Christians tend to use the fanatics as their proof "all" or most of Christianity is bad, when the truth of the matter often is, people that act badly, or as non Christians are not Christians at all, making their claims completely unfair/wrong.

And it's a shame some choose to use some most likely non Christians pretending to be Christian as means to demean Christians as a whole.

In my view, this is something that reckless non Christians choose to do because it's convenient to pretend their reasons for not wanting to be Christians, are because Christians are mostly bad, when the truth of the matter is, if one is true Christians they are good as gold, meaning the argument is with non Christians. It's a delusion non christians create for themselves as excuse to continue to live as they do.... "Christians are bad, I don't want to be like them, so it's better to remain my sinning self."

Non Christians that pretend to be Christians are bad, true Christians, by the very nature of how Christianity is defined are not bad.

You left out that Christ throughout his career also condemned the acts of non Christians sinners, to the max, not just so called Christians, or hypocrites. Come to think of it, I don't know any Christian who would not eat with non Christians. Not to be confused with not partying with them, or doing as they do.

Sorry to say, these things seem to get all twisted up somewhere along the line, but I suppose that's by design, even if some don't see they are twisting things.

Tell someone who believes in prosperity doctrine that material wealth is not a sign of a man's righteousness (as Jesus did) and that man cannot serve God and money (as Jesus did) and you'll see some of why people hated Jesus.


Tell someone who knows they are a sinner beyond redemption that they can be forgiven for their sins and you'll see some of why He was loved..

It just happens, the hatred. I don't do anything I know of, I certainly do not separate myself from any person for any reason and I don't "preach". I'm thinking about workplaces here, but it happens with family too.
I've had coworkers lay into me for a half hour or more about Christianity and their hatred of it, when I've never even shared with them that I am a Christian.
I've also had complete strangers start conversations with me that end with tears and hugs.
I think they must see a difference in me that I don't perceive myself.

I think that Jesus was hated because he told people the truth that they didn't want to hear. For instance the rich young ruler was given an answer from Jesus that he didn't want, so he turned away from Jesus. On many occasions Jesus called out the Pharisees on being hypocrites for the way that they acted.

A lot of Christians have different views and opinions on things like abortion, same-sex marriage, etc. Which can cause people to hate us. But then Christians can be hated for supporting or not supporting certain issues/people.
Another thing is that people can perceive God and Jesus in the way they want them to be. Not so much as they truly are. So looking from that perspective someone can hate Christians for being Christlike, but then love Jesus because in their head they've made him out to be something he isn't.

Care to cite a half dozen of those numerous times. The few I can recall involve someone claiming to be righteous. I do not recall any where it was an ordinary non Jew simply failing to keep the Jewish law.

Numerous times what? My post was long enough and because I don't find that exact wording in my post, I should probably ask which part you are referring too, but before you answer, are you saying I'm wrong?

Jesus condemning the acts of non-Christians. Assuming of course you just slipped and were not grossly disingenuous. Of course his condemnation of the religious Jews of his time or for that matter anyone else would be of non-Christians as there were no Christians yet.
