20Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.

Why is this allowed? If the slave recovers from being beaten then the attacker wont be punished?

Under the old law corporal punishment was allowed against servants. That particular law is not meant to allow corporal punishment but to restrain the master from being overly harsh.

The only thing my brain can come up with is that if a slave sold himself into slavery and got lazy and decided not to work i might see how one might give him a few whacks to get him to work since he is supposed to work and is choosing not to. But then anyone im debating might just say "well why didnt he just fire him"
