Mostly that the writers were basing it on witness's recollections. Historical accuracy wasn't important to them.

Nonsense, both Luke and Paul claim to either be eyewitneses or to have talked to eyewitneses.The gospel writers were second or even third generation Christians. In talking of the birth of Jesus that would move it up to third or fourth generation. This places the birth well into the "legendary" category.
