Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

(Hebrews 13:2)

Replacing a Talent

Discussing here one form of entertainment that may be largely secular, but don’t count on it not massively affect Christian entertainment as well.

The current status of this talent for the world of entertainment would be hard for this writer to ascertain. As for here in the US, and what mindset the current flock of mega-successful talent wishes to set the example of, the mystery of the strength of portrayals and entertaining fiction that once held the minds of a populace in the palm of their hand as one, is now on the verge of diminishing that strength due to their inability to resist political drivel and remove the mystery from our eyes.

Now maybe that’s a good thing, but not for the appreciation for the industry at large, and how close to home might that reach?

All thoughts welcome.

The worth of entertainment is questionable. Such a lot of clutter to fill the mind and stop serious and independent thought. Mustn't let boredom set in, so the entertainment industry ploughs out even more distractions. Thrills and spills, and a lowering of standards, especially vacuous fillers of never ending quiz shows.
It seems to have crept into the Churches, where there is a compulsion to entertain with videos on the overheads, lots of visuals, and a gradual moving away from prayer and worship.

Bingo!, , No pun intended, but for your mammoth closing thought.

Ever since being introduced to what it might mean for us over that alarming verse, ,

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,

2 Thessalonians 2:3

Especially in light of the insight of many of the big-name teachings being circulated, that this “falling away” was being suggested as the removal of the Holy Spirit so that man of sin would rise. I have never heard a considerable refuting of this, but only the slow building upon it as you have for me here as well as how a few verses hence it states,

He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.

2 Thessalonians 2:7,8

This insight has been alarming teachers for decades, even confident, in light of the times that they themselves would not die, till they affirmed before each other “There he is, there is that man of sin!”

Now this was forty years ago when I first heard of that revelation being taught and those teachers are now either aged or have passed away. So, their capitalizing prophesies have failed, but I wouldn’t count on their insight failing. Just look at the moral corruption taking over within so many denominations. Some of this is absolutely appalling, disgusting what is being welcomed to scatter the flock’s wellbeing.

Thank God the Holy Spirit closed such alarm soo softly,

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.

2 Thessalonians 2:16,17

Ever wonder just how far we can exhibit Christian liberty before we excuse ourselves from God's will?

What of Christian Rock? Just read an update of one stand-out band that emerged back in the eighties called, Stryper. I haven't paid any attention to this group since their first debut album was released, but it seems they are committed to their original mantra,

“Why should the devil have all the good music?”

My Pastor and I had a quick discussion over this last week, which I could sense him being somewhat unsettled, though we agreed, songs like “Jesus is just all right with me!” isn’t rooted in Christianity.

For the overall christian rock question, yes, if the fundamental message of the cross was found to be missing, it would amount to an unjust profit from His glory. That much I would also agree. But what if they did manage to supply that need, would that suffice?

I honestly don't see that return of capitol happening to supply what the group needs today, that is, without going fully secular. Today, you can have a nationwide following as a secular rock group and find yourself in a bleak financial rut. I know of one personally!

Yes! I remember Stryper, my daughter's favourite Christian band. Thank you for the link, I will forward it to her. (Their music was Too loud for me) :)

I somehow missed when they toured close to home. But, I must admit ‘musicalpilgrim’, after all these years of contemplating this, it still catches me as being a bit of a mystery, for as we know the Lord’s call,

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might”, , “whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”

(Ecclesiastes 9:10, 1 Corinthians 10:31)

And just as the article so strongly eludes to and my lingering question finds unanswered, is it forbidden that these are incompatible with each other as Christian musicians?

When I read about the gospel account of the wedding feast at Cana, first and foremost it teaches how we can rely on Jesus to meet all of our everyday needs. They had run out of wine, which was an awkward and embarrassing situation for the stewards at the feast. Jesus told his disciples to fill up 6 jugs of water, to scoop out some of the water and take it to the man in charge of the wedding. We know the miracle that happened - Jesus turned the water into wine. Normally the steward would put out the best wine first and he was therefore amazed at the quality of the wine that was served.

There is another lesson that can be learned in this account, one that is often overlooked, and that is Jesus is interested in sharing with us our life experiences. He is not just with us in time of sorrow, but also during time of great joy. He is not the bystander looking on us with disapproval, but is interested in every detail of our lives. When we celebrate an achievement or a significant life event, Jesus choses to celebrate with us. At the wedding feast, food and wine was shared, there was probably music, laughter, and stories shared. Jesus wanted to share in their happiness. He did not take anything away from the enjoyment of the occasion. He brought to the feast a wonderful gift that was received with great joy.

I enjoy all kinds of entertainment - both sacred and secular. I like Christian entertainment because it encourages me to focus on my relationship with Christ. I like secular entertainment because I believe that all men and women are made in the image of God. Therefore, I want to celebrate with them their talents and skills, to share in their happiness, and to make them feel that as human beings that their contribution to life is important.

So good to read, my piano pupil's dad was telling me about the fun with the young teenagers at Church, and the sleep over, and the prayer meeting with the young lads that lasted for one and a half hours! They were so enthusiastic... wow! This is my new Church, my part at the moment is to lift them in prayer.

I'm having trouble thinking that for one to "make your calling and election sure" is pooh-poohed to associate it with my point. I count that as a bit unfortunate as though using God's mercy were a determination rather than what happens when we break from our own steadfast pattern. But if I have made a critical miscalculation in that assumption, my heartfelt apology!!
