It’s a decent rebuttal in the round, but I don’t know if it’s really a global argument. It could be rounded out by extending the radius to address the circular arguments often kicked about in the sphere of flat earthery. Circumventing all of that leaves you with some facts and ball-park figures, but it has the ring of not really rolling out the whole meridian of interconnected horizons of flattish thought, everything that orbits the basic circumlocutions of the whole rotundus of revolving whatabouts and spitt-balled arguments of the global flat-earth spiral of thought.
Bravo!

I've seen quite a few of these flat earth threads on here now and the one certain conclusion is that someone who believes that the earth is flat will never be swayed by any kind of evidence, not in a million years. I'm convinced that if a flat earther was taken up to orbit the earth a few times they would still be able to dismiss it later as some kind of hoax. I think that is the only interesting thing about these discussions, obviously it's not only flat-earthers who think in this way but as an extreme example it shows how far this sort of biased thinking can go.

Mick West talks about this in his book Escaping the Rabbit Hole. He encourages an approach to debunking conspiracy theories based on empathy, respect and patience. A lot of conspiracy theory beliefs aren't based on anything rational or logical. They are based on emotional reasons and consequently a person isn't going to have their mind changed just by brute facts.

His book is peppered with anecdotes and case studies of people changing their minds and why they did. My favorite was an example of a person who believed 9/11 conspiracies until they got a job in government. They came the realization that there was no way the government was competent enough to pull off such an elaborate conspiracy. ^_^

That sounds interesting. To me it seems like one form of groupthink, which would only change if the person's group changed or some significant person changed.

Actually thank you for exposing another great example of FE deception and tactics

Let's go to the dictionary and look up "sad"
SAD: adjective

1. feeling or showing sorrow; unhappy: "I was sad and subdued"

2. pathetically inadequate or unfashionable: "the show is tongue-in-cheek—anyone who takes it seriously is a bit sad"

So what we have here is people clearly using definition #2 to describe flat earth arguments. And flat earther's respond projecting definition #1 to try to make their opponents look ignorant, mean, out of touch.

This tactic is used over and over in all kinds of ways. Especially when invoking scientific "proof". How sad.

That's kind of one of those gateway lies. If you can't see beyond that obvious fake, then flat earth is currently way beyond your ability to understand.
Do you have anything other than an opinion suggesting the moon landing was faked?

Isn't it obvious? The guy who actually took Buzz Aldrin's picture pressed the shutter which caused a breeze that whipped up the flag. This startled the man, so he stepped back and knocked down the artificial stars so you couldn't see them in the video. This made Stanley Kubrick so mad that he opened the pod bay doors and stormed out causing light from the hallway to make all sorts of shadows that shouldn't be there. Duuuuuh!

Hi, SeventyOne, could you please respond with an explanation for Jimmy D's question in post #166? Thanks!

Here's the link for it so it will be easier for you to find:

No one told me anything about it, I could see it clearly using my own eyes. I’ve posted this before, but never got a meaningful response...

How long does it take to fly from Sydney to Buenos Aries?
How long does it take to fly from Sydney to Toronto?

How do those times / distances compare to the distances on the globe us 'sheep' use and the flat earth map you free-thinkers use?

Why is it that Toronto appears to be much closer to Sydney Than B Aires is when it is actually almost 4000km further away? Why is this verified by commercial flight times.

Please don’t pretend that you’ve answered this in the past, or ask me to search for explanations on line.

While he's at it, he could also respond to my logical refutation of the existence of a round earth conspiracy in post #160.

There's nothing to refute. SeventyOne has never presented any evidence for such a conspiracy nor has he suggested any possible motive for it.

But he's called us ignorant, deceived, liars or all of the above... So who needs evidence?

Here's a more detailed look at what I was getting at in my post...

Flat Earth Theory Debunked by Short Flights (QF27 & QF28) From Australia to South America

So much for Seventy One's claims that I was told "a lie", a Flat Earth is totally untenable.

Obviously this is just one tiny bit of evidence, but it's one that I like because it's so simple and easily verifiable. The only possible rebuttal is to invent a web of conspiracy so vast and crazy that no one could genuinely believe it.

Except they already do that, and they do believe it.

It's possible. I'm going to get stuff thrown at me for saying this, but I have an open mind on the issue. It's possible.

Many of the same organizations and institutions making the most effort to mock, ridicule, and marginalize those who question a billions-year-old earth, evolution, climate change hysteria, and a generally anti-human map of the future go out of their way to do the same to those who question the shape of the earth.

I'm not saying it's flat. I'm just saying I wouldn't be so quick to ridicule those who wonder if it is.

The evidence that the earth is a globe is overwhelming. And, it comes from so many different authorities. Flat earth believers are the type of people who are involved in or believe in, any fantastical conspiracy theory going!

Just saying. There are also those who say that the evidence for Darwinian evolution, cataclysmic climate change in the near future, etc. is overwhelming. I'm not going to try to argue for or against this. Just pointing out that the same folks who tend to ridicule many Christians on other topics are quick to do the same on this topic.
