How can I overcome uncontrollable fits of rage in which I'm literally kicking and screaming on the ground?

I know rage is one of the works of the flesh mentioned in Galatians 5 and that God hates it, but I can't seem to get myself under control when it happens. It literally hurts my stomach when I try to subdue my anger. It's like a cup that is over pouring.

Do any of you have any advice on how to manage your anger and not go into fits of rage?

It sounds like you are bound by an evil spirit. You will also find that behind that kind of anger is a demon of pride. I'd be seeking deliverance if I were you.

How can I be bound by an evil spirit? I thought Christians had the Holy Spirit living in their hearts.

Evils spirits attach themselves to the soul, not to the new spirit. The Holy Spirit lives in the spirit of man. Evil spirits start in the mind, injecting thoughts, pretending to be you. If the Christian does not reject the thoughts, they begin to influence the will. Once they have control of the will, the Christian is then possessed. It's rare, but it is possible. You will hear people say, "I don't know what came over me". I can tell them. It is not them! However, God holds us responsible for our situation. Christians have everything that they need to live in freedom.

God has given us free will and He respects that. Satan has no such respect. That is why we must resist the devil. If we do not, we become captives. (2 Timothy 2:26)

I don't normally jump on the evil spirit bandwagon but your post has it written all over imo. Hopefully your church embraces deliverance ministry or find a place that does. It could've come to this from a trauma, witnessing rage growing up? Any ideas? Counselling re hurts and frustrations in your life would probably benefit too.

I think I've been oppressed by an evil spirit for the last several months but I don't know it for sure.
  • I've had images and thoughts of physically hurting Jesus and cursing God plaguing my mind which I hated and couldn't stop thinking. Fortunately the Lord made this stop and I'm cured from that.
  • Everytime someone mentions Lord Jesus I get a weird feeling of anxiety going through me even though I want to love him.
This makes me very anxious at times and it makes me feel I'm not actually saved and that I'm deceiving myself.

Do you know what causes your anger?
Sometimes just taking the time to count slowly to ten gives a chance for anger to subside.
But if it is uncontrollable then you should get professional help and possibly medication.

go to the dr and ask for help from anger management

My daughter's church (Church of the Nazarene) is having anger management classes for the teens!

 More churches should do this, IMO.

Wow. This is tough one. First of all, the fact that you are posting this tells us that you know this is sin. When I first became a Christian and would have fits of rage, I didn't think it was sin ("I'm just passionate about my beliefs..."). It took years of conviction through Christian counseling and prayer for this sin to be lifted. You know it's a sin. Now pray. Read the word. Trust other Christians to help. Give yourself time. We are all a work in progress.

Ephesians 4
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

James 1
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

Proverbs 14
29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

Proverbs 15
18 A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

Proverbs 16
32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Proverbs 17
27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

Ecclesiastes 7
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

I pray about my struggles.

Likely theses are unresolved problems from when you were one or two years old or younger.

How these unresolved experiences have been reinforced since then is
something you need to work out. It might take time. There are likely
other self-defeating responses you have in you life that you can look
at as experiences where you could respond differently now if you work at it.

I work third shift as a Lab Technician and visit my elderly father every day after work, who also has Bill Winston tuned in that time of day. He was having problem with his Samsung Galaxy Watch and I was working on it listening to Bill Winston out of the corner of my ear. About half way through the sermon I cried out in great emotion and my dad asks what's wrong? Nothings wrong, I just came through! My mind put together the sermon Bill Winston had put together and triggered a rare emotional response. Wow! Here is the sermon....

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:
12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. - Luke 15

The Prodigal Son was planning on bargaining with his dad. Maybe he could fit in among the hired servants and work his way up from there. Wow! Was everyone in for a surprise! Well anyway, Bill Winston built the scenario and it triggered an emotional response. I can't wait to find the link to the sermon!

It may help to understand the NT terminology regarding demons. I find it generally doesn't help to think in terms of "possession". The NT uses the term Daimonizomai, which we can best translate as "demonized". That allows for any range of demonic influence. It also allows that a born-again believer can be oppressed by the enemy to varying degrees.

How to deal with it? Probably a multi-pronged holistic approach is best. Confess any known sin, stay in the Word and in continual prayer and union with the Lord, get prayer support from mature Spirit-filled Christians, and possibly get counseling help from them to help get to any natural root that's needs resolution.

Do all that in the context of faith, believing that He that is in you is greater than he that is in the world. That faith will comfort you as you navigate through this, and will guide you to victory. The Lord has not and will not forsake you.

I found that I don't need anger management classes.

What I need is for people to stop working so hard to p!$$ me off!

The fact that you are recognizing this is a problem is the first step because so many people will just say "I have a bad temper" and brush it to the side. You have recognized that this is a serious issue and I pray you seek Christ for answers to resolve this and through Him and Him only and by His name will you overcome. For we overcome by the blood of the Lamb. God bless you and do not give up, resist and he will flee, seek Him and you will find Him.

Jesus told us how to overcome the flesh. He said "Pray that you enter no into temptation for the Spirit is willing, and the flesh weak". As we spend dedicated time in prayer, and getting to know God's word through bible reading, we soak in the strength of the Holy Spirit. This strength help us overcome our fleshly desires. That includes overcoming anger.
