As I told someone yesterday, telling me not to worry is like telling me not to breathe.

I have heard all the Christian things, such as let go and let God, or give all your cares to Jesus at the foot of the cross, etc... I have read all the scriptures concerning worry. None of it helps. Worrying has been an ongoing battle and while I have been a Christian for ten years, the Christian ways of getting rid of worry don't work for me. I tried just not worrying, yeah, that didn't work.

What are some practical ways?

My mom says what's going to happen will happen and you cannot change it. There is no comfort in that at all. It doesn't help me to stop worrying. My worrying is now affecting my health. Most of the day yesterday my pulse was above 100. It didn't finally drop down to under 90 till last night. My blood pressure is now in the hypertension range. When just six months ago it was a good blood pressure.

I need to stop worrying for my health.

I might say I don't worry. But I think worry can come in disguised forms > unforgiveness can be worry about what someone else has done. Paranoid nonsense can be worry about what someone else will or could do. Lust can be worry about if I will get a pleasure I want.

All are pathological liars, somehow. May be you need to see worry as a pathological liar . . . about what really will happen, or could happen, and about where your attention needs to be.

As you might be discovering > I would say that death and pain and loss of health are not enough to motivate us to do what is right. Also, saving my own life is not the really right motivation.

I need to want to please God and love people the way God wants. Worry in its various forms is anti-love. Being healthy in love is what matters, and being pleasing to God.

So, I need help, too > do not let yourself get isolated with your problem, as though you are the only one. And we can help each other, praying and having hope for one another.

And if we fail, do not feed on that, but know God has hope for us; this is about how He is able. Worry can be a trick to get you to feel it is about you being able and how much you care, I suppose. But this is about how God is the One who truly cares and is able >

"casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)

"Seek first the Kingdom of God." If you are doing God's will, God might heal you.

I am not a doctor, but studied nutrition online with Google searches. Caffeine may increase the heart rate and temporarily raise blood pressure.
As one gets older plaque builds up in the arteries, coronary arteries, carotid arteries, and smaller vessels. This can raise blood pressure. Avoiding saturated fats and cholesterol may help. This may be attempted by shifting more to whole grains, vegetables and fruits.

Eating too much salt raised blood pressure.

Some people have hazardous occupations. Truck drivers lived to be 61. Air pollution from traffic, sitting for long periods and unhealthy diets may be to blame.

You should not smoke or drink much alcohol.

You may need to see a doctor and get your blood tested including a cholesterol panel.

How often do you spend a day praying and do you honestly read the bible everyday, etc?

A technique I love using is to be quiet and enjoy the presence of God, no talking, no prayers, just sitting in his presence enjoying God's company, try it!

If you do all these things and still nothing why not see a counsellor or doctor (assume you've seen your pastor, priest, etc)?

I know what's causing it. The cause of my health issues is the worrying.

That is why I'm looking for practical advice on not worrying.

All you really can do is focus on other things, and that's honest.

Prayer helps because it centers you on God, instead of self. Hobbies and work helps, because your keeping your hands busy and your mind occupied on other things than your problems. Reading a good book helps, as it gives you a means to escape your life for a bit.

It's just keeping your mind elsewhere - and I do know it's difficult, but as you said, your so focused on your problems that your making yourself sick, so you have to.

When you are trying to fall asleep at night, which is when all this is most likely to enter your head, then make up a dream to fall asleep to, something nice to keep the thoughts at bay...

The longer you keep your mind off the issue at hand, the easier it becomes to keep the bad thoughts away, and before you know it you'll stop thinking about it all the time.

Like anything else, it's a process...

Since putting your own problems in a different light is also important, try picking up the book "By Their Blood" it's a book about modern Christian martyrs, and might help you see your own problems differently, less all encompassing.

I don't know if this will help you but I came to realise that worrying is really a lack of faith in God.
I know that sounds harsh but I used to worry a lot and sometimes it pops up still.

If Jesus said that God cares for even the sparrows, who am I to disbelieve that He cares so much more for His children?

Sometimes I have to give myself a hard talk and ask myself if my worrying about something changes things, the answer is always NO!
And mostly what I have worried about doesn't happen anyway.

Most of our worries come to nothing and we have wasted our time and made ourselves sick about it in the meantime.

It is an ongoing practice in obedience to trust God for each day as it comes and to give all my cares to Him.

The release doesn't come instantly but is a process that does happen when you mindfully surrender each day to Him.

Cast your care on Jesus and leave it there. OK, you know that.

You can only think one thought at a time. Replace every worry thought with a positive, Bible truth antidote. Confess it as sin, which it is. Ask Lord Jesus to be your peace of mind and the peace of your heart. Command all worry thoughts to leave you. Worry is simply fear of the future. Ask God to reveal His love to you. Perfect love casts out fear.

When I respond to you, I try to do it in a non-religion way......yet in a way that would make you follow spiritual laws in ways that would benefit you......For you will feel the rain whether or not you are just......if you happen to be standing outside when it falls.

Therefore....i would suggest just giving up. You did the best you could for this situation....now just stop trying and accept your fate. And care not what that fate will be, because you will have to just deal with it when it comes anyway....so just wait for it.

There was a time, when I bought a house I couldnt afford, and right when all my saving was used up, I lost my job.....and stayed that way for more than half a year. I worried for months, did everything I could to get myself out of the situation....Got myself is greater debt while having no income.....I felt my life slipping away. Then I gave up.....I told God to go ahead and take that house.....I dont care anymore... All my worry and care dropped. Then.........miraculous things started happening...... and now more than 15 years later, I still have that house.

Had I continued to try to keep the house myself....I would have lost it.....and maybe even my life....

So my advice is to give up....... (note: going to lawyers and telling them to give them everything they want, is NOT giving up, that is still you trying to help your own situation......to give up, you must do .....nothing.........then everything will be done for you.)

Worry can cause panic attacks. These are usually of a short term nature. Worry creates stress. Unsolved problems create worries.

I was homeless without a car. I tried to pray to God and read the Bible when I could. I had to beg charities. Did not claim disability. I did not marry as I could not help enough. I meditated about celibacy instead of the intimate pleasures I sought in the past. Worked a job, left the homeless shelter and rented a room. Bought a used motorbike. Moved to a wealthier city and worked two jobs 60-70 hrs a week. Eventually my parents bought a new pick-up truck for me. My brain was not right, but kept trying. I was lifted out of my extreme poverty. It gave me joy to be able to give to charities I once received help from. I worry that I can not give enough, or I gave to the wrong people. My ignorance of health and nutrition damaged my cardiovascular system. I have a high CAC score to prove it. I am 60 and not sure I will live a long life.

Paul advised flee fornication. Lust brought more children than one could support. Marrying unfaithful people led to financial destruction. Seek God. God knows everything. God can remember things I can not.

How often do you spend a day praying and do you honestly read the bible everyday, etc?

About 30 minutes reading and about 30 minutes praying on my workdays. I work 13 hour days. So, not much time during my shift. Twice as long on praying on my days off.

A technique I love using is to be quiet and enjoy the presence of God, no talking, no prayers, just sitting in his presence enjoying God's company, try it!

My girlfriend thinks I should try meditating. Not the sit on the floor an say "ohm" kind of meditating. Just the clearing my head type. My problem is I'm not good at clearing my head.

If you do all these things and still nothing why not see a counsellor or doctor (assume you've seen your pastor, priest, etc)

Actually thought about seeing a counselor.

Thank you!

EO folks might fuss at me for this, but the Jesus Prayer has done wonders for me, for my focus, and for letting go of worrisome thoughts (contemplative prayer in general has changed a lot for my mental and emotional well being). I'll just post the wiki link, but there are plenty of resources, like the Philokalia.

1.Practice Misfortune
“It is in times of security that the spirit should be preparing itself for difficult times; while fortune is bestowing favors on it is then is the time for it to be strengthened against her rebuffs.” -Seneca

Seneca, who enjoyed great wealth as the adviser of Nero, suggested that we ought to set aside a certain number of days each month to practice poverty. Take a little food, wear your worst clothes, get away from the comfort of your home and bed. Put yourself face to face with want, he said, you’ll ask yourself “Is this what I used to dread?”

It’s important to remember that this is an exercise and not a rhetorical device. He doesn’t mean “think about” misfortune, he means live it. Comfort is the worst kind of slavery because you’re always afraid that something or someone will take it away. But if you can not just anticipate but practice misfortune, then chance loses its ability to disrupt your life.

Montaigne was fond of an ancient drinking game where the members took turns holding up a painting of a corpse inside a coffin and cheered “Drink and be merry for when you’re dead you will look like this.”

Emotions like anxiety and fear have their roots in uncertainty and rarely in experience. Anyone who has made a big bet on themselves knows how much energy both states can consume. The solution is to do something about that ignorance. Make yourself familiar with the things, the worst-case scenarios, that you’re afraid of.

Practice what you fear, whether a simulation in your mind or in real life. The downside is almost always reversible or transient.

I suffer from this as well. There's not much you can do about if counseling dont work for you. All you can do is learn to just relax when you can. Find things to help you relax. Drink some tea, watch some YouTube. Occupy your time with things that make you happy. If your focused on just worrying about having high blood pressure it will never go away. Look at your life style do you get exercise. I know you said your healthy its just cause you worry. Do you sit inside a lot? In case I missed the point I'm trying to get across what I'm mainly trying to say right here is analyze your life how much free time do you have on your hands. Stay busy!

Please dont clear your mind nor believe what's going to happen will happen. Rather encourage you when a worry thought comes, deliberately think on some Scripture such as:

- God loves you with an everlasting love (John 3:16-17, Jer 31)
- God promises to never leave you nor forsake you (Deu 31:6)
- The spirit of God made you, and the breath of the Almighty gives you life. Job 33:4
- you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psa 139:13-14)
-The Lord says, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jer 29:11

- God is great, majestic, gracious, full of compassion, good to me, +++++ Psa 145
