1 Corinthians 14:20-25 New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised Catholic Edition (NRSVACE)
20 Brothers and sisters,[a] do not be children in your thinking; rather, be infants in evil, but in thinking be adults. 21 In the law it is written,

‘By people of strange tongues
and by the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people;
yet even then they will not listen to me,’

says the Lord. 22 Tongues, then, are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if all prophesy, an unbeliever or outsider who enters is reproved by all and called to account by all. 25 After the secrets of the unbeliever’s heart are disclosed, that person will bow down before God and worship him, declaring, ‘God is really among you.’

It makes more sense that God in this case will use a language the unbeliever understands to expose their sin.
The secrets disclosed are via prophesying, not tongues.
Tongues, when spoke among the unlearned and unbelievers, they think you are crazy.

@ByTheSpirit- Another thing to remember is that you will become more fluent in the language as you continue to use it. You don't have to make it up. The Holy Spirit will give it to you. At first you may be given only a few words or a phase. Just continue to pray by faith what the Holy Spirit gives you. I was only given three syllables when I first received. Now, 30 years later, those three syllables have been multiplied into many more syllables and phrases.

BTW- I was raised Baptist, too, but my pastor did not preach against something just because He had not experienced it or did not understand it. Wise man, that pastor was.

In Acts 2, clearly they spoke complete sentences and shared the gospel.
So, the claim of only a few words does not fit .
