I watched the Superbowl yesterday because my 8 year old son wanted to. I noticed that there were commercials that seemed to validate and empower women. Then the half-time show started. I turned it off and had to discuss with my son and my two daughters why it was inappropriate. Men artists at the Superbowl are celebrated for their music but women artists are celebrated for their bodies. I wonder how many Christian men would stop supporting the NFL until they realize that women are not eye candy and should be respected for their music as well. I know they do it because there is a lot of money to be had. But if christian men would take a stand, that is a majority of the men in this country, could it help?

Finally, something I can applaud you for saying. However, while I agree with you on what you're saying here, I'm of a mind that even if I take a stand as a Christian man, it's a Lost Cause. In fact, I EXPECT to lose, politically speaking that is.

I see no difference in women like Shakira and Jlo using their natural talents and bodies to attract people to the show and generate wealth for themselves and entertainment for their fans and the two teams of football players using their natural talents and bodies to attract viewers to the show, generate wealth for themselves/teams/owners and put on a show for everyone to enjoy.

It's the same thing. The double standard is your own.

Since we are made in the image of God (including His Glory), human bodies ARE "eye candy" to a certain extent, but we are certainly much more than that.

We don't need to denounce sexual attraction. We just need to keep it in perspective.

"As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout,
So is a lovely woman who lacks discretion." Proverbs 11:22 NKJV

Very much agree with your view of that halftime show.

As to whether Christians could turn the tide on this kind of women-as-objects NFL halftime show, my own personal guess is no, they could not (the ones that would try). Ok, maybe they could have a modest amount of influence if they made enough noise, so that performers themselves would aim for more for music as the show. Or maybe not then either. Just guessing. It seems though more like a cultural tide. It's...in human nature. It's the way human nature is expressing itself at the moment in reaction to our....cultural alienation from ourselves, from our spirits, and more.

Christian men (and women) are despised. We are killjoys. The scripture says we are hated for 3 reasons:
For righteousness.
For the Word.
For Christ.
I suspect if women stopped acting like eye candy then they would not be treated like eye candy. Do not blame men alone for this. Many women think that their bodies and sex are their "power" and use it as such. It is a matter of identity and secular values. I doubt we are going to change that. It is now a secular religion of "humanism" and human rights. To protest the issue would get you labeled as a hater and sexist in that you are trying to deny women their rights to pole dance half naked before 80 million people for fame and profit. It is not what men do... it is what these women actually do and insist the right to do.

I think the difference is the sexual nature of the content and the negative affects it has on people in our society. These include eating disorders, depression, unhealthy relationships for men, eating disorders etc. I don't think this is in the well being of many women and men in our society. There are many studies on this.

If you are ok with the half time show do you think there should at least be a warning to parents? Do you think that was appropriate for an 8 year old boy to watch?

So you do what is right only to be loved by others?

I understand that many feminists think this is empowering, I just think the overall effect is bad for society as shown by multiple studies.

I agree, the half time show was pretty disgusting and embarrassing.

Nope, and it probably wasn't appropriate for 8 year old girls to be participating in, and be juxtaposed with, the lead singers and the ... *ahem* ... sexually clad male entourage, either. :dontcare: ... but they did it anyway, because at the end of the Day, they can all go home and sing it all again in a refrain, "WE DID IT OOOOOURRRRR WAAAAAAAAAY!!!!"

...yay.

Study this most misunderstood scripture and all will come clear.

"Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also."

It will also require a study of women's 'anatomy'.

No... but we are resigned to the fact that the world is never going to share our values and will in fact hate us for them. Also you are misplacing the blame. This is not a male issue.

I guess you missed the Maroon 5 half-time show last year.

A lot of them got mad at football players for protesting police abuse. Maybe if you got Breitbart and Hannity on the bandwagon, you'd get some traction.

You are wrong. It is a human issue. Men and women need to take responsibility for the negative attributes of our society and can be demonstrated to be harmful. Blaming women only is part of the problem.

The thing is these halftime shows are geared toward the women not the men. The halftime of normal games is 15 minutes aka a bathroom break. The networks, in order to increase viewers of their commercials, wanted to attract women so they came up with the extended halftime to include pop stars specifically to attract women who had no interest in the sport. I , as I always do , did not watch the half time entertainment and went online during halftime of the Super Bowl as pop music is not my thing but the women in my family who show no interest in the game will stop whatever they are doing and watch the pop show. The majority of men in the US may claim to be Christians but how many are committed to traditional Christian values? And how many watch the halftime programs?

Well I did not watch it. I tuned out the half time show so that is my part. Self control. Control yourself before you try and control others.
Did you watch it?

Only for about a minute before I saw where it was going. Then I watched it later to see for myself what people were talking about.

Who's trying to control others? Educating people so they can make better informed decisions is not control but empowerment.
