From the "Move along, nothing to see here" files: Illinois Board of Elections Admits Non-US Citizens Voted Illegally in 2018 Election

Some of the 574 non-U.S. citizens who were registered to vote in the 2018 election voted illegally, the Illinois State Board of Elections said.
...
The board said on Tuesday that it confirmed 19 people who aren’t citizens of the United States voted in Illinois in the election.
...
Illinois lets legal and illegal immigrants get a driver’s license or state identification and, in some cases, people who obtain such IDs are automatically enrolled as voters

Illinois seriously needs to review the process by which they automatically enroll people for voting. This shouldn't happen.

Note, however, in this case, those illegally voting also had picture IDs. Picture ID laws that Republicans love, and which tend to disenfranchise the poor, wouldn't have made any difference.

19? Wow, that must have had a giant effect on the eventual result. Let’s disenfranchise millions of people to make sure it never happens again..

"Some of the 574 non-U.S. citizens who were registered to vote in the 2018" Those were in only 7 counties. You have to wonder how many in other counties. How they were able to register is something they need to check out, but they won't chances are. They are living up to their reputation I'm afraid.

I worked with the homeless for many years, and I never understood the part about how they aren't able to get id's. It wasn't that hard, and most of them had them.

When I lived in that state you didn't need much to register, and if you didn't have the paperwork that they claimed you needed on the state website? They would bypass it and register you anyway. That wasn't uncommon. Everyone knows that too.

Me neither, the clutching at straws in attempt top make Trump look bad continues

It's called a mistake, and as you have testified by your typo missing the same exact mark...it happens. Very funny.

Better still, let's get the White House to appoint a committee to compile a list of registered voters nationwide, and then quietly disband it when it becomes clear that the committee won't fix any problems even if the states hadn't told them where to stick their requests for voter lists...

Hold on, 2018 election? Is this a local Illinois election?

If so, the issue is a bit muddied then.

House GOP passes measure blasting allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections
Though it remains illegal for any non-citizen to participate in federal and state elections, federal law leaves it up to the states to decide whether non-residents can vote in local or special elections. Non-citizens currently can vote in some local elections in 11 states.

It may very well have something to do with this. This is a good article that points out associated problems.

Voter fraud is real here in California. My in-laws neighbors are not citizens yet and they somehow received mail in ballots last election.
Your in-laws seem to know their neighbors quite well, being aware of their legal status in the country as well as the mail they receive.

Yes they are good friends, and they are the ones who showed the ballots to my father in law.

There is no doubt that state election systems are a shambles and need reform and modernization. They are even vulnerable to foreign hackers. Of course that is not to say that there have ever been any hacking attempts, especially not by the Russians.

Illinois seriously needs to review the process by which they automatically enroll people for voting. This shouldn't happen.

...therein lies the problem.

Secretary of State Jesse White’s office admitted it was at fault for the “isolated” incident, and offered assurances that the “programming error” in the state’s new automatic voter registration process has since been repaired.

Illinois law allows immigrants who are not citizens to get a driver’s license or state identification. Both state and federal law prohibits non-citizens from participating in American elections.

I don't think ID's and drivers licenses should automatically register someone to vote.

When I moved to Virginia, while I could bring all the documentation with me for voting at the same time I got my license and have them copy it there and send it to the state election board, it was still a separate process, one in which, all the documentation proven and sent over, still had to be examined and approved by the election board prior to my becoming a registered voter.

Just because you can obtain all the documentation for an ID, does not necessarily mean you have adequate documentation to vote legally.

Therefore, automatic enrollment seems an attempt to override and erode law, because if someone is registered to vote they may automatically believe they are allowed legally to do so, and it may not be the case.

So I would uphold keeping voter registration to be a separate process, and a separate oversight, even as you make it simple, such as the process I went through.
