Is it your claim that the soldier at the foot of the cross was the centurion whose servant was healed ?

You seem to want to insert a lot into scripture ... that isn't explicitly there ...

No, I was responding to your question, but it could have been, or another one just like him. Don't forget Cornelius was a centurion.

I'm just combating those that make a lot of assumptions about the thief on the cross to make up things like baptism isn't necessary. What makes anyone so sure he wasn't baptized long ago?

Just as the Corinthians came short in no gift 1 Cor. 1, but were still carnal, they were quenching the Spirit and not saved. Do you honestly believe you will be saved while still committing willful sins as some teach? Are you one of those too?
The Corinthians were christians ... as Paul attests ... he refers to them as brothers ... and says that they are babes in Christ.

Do you dispute this ?

1 Corinthians 3

  • Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.

His next letter to them.

8 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. 9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation

The scriptures don't speak of such.

Do you realize what distortions you could bring to the Word of God ... by adding what you might assume ... should be there ?

Believe the scriptures as they are ...

Personally I disagree because I’ve never actually seen this first hand. Every Christian I know says they still sin. I don’t believe perfection can be achieved in this life.
Amen! Those who believe they live a sinless, without fault or defect, flawless, absolute perfect life 100% of the time (exactly as Jesus lived) are suffering from a terminal case of self righteousness. (1 John 1:8-10)

Godly sorrow does produce repentance which leads to salvation ... for unbelievers.

Note that this is Paul's second recorded letter to the (albeit baby) carnal christians that he wrote to in his first letter ...

Thank-you

I like to bring the truth out into the light ...

1 John 1:8-10

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

There is no mention of repentance. Do you think willful sins like murder are automatically covered by our Advocate? If yes, then you you'd be wrong.
Repentance is much more ... one's acceptance of Christ ... rather than any renunciation of sin.

Non-believers can renounce sin.

The gospel is all about Christ ...

Matthew 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”

Personally I think they’re either delusional or just plain dishonest.

You may have thought they were already saved while staying on the path they were on, but would they have gone to heaven if Paul had never intervened?

The purpose of repentance is the recognition that we can never be good enough on our own; that we are weak and are always stumbling. IOW, it is not just individual sins, but the whole sin nature. The rebirth into a new nature is what will ultimately bring reconciliation with God. It was sin that separated us from God, and Jesus cleansed us from all our OLD sins, then gave us a new nature that doesn't want to sin, so we don't willfully. They may commit unintentional trespasses, but not willful sins of lawlessness.

Granted, I am speaking of true Christians, not those of false teachings.

Let's get real. No amount of doing good or keeping laws can merit heaven.

Ok, let's do:

John 5:28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.

Christ said it, and that's real enough for me. :)

It isn't recorded that the thief was baptized in water.

However, Christ had plans for him ...

Then you believe some one can be saved apart from the gospel? Will a atheist who does good works rise to live because of his works?

Yes ... Paul declares that they are in Christ.

In Christ ... is saved ...

That's actually more of confession.

Repentance is a turning to Christ ... to save us.
