I understand Moses wrote Exodus. So why is it not written in the first person?
I believe simply because he has to speak of his birth and death and after his death, so it just works better to put himself out of the context as a first person and write a historical document inspired by God of course.

Moses didn't write Exodus. That's a misunderstanding. Moses "gave the law", meaning that Moses gave the Israelites the ten commandments.

The first five books of the bible are known as The Law because they contain the law. But Moses did not write the first five books of the bible.

There are several internal claims in the Book of Exodus which directly ascribe authorship to Moses. He is told to record on a scroll the episode of Israel's victory over Amalek (17:14). He is instructed to write down the Ten Commandments (34:4, 27-29). He "wrote down everything Yahweh had said" (24:4), which included at least the Book of the Covenant (20:22-23:33). These internal claims are supported by a strong association of Mosaic authorship for the Pentateuch found in other OT books and in NT books as discussed in the Introduction to the Pentateuch (see, also, Kaiser 1990:287-288). When all the evidence found in Scripture is considered, along with Moses' qualifications for writing Exodus and the remaining books of the Pentateuch, it is hard to deny the strong likelihood of Mosaic authorship.

"In addition, Jos 8:31refers to the command of Ex 20:25 as having been “written in the Book of the Law of Moses.” The NT also claims Mosaic authorship for various passages in Exodus (see, e.g., Mk 7:10; 12:26 and NIV text notes; see also Lk 2:22–23). Taken together, these references strongly suggest that Moses was largely responsible for writing the book of Exodus—

Because it’s meant to be a narrative with commandments and so forth, not a personal letter, same goes for the Gospels.

Well Paul's letters to the early churches are just that. But i see what you mean.

I understand Moses wrote Exodus. So why is it not written in the first person?

Because He wasn't there. He is believed to be the editor and compiler of older manuscripts. Here's an example:

Gen 5
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in His own likeness. 2 Male and female He created them, and He blessed them. And in the day they were created, He called them “man.”a

3 When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son in his own likeness, after his own image; and he named him Seth. 4And after he had become the father of Seth, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5So Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

6When Seth was 105 years old, he became the father of Enosh. 7And after he had become the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8So Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

9When Enosh was 90 years old, he became the father of Kenan. 10And after he had become the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11So Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

12When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalaleel. 13And after he had become the father of Mahalaleel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14So Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

He was editor of the older manuscripts but exodus itself, was authored by him. But genesis, was most likely documented or verbally relayed. Not sure. If God can protect a written tradition God can also protect oral traditions. Even if writting was not invented yet for example in the garden of eden.

A common mistaken assumption. If we don't have a copy of Adams writings, that doesn't meant they didn't exist. Not all of history has been preserved. Though it seems Adam did write everything down as it happened.

I am not assuming anything, on the other hand assuming there was written tradition when we don't have archaological evidence of it back then would be presumptious. But we can in faith believe that there was some sort of documentation, however God can preserve his word in anyway he wants, verbal or written.

There are written details about the abilities of "the first family". They were not slackers. We don't have to presume they were illiterate since there are good details.

The Descendants of Cain
…21 And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
22 Zillah also gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron.

This was a remembered poem or song you are proposing?

15When Mahalalel was 65 years old, he became the father of Jared. 16After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years; then he died.

18When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. 19After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20Jared lived a total of 962 years; then he died.

21When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. 22After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God for 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24Enoch walked with God; then he was gone because God took him.

25When Methuselah was 187 years old, he became the father of Lamech. 26After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27Methuselah lived a total of 969 years; then he died.

28When Lamech was 182 years old, he became the father of a son. 29He named him Noah [Relief], and said, "This child will bring us relief from the work and painful labor of our hands since the LORD has cursed the ground." 30After Lamech became the father of Noah, he lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31Lamech lived a total of 777 years; then he died.

32When Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

I did a word search for "written, writing, and write" in a literal translation such as the NKJV and those words did not show up till exodus. I believe you are quoting genesis five above, yet in the NKJV it says "geneologies" not "writing."

try your own word search:
BibleGateway - Keyword Search: write

geneologies can be also documented in a verbal tradition as well, just like you remember who is in your family. God should not be limited to only using our memories or using documents. God actually inspired the new testament writers to come up with brand new content off the cuff. No need to rely on neurons or ink or parchment.

I think God told Him what to write, Just like God put knowledge in the mind of the apostles to write the new testament,

"knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God[fn] spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit."
