Re:
"The Holy Spirit dwells only in obedient believers"

Of course, this is not my idea … it is what John 14 says!

John 14 (NLT):
15 If you love me, obey my commandments.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.
The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him.
But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans — I will come to you.
19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live.
20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father,
and you are in me, and I am in you.
21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me.

And because they love me, my Father will love them.
And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.

23 All who love me will do what I say.
My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.

24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me.

John 14 says: Having the indwelling Holy Spirit is conditional
If you love Jesus, you will obey His commandments … 14:15
If you love Jesus, Father God will give you the Holy Spirit … 14:15-16
If you love Jesus, you will obey His commandments … 14:21
If you love Jesus, Father God will love you … 14:21
If you love Jesus, He will love you and reveal Himself to you … 14:21
If you love Jesus, you will do what He says … 14:23
If you love Jesus, Father God will love you … 14:23
If you love Jesus, Father God and Jesus (and the HS?) will come inside … 14:23

John 14 says most believers today do NOT have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside
… simply because they are NOT obeying His commandments.
Does this remind you of the church of Laodicea in Revelation 3.

So are you implying logically that the Holy Spirit comes and goes according to a believer's obedience (as opposed to vs 16), or that what we consider disobedience is not really disobedience, seeing as how the Holy Spirit will never leave us (according to vs 16), or something else --perhaps you are referring to a mindset of obedience?

What do you think about Galatians 5:4 ...
"You have become estranged from Christ,
you who attempt to be justified by law;
you have fallen from grace."

This seems like a question you yourself should be answering, given the content of your thread.

Here is another verse that supports what you have stated in the OP, my friend.

"And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him" (Acts of the Apostles 5:32).

Also, Romans 8:1 says that there is no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh (sin), but who walk after the Spirit.

To all:

I believe many in the church today settle for a greasy form of grace that makes for an allowance for them to be secure in their grievous sin on some level. But God's plan of salvation does not work like that. It should be no surprise really. It is there in black and white on almost every page of the New Testament. Take Matthew 7:23. Those believers who did wonderful works in Christ's name were told to depart from Jesus because they worked iniquity or lawlessness. Jesus did not know them because they justified sin (See also 1 John 2:3-4, and 1 John 3:10, and 1 John 3:15). It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. To hit a person over the head some more (if that is not enough), Jesus said if anyone does not do what He says, they are like a fool who built his house upon the sand, and when a storm came, great was the fall of that house (Matthew 7:26-27). Still not enough? Acts of the Apostles 3:23 says that everyone who does not hear (obeys) that prophet (JESUS), they will be destroyed. Over, and over, and over again. The Bible is warning men of God to live holy.

To all:

Take 1 Kings 13:11-32

The man of God was killed for listening to a false prophet. So just because you are a man of God does not mean you cannot be deceived and destroyed by the enemy. For why are we told to work out our salvation with fear and trembling? Why all the trembling if Paul is not talking about fear?

There are so many warnings, and yet many will not listen.

I can only share the Word and pray so that some may be able to see one day (While there is still time).

May God bless you all.

With loving kindness to you in Christ,

Sincerely,

~J.

Over, and over, and over again. The Bible is warning men of God to live holy.
Yes, this is why God has been telling His prophets that
the church today is FAST ASLEEP ... DEAD even!
That's one reason why America is under God's judgment, with much worse to come.

The other major reason is America has aborted 70 million of His creation.
But, don't worry, the coming economic CRASH will wake up everyone BIG Time.
From DEATH to LIFE ... that's what His church needs!

Along with showing them the many Scriptures, I believe we should be patient, and pray for them, and show them the love of God, as well (Both in word, action, and deed).

As much as I am strongly against OSAS and it’s related beliefs with a white hot passion, I have seen some Conditional Salvationists hate “Eternal Security” or a “Sin and Still Be Saved Doctrine” so much that they forget how to speak in love to others. I believe we should hate the belief, and the sin and we should love the soul of the one whom we disagree with.

Yes, if we love Jesus enough to obey His commandments,
we will have the precious Holy Spirit on the inside (Ref. John 14 in the OP).

BTW, "the gift" and "the promise" refer to the baptism with the Holy Spirit,
which is the second work of grace (which some BACs receive),
and which usually is not connected with the born-again experience.
All BACs are invited to believe it, and pray for it, and expect it.
It is a baptism of anointing of spiritual power (administered by Jesus Himself).
As Peter said that those who repent and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins WILL receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, (Acts 2:38), your POV is wrong.
All BACs receive the gift.
It is by the Spirit that we are "quickened". (Rom 8:9-11)

One who has the Spirit desires to be obedient, and we strive to do so because we love Him. We aren't trying to buy His love with our obedience.

setst RE: If that were the Spirit's job, then the Spirit is extremely weak, as we have Christians falling into all kinds of sins. Your desire to be obedient is conditioned on your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

By faith, if your faith is genuine, you will desire to be obedient, and the Spirit will work with your faith to give you the victory over sin. It is always up to the Christian to remain faithful to the very end to be eternally saved, and to receive the Spirit's power to overcome sin.

For instance, you can't even receive the Holy Spirit unless your faith leads to obedience first. . .

The Spirit is only received by obeying Christ Jesus (an obedient faith)...

Acts 5 (WEB) 32 We are His witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.

John 14:15-17 (NIV)
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.

John 14:23
(NIV)
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

Faith itself is our responsibility before God by which we are judged worthy or judged condemned by God.

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (NIV)
11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

2 Thessalonians 1:5 (NIV)
5 All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.

Revelation 3:2-5 … 2 Wake up, and keep the things that remain, which are about to die, for I have found no works of yours perfected before my God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If therefore you do not wake up, I will come as a thief, and you won't know what hour I will come to you. 4 Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes will be arrayed in white garments, and I will in no way blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

God’s Gracious Gift of Salvation, the regenerative work of God, and all the promises of God are ours by faith, and a continued faith in Christ Jesus:
  • By faith I am justified: Romans 5:1
  • By faith God credits righteousness to me: Romans 4:3-11; Romans 4:2-24
  • By faith, not works, do I receive the free gift of salvation: Romans 9:30-33
  • By faith I access God's saving grace: Romans 5:1-2
  • By faith I receive the power of God onto salvation: Romans 1:16-17
  • By faith I receive His Spirit: Acts 2:38; Acts 5:32; Galatians 3:2; Ephesians 1:13-14; John 7:37-39; John 14:15-17; John 14:23
  • By faith I am regenerated by the Holy Spirit: John 7:37-39
  • By faith I am born of God: John 1:12-13; Galatians 3:26
  • By faith to the end I receive the Crown of Life: Revelation 2:10
  • By Faith in Jesus I am sanctified: Acts 26:16-18
  • By faith I am kept by God's Power until the end 1 Peter 1:4-5
  • The end result of my faith is my salvation 1 Peter 1:9
"From faith to faith, the righteous will live by faith." Romans 1:16-17

If faith is genuine, then it will and must lead to obedience:

You must believe first to receive the Holy Spirit and His regenerating power...

John 7:37-39 (WEB) Bolding mine
38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.”
39 But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

As a New Creature in Christ by faith, YOU are responsible to:

• to put to death the misdeeds of the body to live: Romans 8:12-13
• offer ourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness: Romans 6:18-19
• to live by and walk by the Spirit we receive so we won't fulfill the lusts of the flesh: Galatians 5:16
• to sow to the Spirit to reap eternal life: Galatians 6:8-9
• to live by the Spirit to fulfill the requirements of the whole law: Romans 8:3-4
• to take off the old self and to put on new self: Ephesians 4:24-25; Colossians 3:9-10
• to abstain from reaping to the flesh so we may enter the Kingdom of God: 1 Corinthians 6:7-10; Ephesians 5:1-6
• to live as slaves to God by which we reap holiness leading to eternal life: Romans 6:22 . .

Therefore, God sanctifies us through His Spirit that indwells the believer, but only as the believer is diligent to walk and live by the Spirit God gave the believer.

The Spirit will not believe for you, rather you receive the Spirit by faith.

The Spirit will not be obedient for you, rather by faith you are to be obedient to your rightful Lord and Master.

Your faith must lead to obedience - obedience comes from Faith...

Romans 1:5 (NIV)
5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.

Romans 16:25-27 (NIV)
... 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Hebrews 5:8-10 (NIV)
8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him

The Great Commission
Matthew 28:19-20
(NIV)
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

See Romans 6

John 14 says most believers today do NOT have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside

Utter garbage. The only way we can obey the Lord is through the power of the Holy Spirit. 120 disciples obeyed the command to wait in Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit was poured out on the day of Pentecost.

Those who are born again have the indwelling Holy Spirit. He does not come and go every time we sin or make a mistake. Yes, we can evict the Lord Jesus from the throne if we refuse to accept His Lordship. That is a different issue from some kind of perfect life that exists only in your imagination.

The condition for receiving the Holy Spirit is simple. Ask. Luke 11:13. You want to do the work that God requires? Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent." John 6:29.

I am delighted to say that God's love for me does not depend on my behaviour. God loved me before I was born again and He is love by nature.

I am far from advocating a sloppy, sinful lifestyle. We should live in a way that pleases God and that is a witness and testimony to unbelievers. But it is the weak, the needy, the broken, the spiritually poor who need the Holy Spirit the most. People like me. Without the indwelling Holy Spirit as the Life of Christ, I would be utterly lost. He who has the Son has the Life. I have the Son. And the Son has me.

We have another guy who doesn't understand the conditionality warnings of the NT.
John 14 (NLT):

I understand them pretty well. They are indeed conditional, and the strength and substance of decision is of God --not of man. If we live according to the flesh, we will not be with God --indeed, we are not OF GOD.

Neither is anyone who holds to compliance with the law obedient, if he does so by his own strength. It is part of being one with him, to be obedient. Same with faith.

We can all fool ourselves.

It is by the Spirit that we are "quickened". (Rom 8:9-11)

setst RE: It is by the Spirit of Christ living IN you that you are quickened.

Romans 8:9-10
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. 10 If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

Question: How do you receive the Spirit and its quickening power?

Answer: Only by an obedient Faith do you receive the Spirit and its quickening power.

John 7:37-39 (WEB) Bolding mine…
37 “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!
38 He who believes in me,
as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.39 But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

Acts 5:32 We are His witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.

Galatians 3:2 (NIV) Bolding mine… 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?

Galatians 3:5 (NIV) Bolding mine… 5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?

Galatians 3:13-14 (WEB) Bolding mine… 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Ephesians 1:13-14 (WEB) 13 in whom you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.

Now read the next two verses of Romans 8 after the verses you listed, and you will see that this quickening is dependent on your willingness to live by the Spirit God gave you to receive life. . .

Romans 8:12-13
12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, WE have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

Galatians 5:16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

Galatians 5:24-25 (WEB)
24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.

Galatians 6:8 (WEB) 8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 Let US not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time WE will reap a harvest IF WE do not give up.

Therefore, regeneration is God’s work in those who, by faith, live and walk by His Spirit that indwells the believer. This is regeneration – only by faith - and results in Eternal Life if you do not give up.

As a New Creature in Christ by faith, YOU are responsible to:

• to put to death the misdeeds of the body to live: Romans 8:12-13
• offer ourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness: Romans 6:18-19

• to live as slaves to God by which we reap holiness leading to eternal life: Romans 6:22 . .

Therefore, God sanctifies us through His Spirit that indwells the believer, but only as the believer is diligent to walk and live by the Spirit God gave the believer - to sow to the Spirit.

The Spirit will not believe for you, but the Spirit will empower your faith to resist evil and to listen to and follow Christ Jesus. The Spirit is the Helper and Guide of the Faithful. Only as you Abide in Christ by faith will you bear the fruits of the Spirit.

Every person in the New Covenant believed in Jesus first before ever receiving the Spirit in them.

Blessings

We have another guy who doesn't understand the conditionality warnings of the NT.
John 14 (NLT):
15 If you love me, obey my commandments.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
We have another guy who tells others to follow the conditional it warnings of the NT, but doesn't follow them himself.

Does this remind you of the church of Laodicea in Revelation 3.
...but this seems to imply that truly born again believers can either lose the Holy Spirit or else never received the Holy Spirit at conversion.

Re:
"The Holy Spirit dwells only in obedient believers"

So are you implying logically that the Holy Spirit comes and goes according to a believer's obedience (as opposed to vs 16), or that what we consider disobedience is not really disobedience, seeing as how the Holy Spirit will never leave us (according to vs 16), or something else --perhaps you are referring to a mindset of obedience?

setst RE: If one claims that the Spirit will never leave them, and if such person deliberately keeps on sinning, then such sins are against the Spirit living in them - an unforgivable sin for insulting the Spirit of Grace. If that be the case, then such person will be under greater condemnation then an unbeliever - someone who never received the Spirit.

Hebrews 10:26-30 (NIV)
26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished
  • who has trampled the Son of God underfoot,
  • who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them,
  • and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge His people.”

Notice that the object of more severe punishment were saved because they were "sanctified by the blood of the covenant" and they insulted the Spirit of grace. And, the Lord will judge HIS people (vs 30)

Romans 8:12-13 (NIV)
12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

Galatians 6:7-9 (NIV)
7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked.
A man reaps what he sows.
8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest IF we do not give up.

Romans 11:19-22 (NIV) You (talking to each individual Christian) will say then, “Branches (plural - not nations of Israel but actual people) were broken off so that I (talking to individuals) could be grafted in.”
20 Granted. But they (plural for Jews) were broken off because of unbelief, and you (individual Christians) stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches (plural for Jews), he will not spare you (the Christian he is talking to) either.
22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.
  • Branches are individuals - Jew or Gentile Christians.
  • Gentiles are included by faith.
Romans 11:25... Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles (Plural individual believers) has come in.

No Gentile nations here. And their is only one Israel, not many Israels.
  • Gentiles are grafted in by faith,
  • but must remain faithful
  • or be cut off for not remaining faithful.
  • That is why we must be afraid
Blessings
