A Washington, D.C., cathedral blessed a King James Bible for the Department of Defense's newly formed Space Force.

Washington National Cathedral published a photo of Rev. Randolph “Randy” Marshall Hollerith blessing the bible on Sunday as U.S. Air Force chief of chaplains, Maj. Gen. Steven A. Schaick, stood and held it with his eyes closed.

"Today @WNCathedral blessed the official Bible for the new @SpaceForceDoD, which will be used to swear in all commanders of America's newest military branch," tweeted WNC's account.

The Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., donated the King James Bible for use in the three-minute-long ceremony.

ETA: as we all suspected, the cathedral was not entirely accurate.

But in an email Monday, Air Force spokeswoman Lynn Kirby said the description of the book as the official Space Force Bible is incorrect. And, she said, using it will not be required for commanders.

“In keeping with the Department of the Air Force historical tradition when swearing in a new service chief, the Bible mentioned in the tweet will be used during the swearing-in ceremony for the first chief of space operations,” Kirby said. “This option will remain a personal choice for each individual swearing in.”

I don't know what that means. Commanders don't get "sworn in." They were sworn in as new 2nd lieutenants, and they may or may not have used a bible. Officers never swear in again.

There is a ceremony when a major unit has a change of commanders, and a brand new unit may have an initial stand-up ceremony, but no "swearing in."

That bible is going to sit in the chief of chaplain's office and gather dust.

I was thinking along similar lines, but this was the first thing I googled.

Maybe it happens at the Chief of Staff level.

But I'd point out that a Chief of Staff is not a commander. The command chain bypasses him.

Unless they have thrown in a new, blatantly unconstitutional, requirement that all commanders of the Space Force be Christian and Protestant at that this is the bible that all commanders of the Space Force who care to use it will be sworn in on. Assuming that there is even such a ceremony as RDKirk has pointed out.

You might be correct. The Chief of Space Operations is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Other chiefs of the JCS are also sworn in in the same manner.

“In keeping with the Department of the Air Force historical tradition when swearing in a new service chief, the Bible mentioned in the tweet will be used during the swearing-in ceremony for the first chief of space operations,”
Gen. John “Jay” Raymond Is being sworn in as the new Chief of Space Operations - Soldier of Fortune Magazine

I think the WNC doesn't know what it's talking about when it states it's going to be used to "swear in all commanders of America's newest military branch".

I am pleased that all new Space Cadets will swear on this Bible.
Especially as it was sanctified for the purpose by a Bishop of the Episcopal Church, the most liberal of the denominations, which not only marries gays but ordains them to the clergy.

That sounds like a plot for a Mel Brooks Movie, Gays in Space.

We've been discussing this (laughing at it) in a Facebook retired Air Force group.

Nobody in the Space Force is going to be on the ground in front lines. They will all be FOBITs, except perhaps for some airborne specialties.

And I suspect they won't even be FOBITs. My own specialty, reconnaissance imagery analysis, deployed to forward air bases with reconnaissance aircraft back in the old film days. Today, they don't even do that--digital transmission has meant that they're all based at major command headquarters.

It could be that the initial members cut over to Space Force from the Air Force and any other services will simply take their current battle dress uniforms with them to wear as service utility uniforms for everyday duty.

It may also happen that instead of ever having their own utility uniform design, the Space Force simply uses the utility uniform contracted by the Air Force or Navy. It would be cost effective just to tag onto another large purchase rather than contracting a special order design.

My vote for an intelligent choice would be for the Space Force to use the new two-piece Air Force flight uniform as their utility uniform.
