Trump updates school prayer guidance: 'We will uphold religious liberty'

As his impeachment trial was getting underway in the Senate, President Trump gave a hat tip Thursday to his evangelical base by updating the federal guidance on prayer in public schools — an action that came on National Religious Freedom Day.

The order is similar to a 2003 guidance on school prayer, but it establishes a state-mandated filing process for complaints against local schools and school districts.

States must then send the federal government a list each year of local schools and districts that have "a policy that prevents, or otherwise denies participation in, constitutionally protected prayer," in public schools. States are also required to report local schools that do not certify to the state that they don't have unconstitutional prayer policies.

just how does Trump support Christian values?

I can't wait to see how these people react when Islamic prayer mats are showing up and students take part in the call to prayer and Islamic prayers ring out through the halls.

yes, to hear the hypocrisy from right wingers.

Reminds me of a verse.
Verse plus mountain thought.
Nice combination.

Oh God I'm sure glad that I'm not like those other people. I love being special.

I've seen bigots in school board meetings go ballistic when they realized that freedom of religion meant that Muslim kids could pray in school, when all the bigots wanted was to make everyone pray the prayers of their particular church.

You hang out at school board meetings?
Most people never attend them.

When I had kids in high school, I went to several. Once, some idiot wanted to ban the novel "Dracula" from an AP English course. She had seen the movie and confused it with the actual classic novel, and wanted "satan stuff" banned. The AP English teacher was an amazing instructor and her students got a lot of parents there.

There was a flap when someone started a Muslim student's association. I went to the meeting and pointed out that my daughter and her friends started a Fellowship of Christian Athletes group, and that it was just as fair for other religions to have their own groups, if they so desired.

A few people hyperventilated over that, too. But they lost.

My wife teaches third grade and the issue of freedom of all religions is hardly never even mentioned because, all are free to discuss at will. If the kids bring it up they are free to share their thoughts. Last year a Christian boy and a Muslim boy started some great class discussions.

We are pretty open and loving Towards All here in California.
(( especially in the classroom )).

Actually I think on all levels this gets blow out of proportion because, we live in what used to be considered the red neck part of San Diego County and I attend many different forms of meetings with all colors and religions and We All Get Along Just Fine.

Some are always just looking for a very, very small fly in a very, very large bowl of soup.

As a Christian I (we of this house and Church love everybody.)

Seriously doubt it.

My point is that not just Christianity should be protected. When religious freedom is talked about, all religions recognized should be counted!

Here is a list of recognized religions by our military.

Hi isilwen,

For the record, the updated guidelines do not mention 'christian' or 'christianity'. All of the reports and certifications and what not are labeled as 'religious' or 'religion'. The guidelines protect the practices of all faiths...so long as it is outside of any 'instructional' time.

I read a lot of the 'new' guidelines and it really isn't much different than the old guidelines. There is a change now, that in order to receive federal funding, there must now be some statement, and there aren't really any forms as such, but it just seems as some written claim that a local or state school administration not have any rules or practices that are not in line with what the guidelines mandate. One report I read said that it could just be a letter submitted with a request for federal funding. I'm not sure how effective it is to police this issue, if all it takes is that somebody writes down on a piece of paper, "We don't have any rules or requirements that go against the religious freedoms guidelines".

So, as long as a christian or muslim based school doesn't want to receive federal funding, they can still refuse practices of other religions on their school property. As far as I can tell, these guidelines apply only and specifically to 'public' schools.

As far as the reference made as to these new guidelines overturning previous guidelines, in reading the new guidelines it doesn't make any issue about this overturns that. It's just a document of guidelines. I'm not particularly familiar with the old guidelines as far as having read them through, so I can't report on what may have changed from then to now.

Sadly, as has been seen in so very many of President Trump's crowing of great success stories, when you actually sit down and look at the facts, it's often just a lot of noise. Remember how he had secured $500B in contracts with the middle east nations when he went over there on his first foray? Didn't happen. But, for those who aren't much interested in the details, he roils up a crowd with all of his fairly empty rhetoric.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

It amazes me just how easily he can do that. Don't these people in the rallies employ any skepticism or discretion? Maybe Hillary was right in her ill timed observation about them.
