I have been shown that children who practice self-indulgence previous to puberty, or the period of merging into manhood and womanhood, must pay the penalty of nature’s violated laws at that critical period. — An Appeal to Mothers

Many sink into an early grave, while others have sufficient force of constitution to pass this ordeal. If the practice is continued from the ages of fifteen and upward, nature will protest against the abuse she has suffered, and continues to suffer, and will make them pay the penalty for the transgression of her laws, especially from the ages of thirty to forty-five, by numerous pains in the system, and various diseases, such as affection of the liver and lungs, neuralgia, rheumatism, affection of the spine, diseased kidneys, and cancerous humors.Some of nature’s fine machinery gives way, leaving a heavier task for the remaining to perform, which disorders nature’s fine arrangement, and there is often a sudden breaking down of the constitution, and death is the result. — An Appeal to Mothers

Anyway, Ellen White preached another gospel that directly contradicts the new testament. So enough of her.

Did you know that all that kind of talk during that time led to the American custom of circumcision?

I read a bit on where she discouraged children from taking spicy foods and sleeping in the same bed. And I think she encouraged circumcision.

That's very interesting, I wasn't aware. It's quite unfortunate because circumcision is almost never medically needed.

It became the custom in the US later in the 19th century as a deterrent to masturbation among boys. It's recently been found to have health benefits so the practice continues.

I heard this as well. Also, I recently came across her statements about how "brain power" is needed to received messages from the Holy Spirit.

Oh she is a false prophet, but I think it has more to do with other doctrines of her's.

Same here. Although, I’ve seen some Adventist commit a lot of “biblical gymnastics” to get her off the hook on doctrines like the Trinity.

Dr Kellogg invented corn flakes and Dr Sylvester Graham invented his cracker; both intended to diminish the sex drive and curb masturbation.

If you ever want to get grossed out, do a google search on anti-masturbation devices registered with the US Patent Office in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Which further adds to the idea that her supposed visions were not from "God" but rather just the common attitude towards masturbation during her lifetime.

In the 19th century it was not known that girls did that. Prevailing thought until about 1900 was that human females had no sex drive or feelings. That was based on a text by Hippocrates published circa 400 bc.

But if anyone would have bothered to read the Song of Solomon in the Hebrew, there would have been no doubt. Shulamite masturbates in it (chapter 5) and is described as "undefiled."

Thanks Dave. I’ll research this some more, I already came across Song of Songs chapter 5 - Explore the Faith

However, although you haven’t stated it it should be noted that we sometimes take too much from wisdom literature and see acts without condemnation as being okay.

Her appeals to the medical consequences may or may not have validity to them.

Studies show, however, that there is potential psychological damage in masturbation, particularly if it’s linked to the viewing of inappropriate contentography.

In any case, masturbation is a sin. While I no doubt have a great many theological disagreements with White, she and I seem to basically agree on this issue.

Hebrew "wisdom" literature is very complex and cannot be readily rendered in English or any non-Semitic language. There are at least 4 completely different levels of meaning.

In the Hebrew scriptures, the first level of meaning is Peshat and deals with the plain meaning of the text. And it is ALWAYS correct as seen. In the SoS, the peshat is simply erotic poetry describing sex acts, primarily HER experience of it. So you can take it that what SoS describes sexually is ok.
