"And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. " -Matthew 16:18

The following video features the Catholic YouTube celebrity Fr. Mike Schmitz, as he explains the Pope in the context of the history of the Kingdom of Israel, and the Kingdom of God that Jesus discusses. Her gives a very brief overview of a lot of the Old Testament, largely focusing on authority, which is what the question of the Pope really comes down to. At the end, Fr. Mike says this is something worth praying about; please do so, before & after watching this video, or anything else about our vitally important faith. I'm not encouraging prayer as a way to try to win you to my side; I just think it's very important that we pray whenever we watch or read or listen to anything Bible -related.

Also, Catholic Answers is a great site to learn about the Biblical nature of Catholic teachings. This article is a question & answer style description of the Papacy (office & idea of the Pope) in Scripture: Where Does the Bible Say Anything about the Papacy?

May God continue to bless us all, and may we never lose sight of him in the midst of arguments & questionable theology!:crossrc::pray:

Christ is both the Visible and Invisible Head of the Church
Is this what you are referring to?

Ephesians 1:18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 according to the working of his great might 20 when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills iall in all.

Personally I don't have a problem with the apostle Peter's supremacy in matters related to faith and practice. For one thing, his epistles have less in them for us to do than Paul's so that's good.

However, once somebody acknowledges Peter's authority, they become responsible to know and to comply with everything he stood for. Failure to follow Peter's lead is all the same as failure to follow Christ's. It's a domino effect all the way to the top.

Matt 16:19 . . I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Luke 10:16 . .Whoever listens to you; listens to me. Whoever rejects you; rejects me. And whoever rejects me; rejects the one who sent me.

It's a terrible tragedy indeed for those Christians who all their lives defended Peter's supremacy only to end up in Hell because they not only didn't listen to him, but they didn't even bother to read his two epistles.

The Gospel of Matthew might--might--mean that Peter was made the universal head of the church, but it in no way makes 200 other men coming after him be the head of church, one after the other.

And IF Matthew 16:18-19, as claimed, does create a Papacy, the verse would have been cited by the bishops of Rome as justifying that claim from the first century onward. Yet the first use of it for this purpose doesn't occur until several centuries later.

2Pet 3:1-2 . .This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; through them by way of reminder I am trying to stir up your sincere disposition, to recall the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and savior through your apostles.

Note the possessive pronoun "your" when Peter speaks of apostles. In other words; the the original twelve apostles multiplied and spread out so as to perpetuate Jesus' hierarchical representation down here on the Earth.

So then, who are these "your apostles" about whom Peter speaks? We need to know because they stand in for Jesus; which is pretty serious because refusal to comply with their words is all the same as refusal to comply with the Lord and savior's commandment.

The Greek word for "apostle" is apostolos (ap-os'-tol-os) which basically refers to a delegate, i.e. an ambassador. The designation isn't limited to the original twelve; for example:

Phil 2:25 . .With regard to Epaphroditus, my brother and co-worker and fellow soldier, your messenger and minister in my need, I consider it necessary to send him to you.

The Greek word for "messenger" in that verse is apostolos (ap-os'-tol-os). In other words; "your messenger" is the same as "your apostle".

I suggest that apostles like Epaphroditus are what's commonly known as Bishops; men entrusted with the spiritual welfare of not just one local church, rather, a number of local churches in a specific territory, i.e. a diocese.

Well; I know of nothing in the Bible preventing Bishops from having a senior Bishop in charge of all the other Bishops; viz: Cardinals. And again, I know of nothing in the Bible preventing Cardinals from having a senior Cardinal in charge of all the other Cardinals, viz: a pontiff.

The Roman Catholic Church's hierarchal structure is neither unbiblical, unreasonable, nor unusual. Practically every country and every government operates the very same way. In point of fact, even the angels in Heaven are similarly organized. We know that's so because there exists a cadre of celestial beings called archangels; which is from the Greek word archaggelos (ar-khang'-el-os) which means a chief angel. Well if there are chief angels, then there must be a cadre of lesser angels subordinate to the archangels; and so on down the line, with the whole structure captained by Christ; the angels' pontiff. (1Pet 3:22)

Now the thing is: nobody has to buy into The Church's hierarchical structure if they don't want (CCC 1782) however, once they accept the structure, then Peter expects them to get behind it.

1Pet 5:5 . .You younger members, be subject to the presbyters.
